Turning weed pots / twig pots from spalted maple wood

Turning bowls is fun, but sometimes a simple little woodturning from a scrap of wood is just the right project. Here's a quick project that you can do yourself, regardless of the size of your lathe. Weed pots, or twig pots, can be made any shape or size or proportion, so any little chunk of wood will do. I had a cutoff from a spalted maple log that was about 4" thick and I wasn't sure what to do with it, but the spalting looked too nice to get rid of it, so it sat for a few weeks until I realized what to make. Total time to make these two pieces is probably about an hour, not counting time for the sanding sealer to dry. Having two finished projects in one hour is one of the things that makes woodturning so fun... immediate gratification.

I use an oil finish on most of my work, including spalted maple. It absorbs a lot of finish, so it can be good to use sanding sealer first.

My preferred sanding sealer is Minwax Professional because it's white and doesn't add a yellow tinge like many others.

Excellent video and tutorial. I will be making some of these soon. May I suggest, and I am no authority on video or you tube, but perhaps turn off the background sound and add music. I like that you are not talking over it, but music sounds nicer than a bowl gouge on wood.
