I have 50 3/4 x 3/4 x 4 in. whistles in a box next to my desk. I hand them out to the neighbor kids to drive their parents insane.

When making the mouth piece with the Jacobs chuck, why dont you bring in the live tail to hold it in ? Edit: Saw some other people already suggested it... sorry for spamming.

Nice, just a thought here, you could always bring your tailstock up with a live centre and a scrap of wood to stop your Jacobs chuck from spinning out?

Nice whistle. You might want to Use that tail stock (live centure) to hold that chuck in place.

Nice video! I I drilled and taped my jacobs chuck Morse taper to accept a 1/4” x 20 all thread rod. Draw bar is much safer in headstock!

Dean, why don't you drill & tap your Morse Taper drill shank to accept a draw-bar? It helps prevent it from loosening when Jacobs chucking things like your drum-sander. On another note, ..... Thanks for the enjoyable video. It's perfect with morning coffee ! ☝⚠ Wakodahatchee Chris

Dean my dad use to make wood whistles when I was a kid. Rule #1 never run with a whistle in your mouth. Don't ask me how I know lol. He use to use sweet gum or black gum saplings just as the sap rises in the spring because at that time only will the bark slip off the wood easily. He carve the Vee knotch then pushed the wood out of the bark then made the longer knotch in the wood just stopping short of the end, he then pushed it back together and when it all dried the bark never came off. great video!

I've made many similar whistles out of pine, walnut, maple, cedar, apple, ash and etc; however, every time I've tried to make one out of oak I can't get any sound out of it. My whistles have about a 3" deep hole (with a 45 degree angle 3/4" from the mouthpiece end) and they usually make a very good noise. For some reason the oak just isn't working for me. Any suggestions for having better luck with oak? Have you found the 30 degree angle to be superior? Thanks for the great video.
@DeansWoodworking
@DeansWoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
Red oak is an open grain wood and if you make an end grain bowl water will leak out about as fast as you pour it in. because of this the air escapes and it has to have a finish to stop the air flow for the whistle to work. different angles different sounds I suggest you play with it until you get a sound you like. Thanks for Watching!!!

@@DeansWoodworking Took your advice and sealed the inside of the whistle with a couple coats of thinned shellac and that did the trick... both whistles now look fantastic and sound fine. Thank you!!!

Thanks for Subscribing, and Thanks for Watching!! Most projects will have dimensions unless turned from a limb in that case the size of the limb determines the dimensions.
