Hey Dave.. got another method you can try that doesn’t require selecting & duplicating layers. Put your artwork on a layer above your text. Then choose the ‘clipping mask’ option on the artwork layer (you’ll see an arrow icon appear to the left). Now you can adjust the position of everything, change colors, blend modes etc and still maintain the transparency around the text. Might be a little easier.

Ah the age old clipping mask! I’ve always had an aversion to it, I’m not sure why. I actually made a video about it a long time ago! It does work well for this, but for some reason my brain doesn’t like it. I think because I had some projects with dozens of layers and things would get moved around and the clip would break!

I agree.. does seem a little confusing and backwards how the clipping mask works. Think it would be ideal in this situation though, especially if you’re doing the same text and want to swap between different artwork. Just sandwich as many artworks as you like between the mask and text layer and hide their visibility according to which you want to see.

This is really helpful, I haven't tried it yet but will as soon as I'm home. I like the fact that the text layer is still Editable. So if I make a mistake in spelling or just want to change the font style, I can. Then do the cutting and template over again.

I've gone over a two of your videos for this effect a zillion times, but still not getting it for some reason. I really like the way you demonstrate your tutorials too - good slow pace and a lovely soothing voice, which is keeping me calm despite hours of frustration. For some reason I'm just not getting the letters with the image, just the image? I'm going to try the clipping mask that soneone else has mentioned......😅

Does anyone know how to... I am drawing my own letters and I want to keep the edges my chosen color and fill the inside with a photo without it changing the outline. I can't figure out how to do it with clipping mask, alpha lock, etc. It always colors the outline sketch of letter.
