I was taught to come to a stop with the bike at a 45 degree angle towards the direction of the turn. This increases the visibility of the bike to motorists behind me and it decreases the turning radius so I could keep the wheels straight to gather momentum before turning the wheel. Great video.

I didn't realize the right turn gremlin bothered anyone but me. I have to be VERY careful as I am a 55-year old woman who is only 5'2" and 125 lbs riding a 2017 Softail Deluxe. I almost dumped my bike in a slow turn this past weekend because I was taking off 1) handlebars set straightforward, and 2) UPHILL and trying to prevent back-roll - doing this in a ton of traffic with cars behind me. Needless to say, my confidence took a bad beat-down. I'm committed now to spending nice days this winter in parking lots performing skill-building exercises.

Elizabeth I want to be like you when I grow up! I'm learning to ride and I'm about your height, I'm in the Netherlands - over here we need to take lessons and master all these special manoeuvres before getting the licence. My riding lessons are on a lowered Honda CB 500, quite easy to handle. I think eventually the choice for me will have to be a low bike so I'm thinking about buying a cruiser. The fact that the longer wheelbase makes these bikes more difficult to handle is really intimidating to me. How are you getting along with the tight turns and the practicing? Is it really so much more difficult to make tight turns than on a "shorter" bike?

Way to go Elizabeth! Keep at it. The confidence beat down doesnt just happen to you. Every once in a while I'll do something stupid or sloppy and beat myself up over it for weeks. I also like to take a MSF course every 2 or 3 years for a good refresher.

Elizabeth Crosby you certainly are not alone. I'm 60, female, 5'5" , 140 and a new rider. I took the MSF course last fall and bought a 250 Rebel. About a month ago traded the Rebel for a '17 Kawasaki Vulcan S 650. It's a great bike, but I'm having to learn a lot of things over again. This is definitely one of them, and yes, I thought it was just me. Thanks for sharing!

Only 3 or 4 months each summer are suitable for riding where I am (northern 🇨🇦) There have been a few setbacks ,but I look at them as learning opportunities. My biggest injury is my ego when I screw up. Keep your chin up eh!

Man I had my first right turn and I went wide, though I feel that panic feeling, I beat it down and loot straight ahead. If I had looked as I was turning into the turn instead of peeking at the car in that left lane as you stated in the video, I would not have gone wide. I have gotten much better but it is practice, practice and more practice.

Nice, concise and to the point. I am back on bikes again after a 15 year hiatus. I was an exceptionally confident rider, everything came so naturally to me. However, after being out of the saddle for a while, I found myself really nervous when doing right hand turns. When I took my fast track week long course, my instructor had us riding around mini roundabouts, every day for at least an hour. Being over here in the UK that gave me lots of practice with handling a bigger sized motorbike slowly, whilst turning right. I took my bike out this morning at 5am, first time I have ridden it since I bought it a month ago - and I made sure I mostly practiced turning right. Has given me so much confidence being able to take my time on the road, with no other traffic about.

Best advice I ever got at the MSF class. Look where you want to go. At first it sounded silly, but then I actively tried not doing it in a parking lot. Didn't work out too well. LoL. Such simple advice is invaluable.👍🏾

Take a look at the Super Bike racers going into a turn.. watch their heads snap to the direction of the turn.. Every single one of them will snap to the direction of the turn at the exact same place and STAY there through the turn... Watch, see, and learn. IF they are doing it?????? Why not you.

David Pritchett that's my point.😕. I do it all the time. I was in a parking lot seeing the effect of NOT looking into a turn. There's no way I'd ever not look into a turn on my bike.

I took my basic rider's course and got my endorsement about a year ago, but didn't get my own bike until recently. The only experience I have riding is when I took the class so needless to say I'm a total rookie. The biggest fear I had while taking the class was the turns, and that still applies with my own bike. I tried to take the bike out a couple of weeks ago, but I was too scared to make the turn out of the driveway so I only got to go back and fourth in the driveway, lol! So watching this video helped me out to know what to do to turn the bike effectively. Thank you for posting this, and I will be taking my bike out soon to practice more and overcome my fear so I can finally get comfortable, confident, and enjoy riding my bike! 👍🏽

I would recommend new riders be very careful with this technique as if you lose momentum through poor clutch control or if you grab the front brake you're likely to drop the bike. If you don't have to make a sharp turn from a standstill I'd suggest novices get some momentum in a straight line before turning and, as always, keep your hand off the front brake when turning. Thanks for the videos Kevin.
@MCrider
@MCrider 7 жыл бұрын
Good point! Front brake, turned handlebars and slow speeds do not mix. It's the quickest way to drop a bike. But, this is a skill all riders need to develop. Just make sure you have the technique down before you need it on the road.
@markkulyas2418
@markkulyas2418 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I would practice this first in a parking lot, not on the road, I have a adventure bike and its top heavy and this is exactly how I dropped my bike at an intersection, had the front wheel turned started to move, stalled the engine and then must of panicked and grab the front brake and down she went, it happened so fast. So for now on, I keep my wheels straight until I get momentum and then turn, I will continue this method until I become proficient turning from a stop in a parking lot.

Great advice. A must do as far as a needed skill. Short video but important. Practice full lock turn from stop. One day a truck decides to back up from a stop sign. Went full lock turned the bike just in time to avoid getting the bike hit. MC riders are a "must" watch series in my favorites folder.

David Pritchett Very true David. Well said. My bike would have been crushed. I was contemplating jumping off the bike if I screwed up my turn. I did a lot of practicing in the parking from the first day of getting my bike license. I find a full lock turn from stop freaky to do but figured someday it may be useful. God videos. You should also do a video on making a right turn from a stop onto a street that has a dip for water drainage. If you don't goose the throttle a little, you stand a chance of losing your forward momentum in the dip and dropping the bike. You should also cross the dip at an angle. It's just easier.

Shocked this has to be taught as it came naturally to me. Which reminds me.., back in ‘85, I let my buddy try my new Honda Intercepter. He’d only been on a bike s few times in his young life. Evidently.., your lesson would have come in useful as he tried to turn and totally wrecked my new 4 day old Honda. I was pissed! Didn’t get it back from repair for 4 months. Missed my first summer. So..., your lessons are useful.

I have a Concours and it is very top heavy at low speed so it's best to keep straight up as possible at low speed, if you let it lean more than just a little it gets heavy in a hurry. I also found it much easier to make a low speed u-turn by staying off the front brake and using a combination of throttle and the back brake to control my balance, this allows me to make a tighter more controlled u-turn. I'm old and short and I haven't dropped it yet. I like your videos keep up the good work.

I ride a scooter so turns are easier in that I the rear break is accessible to me on the right side lean, right foot down, via my left hand where a motorcycles clutch would be. Easy access to that rear break lessens the temptation to pull on that front break while turning, which drops the bike. I've made the pull the front break from a stop mistake on a motorcycle and scooter but the scooter is more forgiving. The motorcycle felt like it wanted to nose dive, though I kept it up. What spooked me most new is making that left turn, head and eyes left, but not wanting to die as someone barrels down on your from the right. At about 2,000 miles I got better. I'm a new rider. One full year on the bike. But I will say I practiced for hours in a parking on drills just like this and honestly think it's the smartest thing to do. Thanks for these tips. I'm watching them and learning and reminding myself to keep practicing.

Hi Kevin. Thank you for your videos, the are very helpful. I didn’t read all the comments, so forgive me if you answered this already. A number of people wrote about dropping their bike during a slow speed turn. This happened to me, as well, a week ago, trying to maneuver out of my parking garage. I have never dropped a motorcycle before, so was quite shaken up. Luckily, the bike and me suffered little damage. I think what happened was I turned the bars too much and gave it throttle, then grabbed the front brake. I was hoping you could address this potential hazard of slow speed turns. Thank you.

You do forget that the handlebars can be turned. I lowsided on a T junction because I leaned and also set off a little too hot. One damaged foot peg/brake bracket and some seriously damaged pride later, I have learned my lesson.

The greatest thing about MCriders' videos is that he tells you what he is doing, and Why.. Motorman, on the other hand is more show than tell. Folks will follow instructions a lot quicker if they know WHY they are doing it. I think my back button on the vids is worn out, looking at everything he does many times.. I hope yours is too.

I can attest to the dangers of not turning properly. My first ever motorcycle accident was a low side after turning from a stop sign. Very amateur mistake I know. Didn't look through the turn, went wide, hit loose grave / lost traction, probably target fixated when that happened, then went down near the curb and brush (at least not into the oncoming traffic lane!!). Thankfully it was a low speed and the cars around me stopped. Not a scratch on me (ATGATT!!!) afterwards though. You definitely learn a lot from your first motorcycle accident, even if it's a minor one.

2:23 ... wow... I need a reverse gear. Joke aside. Very good advice. In traffic, I don't run dangerously wide myself at all, but I'd sure like to acquire some "parking lot skills". I think maneuvering safely at such low speeds is an art of its own.
