My water heater was leaking so bad, it was filling buckets every 10 minutes. I am so grateful for the insight, and shut the breaker, still leaked. shut the water source, still leaked. So I grabbed the hose, attached it to the bottom drain and opened it up and ran the hose out the garage door, and allowed it to drain. Thank goodness for videos otherwise my garage and all in to would be wrecked!! I am a woman on her own and this was great info thanks...😁

6 yrs later after you posted this and you saved a family and 4 dogs. Thank you so much. Was walking by the water heater closet and saw water and I opened the door to a misting spray from the outlet valve on top. Immediately looked for ways to turn it off and your video may have saved out lives. It that had blown up half my home would be gone and so would at least two of my four dogs. I believe the leak was only a day old. Calling landlord in the morning

Thank you! It took me a few hours to realize there are 2 shut off valves on mine, one was to the house, the other from the source. So water poured out for a few hours. I put the hose on and it was gushing so bad I realized the water was still on. I finally found the hidden valve. Lucky the water heater closet is outside. Unlucky it broke on NYE night and no plumbers would call me back. I hope my bill isnt too bad. Thanks again!

Thank you! Water was gushing out of that hole that you attached the pipe to like I had opened a fire hydrant. Still don't know why. Of course, it's the holiday and my landlord isn't answering calls. Have a gas water heater in my old home built in the 70s. Instead of the water main being where it us in every other house we had to punch a hole through the drywall to get to it, but otherwise this was all spot-on solutions.

OUTSTANDING video!!! I have a 5.5 yr old gas water heater-A O Smith. My overflow pipe is leaking. Plumber says probably T&P valve needs replacing. Told me it’s ok to leave as is till he can come to replace it in 3 days. Says it will be ok because there’s a drain pipe connected into the pan below that runs down into the floor. But I’m left wondering-what if pressure is continuing to build up inside the tank? Can’t it explode if it gets too high? So I’m nervous about letting it stay as is for 3 days while waiting on the plumber! Came here to learn how to shut the whole thing down. As a 62 yr old female with no plumbing experience, you’ve made it simple for me. Thank you!! I’m off to go do it now!! Hope I live to tell the story. P.S. We have hard well water. With the heater being over 5 yrs old, should we go ahead and replace it, rather than just replace the valve?

There is need to worry! That valve will open in spurts if the pressure gets too high, about 150psi, or if the temperature gets too high, 210f. It shouldn't be necessary to replace the heater quite yet.

When you installed the water heater you might want to consider replacing the plastic valve with a full-bore 3/4" ball valve so that you can easily flush 1x a year. There are also electric valves available that could be connected to your home-brew smoke alarm/water alarm to shut off supply water while you are out too.

If it's on a pipe, it should be repairable. You should replace the part and not use any glue or adhesive to repair it.

That's strips of wood. I used pine 3/4" thick and 1" high. I painted them first then siliconed the strips of wood to the floor to create a water tight tray.

In most cases it's because it has rusted a hole through the side of the tank. You can also have one of the fittings wear out or one of the valves start to leak.

When they start to leak they won't leak a lot of water. It can be a pin hole but to answer your question yes you do need to have it looked at and fixed.

Mine has a blue plastic thing for lack of a better word and it was straight which on the blue thing means open so I turned it sideways and switched it to closed. Is that alright? Also when yoy turned the handle off it was turned to the right? Thanks for being straight to the point.

A lot of people don't know how to work the gas valve on the water heater so the very first thing to do is to turn off the gas valve with yellow handle/knob, followed by shutting off the water supply to the heater.
