It’s silly but I almost feel bitterness and resentment towards TikTok for creating this standard of short form content. I should be able to have the willpower not to doomscroll but it is just so psychologically addictive somehow, it feels sinister. the damn loops are what kill me. Short form content is fine when I decide to opt into it. Otherwise you get baited into clicking on one and often I'll catch myself just rewatching the same damn video loop a couple times, almost hypnotized. The amount of time literally wasted away on shit like that is slowly killing us. I don't mind them making it if they want but allow us to opt out of it. I don't know if you've seen the JRE clip titled "how casinos keep you {addicted? Hooked?}" But the guest of the show said there are 3 main criteria for the "psychological gambling loop": 1) Theres a reward possibility 2) Its easily repeatable 3) The reward is randomized So for instance, for a solt machine: 1) obviously the chace for money 2) all you do is pull a lever 3)"I may have lost on this spin...BUT THE NEXT..." And, though, this wasnt talked about in the clip. Its clear to me the "short" formula meets these requirements (when paired with an AI.) 1) there's a reward: for shorts its an emoitional reward. You can call it dopamine if you'd like. But its more... There's always the chance to laugh, cry, get angry, be in awe, inspired, motivated, scared, get your adrenaline spiked, whatever. Point is, whatever you watch, youre gonna going get some emotional reward. In a matter of minutes you can experience more (intense) emotion IN SHORT SPURTS than you would a full day without. 2)its easily repeatable: One thing -- SHORTS 3) the reward is randomized: You never know which emotion you're gonna get. But whatever it is, its going to feel good (even angry or sad feels good without the consequences). But you just don't know when. I mean, its not like you watch every short. Hence: doom scrolling. Eventually the AI/Algorithm will react to you and your actions. Finding the "rhythm of content" that you are engaging with the most. Honeing on the loop that will keep your watch time up. At least, that's my opinion. Shorts is just gambling with your emotions. No wonder its so addictive. Everyone is gambling and no one knows it. I mean its not like its an easy thing to connect without some context. We all think of gambling with currency for the most part. But with shorts.... I think your gambling with you emotions.

Something that is a huge benefit to disabling this other than preventing addictive scrolling is that it will also GREATLY improve the recommended videos on the home page. I have no idea why, but ever since KZbin added shorts, the recommended tab is a nightmare. I exclusively watch some of the most predictable vanilla content (video essays, smosh, rdpr content, commentary channels, etc), but once I started watching shorts it destroyed my recommended feed and made the app unusable. I started getting recommended extremist political content, sexual spam, Andrew Tate clips, videos made by children that should not be anywhere within reach of adults, 4 hour livestreams with 30 views and a nonsensical title, 4 second clips, nothing but complete garbage over and over. It didn’t matter how many times I marked either a short or a video as “not interested” or “don’t recommend channel”, I would get recommended some of the most bizarre shit I’ve ever seen. As soon as I removed shorts, without even tapping a single video my recommended feed looked normal again.

Hey so, this is a good option but I found a literal cheat in the system to not deal with shorts, even if you click the short button below- all you have to do is literally turn off your save history and boom, it literally cant show you any it’s amazing, downside is you can’t see recommendations on the for you page at all and the videos you watch won’t save, but you can see the videos of who you’re subscribed to and save videos by putting them in playlists, I'm gonna copy and paste this to let everyone know-

Tried this on iPhone in June 2024 and it still works! They’ve changed how shorts appear in the feed so it’s a little different but I still got them to disappear completely from my feed! Thank you so so much for this

I know there's still the shorts tab at the bottom, but a hack I use is to just dislike every single short no matter what. Do this for a few hours and the algorithm will be so fucked up that you're feed just won't be intersting anymore.
