Im 57 and havent played in 25 years until about 2 months ago (only played about 50 times total more or less). Ive had 4 lessons before today and had a terrible Out-in swing. I tried all your drills and couldnt fix....sometimes 10-15*. Today we had a break through. My instructor told me the ONE focus for today was the shoulder turn..I was only going back about 60* instead of 90 or close. WOW! I hit everything IN to OUT and even hooked some.. It's been said you cant get good golf directly from a slice...you need the pull/hook, from the slice, then straight. I left the lesson and went to the simulator. Almost every shot I took....the first 5-6 in a row for sure...was IN to OUT!. Yeah, not the straightest, but it was great...The first 5 shots was a 15-yd average over my normal distance with 7 and one was even 25 years farther. SHOULDER TURN!!

Great explanation of what is going on with the shoulders and hips in the swing. One question, doesn't the angle need to change somewhat between the different length clubs? I've got that stuck in my head for some reason...THANKS

At times I top the ball, a local pro said I was pulling my left shoulder up to early. I then started concentrating on my shoulder turn, problem solved. Great video, keep them coming 😀

@@USGOLFTVshow keeping my left shoulder low through the turn. I can see it while starting the downswing. For me, this is a much better swing thought than "keep your head down".

Todd, As senior golfers, 70 and above, we find it difficult to tilt our shoulders like you show in this video. We have to turn our shoulders much flatter in many cases. What should we be focusing on to properly use our shoulders from this flatter position? SoonerSlim

Good question, make sure your trail leg is releasing slightly. This will add some tilting to the hips and therefore some tilt to the shoulders. Take a look at the great Sam Snead for a classic example 👍

Great video. I have been trying to do this with my irons and it is working great. Should the same angle and rotation that you used in the video for a 6 iron also be used for a 4 rescue club and the driver. I have tried hitting both the rescue and driver using the same angle and rotation you show in your video. My contact seems better. However, I am pushing the ball to the right.

Jim Haggerty Practice great question, the shoulders will turn at a slightly more shallow angle with a hybrid, the shorter the club the steeper the angle, the longer the club the more shallow...hope that helps 👍

Very nice! I’m going to implement this. I have the dreaded “carnival pirate ship move” and this will help me. I turn too much around and not down and up with the shoulders. Now, should I be forcing my trail shoulder through the ball more? They tend to go down but hang back. Thanks!!!

If I limit my hip turn I feel like I have much less to go wrong with my swing like the timing and sequencing. But clearly I do not have the flexibility to make a 90 degree shoulder turn. In a dilemma on what to give up and what to do.

Being older and stiffer, I do notice I do not rotate my hips much at all and when I turn my shoulders, I have a tendency to get out of my posture and stand up just a bit and it cause me to top the ball or hit it thin. If I concentrate on staying down, I will sometimes chunk the shot or hit it fat, probably overcompensating. How can I make a hip and shoulder turn without swaying and getting out of my posture ?

V good question, the key is to turn into and around the trail hip, moving into not over is the key. We would also suggest letting your trial knee release a little(not flexed), this will allow your hips to turn more naturally which will also allow for more shoulder turn...make sense?
