Todd, I’ve been recuperating from spine surgery for the last three months. During that time my golf was limited to watching your videos. Yesterday I went out to play for the first time. I just hit wedges, irons and hybrids. I was so pleased with how I was hitting the ball. Better than ever actually and it was due to watching your instructional videos, thanks for you help, Mike from Tucson, Az

This is my first time to contact you, I have been watching your feed for a couple of years. You have given me some good help. My big thing is getting the distance I would like when I am playing. Maybe my age has a little to do with it since I am 89 years old. I love the game and will play as long as my body will let me. My handy cap last year was 24 and I play from the white tees.

Plan on hitting the driving range in March 6 months after total reverse shoulder replacement. I've chipped a little around the house. I know my swing will be a little limited. Stepped down to a senior shaft and hope for the best. Just want to be pain free. Thanks again.

Let me explain , Im a seniior golfer coming up 72 now and I have distance increase on the pitching wedge 9 iron and 8 iron but when it comes to the 7,6 and 5 irons they all give me the same distance with no improvement so you can understand why the 5& 6 irons generally stay in the bag , can you help please, Regards Richie

Excellent video. The people I teach ( all ages ) are usually beginner golfers, most jerk their head up well before the clubhead reaches the ball resulting in either a poorly struck ball or a whiff. What I tell them is to keep their head as still as possible, also relaxed and without feeling restricted, at least until they make contact with the ball. Most get it within a few swings, but some do not.

@@USGOLFTVshow I have also read your article from US Golf TV Short version. I remember last year I had many thin shots on the grass. Then, I put the ball slightly back and no thin shots. Really true. I also changed to maintain more knee flex. I think this helped me also, but I cannot be sure. As far as I understand you do not prefer maintaining trailing knee flexibility but I guess somehow it has helped me. Actually I prefer also having less knee flexibility and more leg extension so that I can turn more.

In my erratic golf history, I've always fallen back on the model of right foot square to the target line and trail leg angle maintained in order to promote a coil. I have found that flaring the trail foot and staying loose is better on my back and works well for me at 74. Also, using your 60/40 weight setting. How do you feel about the concept of presetting weight to the trail side and firing the right side from that position. Great lesson, as always. Thanks for the much appreciated help.

Should have mentioned David Duval and Annika S. as an example of head not staying down. Should have mentioned when your let your left arm soft. Make sure you still keep width/daylight in your backswing. Let your right hip get higher on back swing. Fyi, John Jacobs taught swing arms 30 yrs ago.

Todd, 1. In this video, you are against keeping your head down, and still. Are you advocating that with putting as well? I have always been under the impression that you should. 2. What is your opinion on starting the backswing with a slight forward press of the club or the knee, or both?
@USGOLFTVshow
@USGOLFTVshow 2 жыл бұрын
Good questions, we like a "quite" head in the putting motion, not still but calm. Sometimes when we try to be too still we create tension which is killer for touch and feel. A little forward press in the golf swing is ok, however we prefer a little weight shift to kick start the swing.

Todd, When I was 55 yrs old I could drive the ball 260 yds. I am 6’2” and carried a 9 handicap. I am now 77 yrs old and cannot reach most of the par 4’s in 2 . My drives are now between 180 and 200 yds! And my handicap is 15. What should I spend my practice time on to better my scores?

James, good question. Spend time on your hybrids, chipping and lag putting. These are the areas of your game that will show the most change to your scores.

Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, David Duval looked like he would lift his head and look at the target just before impact with the ball. Was I just imagining that, or did others see that? To me it defied the “keep your head down”.

I've seen this "Keep your head down" is bad advice before. This demonstration is not what that means. If you look at professional golfers at the moment of impact, that is what is meant by keeping your head down, that is, focusing on the ball through impact. If you start "Looking at the ceiling" at impact, good luck. The problem is, it isn't just the head that you raise, but your shoulders as well. Everything about this video is about extremes. Locking your head, locking your left arm, locking your right leg (this one I've never heard before). Sure, you can't hit a golf ball like that. But at the moment of impact, your left arm is straight, your focus is on the ball. Why? for a consistent arc necessary for good ball striking. An exercise about head movement. Bend forward and place your head against a wall. Now, rotate your shoulders as far as you can as you would in a backswing. Now, look at this demonstration. The problem is not keeping the head down, the problem here is there is no shoulder/hip rotation. By the way, if you want to see "keep your left arm straight" extreme watch Bryson Dechambeau. (Don't try to copy it).

Good comment R G. Golfers have to be really careful ( I’m talking mid to high handicappers, and especially those just learning) not to over analyze and try and keep 10 steps / sequences in their swing and in executing shots. Keep it basic and simple, and the rest should come naturally. Oh and guys my age (50+),.... don’t watch slo mos of Rory and those lads and try to emulate their swings. My two cents.
