I've been active in lawn forums for 20 years. In the first year I learned that everything I thought I knew about lawns was wrong. That was humbling, but I've been learning all this time. I must say I learned something from your video I would not have expected. Most people don't use preemergent. Of those that do, the ones who do it "right", use it in February and again in September. But you use it more often. I don't see any reason not to use it repeatedly, year round. Good for you, and congratulations on the progress you've made. You did not mention if you live in the windy part of West Texas, but I didn't see any wind, so I'm guessing you don't have a wind farm nearby. WATERING is THE most important part of lawn care. Deep and infrequent is the name of the game. Deep means 1 inch all at one time. For my oscillating sprinklers, my hoses, my water pressure, it takes a full 8 hours to apply 1 inch of water. My neighbor's high flow in-ground sprinklers put out 1 inch in 20 minutes. Yours will be somewhere between these numbers. This advice applies in Phoenix and in Vermont, so just about wherever you live, shoot for a full inch if you don't have an inch of rain in the past week. Infrequently means ONCE per week in the dead heat of summer. If your summer temps are in the 100s, then water every 5 days instead of 7. If it climbs to 110, water every 3-4 days, but never water every day. Even bermuda can look bad if watered too frequently. When the temps fall into the 80s, then water once every 2 weeks. Mowing. Mowing is second most important. Bermuda should be mulch mowed low every time you mow. If you mow it low enough, it will take on a horizontal growth habit. If you let it get taller than 3 inches, the bermuda will shade itself out and begin to thin. When that happens, then the weed seeds get enough sunlight to sprout. I've seen excellent bermuda mowed at 3/16s inch. However, now you're getting into a higher hassle factor with the lawn. In order to keep it mowed at such a low height, you'd have to mow every other day. Only certain people want that. Pick a height in the 1 inch area. Fertilizer. This is the least important of factors, because most people fertilize at least once in awhile. It appears you don't. With bermuda it is more important to fertilize because it is a nitrogen hog. You could use a high nitrogen fertilizer on it every month, and it would be very happy. But clearly you don't have to - just look at your lawn. However, I believe if you had used it a time or two in the back you would have it completely filled in. Which one? It doesn't matter that much as long as the N number is way higher than the rest. 42-0-0 is fine and easy to find in West Texas. Having said that, I never use chemical fertilizers. Never since 2002. I use only organic fertilizer in the form of either corn gluten meal or alfalfa pellets (rabbit chow). The application rate is 15 to 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Get it in 50-pound bags at the feed store. If you only use it once per year your soil will become more healthy. And no, it doesn't attract rabbits, deer, etc., but it might attract birds. They can't eat enough to make a difference. If you water it they don't get as much. At 5:43 in the vid, see those yellow spots on the left...do you have a dog? Those are classic dog pee spots. Get rid of them by dropping a heaping handful of table sugar on each spot and moisten it (don't wash it away). In 3 weeks the spots should be much greener and taller than the surrounding grass. Using organic fertilizer will help prevent them in the future. The sugar is not a direct fertilizer, but it feeds the bacteria in the soil responsible for processing the dog urine. When the microbes are well fed they do a better job and convert the urine into plant food in a safe way. On sprinkler selection: I've been at this since the 1960s, so I've tried all the sprinklers, twice or three times. I keep coming back to the oscillator type and in particular the turbo type. The mechanical linkage type of oscillator might be broken in the original box, but the turbo with all the internal gears can last a couple years if you don't ever try to force the roller. They're about $20 or so, so suck it up. If you were in a windy area, the oscillators don't work as well.

@@Dizzinator2114 This isn't the world's best forum for exchanging specific information, but what's your question about St Augustine? And sorry I missed this a year ago. Generally the differences for St Augustine from bermuda are mowing height should be the highest setting for St Aug, and you don't need to fertilize it every month. Watering is the same.

I grew up on a farm and we needed hay. Watching for weeds and getting rid of them is keeping live stock from getting sick. If selling, you get more per bale. Now, forced by many lumbar issues and Dr's trying everything from A to Z, has left me on a cane. We have tall fescue and some blue grass. My youngest son (Mid 30's) would not take my Scott's rotary spreader for pre-emergent that, like you said, last 3 months. Home improvement has a lot of inert fillers, but I buy at "Grass Pad" store. Grubs had theirs but get fatter on home improvement store products, I.E. Grub Food. I worked on vehicles over 4 decades and building new type tines on tiller. Physical limits force me to think outside the box. The soil, mostly clay, is amended with garden soil, infused with tree leaves & yard clipping tilled under for winter & rains. I am so sad as year two, no garden. Yard full of weeds yes lots of advice like kill it, de- thatch it heavy. Winter / cold kill weeds, so coming up good timing. I have to find money. With 170 feet square is in 5 parts with 1 area has 30% grade. I wish I could find used rider as I can weld & fabricate what it needs. Question; Did you pull all those weeds with a small tool and hands? DK, Omaha.

What type of grass is in your area? Mine is Bermuda and when it’s dormant it’s just brown. But as the temp starts to warm up small green blades of grass start to pop up. If you have some areas of grass it should start to spread and cover the bare areas in time. You could also make it buy some grass plugs.

Yes, the spray does kill everything, but what was happening was the weeds were over powering the grass. Once I killed everything at the beginning of spring, it gave the Bermuda a chance to come up and grow without having to fight all the weeds. Now that the Bermuda is so strong, I control the weeds with like weed and feed product or just spot spray for weeds.

I live in Ontario Canada and the grass in my backyard is covered with weeds. I tried looking for preemergent options but they're banned in Canada. Any suggestions on what preemergent you would recommend? I plan on doing the following (would love any tip/suggestions): 1. Use roundup to kill existing grass/weed 2. Once killed, remove any dead weeds 3. Mow the lawn to bring the grass/weed to an acceptable height to start the overseeding process 4. Aerate the ground 5. Overseed the ground and water appropriately 6. Apply preemergent (trying to find recommendations here) 7. Continue watering/mowing the lawn and apply preemergent quarterly

Sounds like you have a great plan in place. I’m not sure on the pre-emergent because of your restrictions.

Honestly any counter herbicides should be okay. As stated in the video, round-up (which is readily available in most homeware/ gardening stores) works as well as long as you don't mind using glyphosate. However, there might be local by-laws in place forbidding you from using glyphosate or other herbicides, so I would recommend checking your local restrictions before making any purchases.

Great video, but could you explain a little bit more about what you did after spraying?
@LifeLessOrdinary10 ай бұрын
Honestly I don’t do anything after spraying other than Pre emergent a few times a year. For me and it might be different for others, but the grass exploded once the weeds were all killed off. The wind blows like crazy here in this part of Texas so in the winter I still get some winter weeds. So I just hit them again as needed in late February or early march. 👍🏼

Wow, I am so glad I finally found a yard that actually looks just like ours at home. The weed infestation has just grown throughout the years until our entire lawn basically got taken over by weeds. My question is, you did not have to add any new seed to start over?? Just pre emergent and patience?????
@LifeLessOrdinary2 жыл бұрын
In my case no I never added any new seed. By killing everything at once, the natural Bermuda grass came in. Right now is the time to do it. 👍

@@LifeLessOrdinary That's interesting. I live in Canada, and I spray the lawn really rough, then lace the grass seed. Lol. Then in the fall I put fertilizer which kills the weeds and lace grass seed again. Lol. I'm so surprised that you don't seed, and use fertilizer. Amazing. Thanks! Have you ever tried clover? It mixes in grass and keeps it airy. So is good for moisture too?

Anybody doing this I would not recommend, ‘round up’ can last up to 5 years into the ground, the best way to combat this is to hand weed any perennials following on with Hoeing as many annuals then using a selective weed killer which will remove any broad leaf weeds allowing new turf to thrive

Helppppp me!!!! 😭😭😭 I've lived in this house for the past 4 years I live in Utah I have children and my yard is infested with weeds and my stickers have sticker babies it's so annoying I'm just tired but I don't know the first step because in my mind I thought I needed to like like you some sort of rake machine to lift the soil and then plant some seeds or something. If you can maybe send me a message or comment please. Thank you
@LifeLessOrdinaryАй бұрын
Lifting the soil is a ton of work and can be expensive. I’m not familiar with what type of grass you have in Utah. But I can imagine if you did the same process I did you might end up with similar results. You need a chemical that kills everything green in the late winter early spring. Once I did that everything that came up in April was fresh grass. Once the grass started coming in strong, then used weed and feed to feed the grass and knock out new weeds trying to come up.

Hello I really enjoyed your video! I’m hoping to get rid of my weeds as well. I had a question. On the weed killer you used, you said you waited until February. It is February now but I have very few active weeds. Is it better to spray now that weeds are almost non existent or wait? Also, you said this weed spray kills everything. Will it still kill everything if I’m not ready to plant grass yet? I have a goat head problem in my back yard that I want to get rid of. However I’m not sure if I have the budget to plant grass and install a sprinkler system yet. But I would still like to get rid of the weeds. Lastly, after spraying the weed killer did you simply pull the weeds out? And till the ground or just let the weeds dry up on their own and shovel them out?
@LifeLessOrdinary Жыл бұрын
If you don’t have any weeds right now there’s no need to spray it. I spray in February when I have a winter weed problem, because they end up choking out my new Bermuda grass trying to come in. But you can use pre-emergent now for the spring weeds that will come up. The pre-emergent will help to kill off any young weed seeds that are about to sprout.
