We used fescue seed on our lawn in Tennessee. There was nothing there before we put the seed down. We aerated and put the seed down and covered it with straw. Five years later our lawn looks great. That grass is tough as nails. We over seeded two years later and aerate every year.

Just caught your thumbnail and had to check this out. I work for my local water dept and we are constantly digging in customers yards. We found this seed at our local farm store a few years ago and the stuff for us is just amazing! The stuff will grow with no care it seems and 9 out of 10 times, our patch looks better than the rest of the yard. We literally seed it, throw some straw down and leave. We've had several calls wanting to know what we use! We are in central Illinois so I don't know if that makes a difference or not but the stuff has been great for us!

I am a disabled combat vet and pushing 40. After I could no longer mow my entire property within a weekend due to my injuries, I seeded the 2 acres behind the house with clover. It has been great for us. Looks good in my opinion, and the chickens get to feast non stop. I still have a normal lawn in front of the house, but the clover in the back has been life changing for me in being able to have more time with my family.

I've been on a multi-year quest to level my yard (20 yards of topsoil), fill in the bare spots, and get a consistent type of grass. It never once occurred to me that the lighter shade of green of the fescue blend I'm using was something others didn't find appealing. Then again I don't like bourbon or sushi either so I guess I'm just oblivious to most things.

Nah your not oblivious your just smart. These grass snobs on here that thinks K31 is a “trash seed” are just stupid and they probably live in a subdivision with about 100sf of yard. K31 mixed with annual rye (annual rye is very quick growing giving a good base for the fescue) and you’re good.

The grass actually looks better than I thought it would, but I can’t say I’m a fan of that color. I love tall fescue and the modern cultivars are so much better with color, disease resistance, drought resistance, texture, etc… GCI laterally spreading tall fescue is ~$150 shipped for 45 pounds. To me, that extra price is worth it.

Not “cheap” here in NC. Cost as much as blue tag seed. It’s an extremely durable grass and with proper fert applications it’s plenty green.
@JCLawn512 ай бұрын
If you use any iron supplement it will darken that grass. I've used it in areas where grass is hard to grow and color is highly dependent on what's in the soil. That's why you got light and dark areas. Lots of trees around and no grass, that's usually a sign of depleted nutrients in the soil and your pH might be wacked. The only time I have lime green k31 was planting where pine trees had been. A perfect lime green color where the needles were and then outside of that circle it was dark green.

It will darken up as it matures. You can also spread some ironite to darken it up. K31 is pretty low maintenance as well. Great for large properties for cost and maintenance reasons alone. I have 2 acres of lawn to maintain and generally buy 1000 lbs of K31 to overseed every year. If I was buying turf type that would get expensive quickly.

comb-shaft (the long finned thing) seeder/fertilizer applicators are literally designed to be able to do wet seed I always found it funny when people complained about how bad the grass seed looked in a location that grass wasn't growing but weeds would grow. That means you've screwed up the soil. If grass already isn't growing but the weeds love it it means you need a "bag of" fixing the damned soil. I had one customer complain about a patch and he kept buying sod and just tossing it on - so a week after he went back north I spent the 3 hours it takes to properly implant StAugustinegrass blocks and used 6 8" by 4" deep blocks from my yard. My yard is a late 1970's original varietal that likes to do things like attack traffic, cover bushes, open the back door and grow inside my air conditioner. Its slowly taking over his yard year-on-year and impossible to kill through mistreatment. I would say you should have used a cultivation hoe or a loop hoe and scraped up the top 4 inches of soil then just rolled it flat with the tractor and let the weeds germinate and kill them before seeding. Plausibly even added a "french pocket" (field drain with no outlet that goes over into tree roots) I _have_ planted old 31 a couple times but never ever in broadcast, I always used it as a slot-fill beside brickwork or in a blended-plug (grind a hole, mix the seeds in, put it back in the hole and stomp) or in rows like no-till grain crop using an actual single row hand seeder with share and wheels. 31 *loves* being put in shallow with a no-till unit so if you can borrow or cheap rent a 3' no-till tow behind and need to do a large area then go for it.
@dhol267Ай бұрын
This may not be relevant in your context but the real issue with k31 comes down to the breeding and its intentional inclusion of endophytes. It was intended to make it pest and disease resistant but as many have learned with this approach- the long term is that you create issues with the health of the animals that graze on this variety and you reduce the overall biodiversity of the environment you are culturing. Again- maybe not something one cares about if it’s a home lawn but for farmers and those concerned with the ecological big picture of their property this variety really is a problem and should be avoided. It’s a big picture thing.

I just threw some down not even a week ago. It's my 3rd time seeding this fall. My first time was early September and i used up a bag of Champion 3x3 fescue seed that I bought from a nursery two years ago. I thought I stored it properly but for some reason it didn't come up this time. Maybe too old? I couldn't get back to the nursery to get more premium seed because they were always closed when I was off. So I went with what Lowe's had at the time and that was Sta- Green performance Max Tall Fescue. Threw a bag of that down and 3 weeks later.... nothing. So here we are, beginning of October and I came across the Pennington k-31 in Lowe's, and even though I saw this in the store and looked it up online and was met with not such great reviews, I went with it anyway because my yard is looking pretty bad. For the first time in years I lost a lot of grass this summer. I normally let my lawn go dormant and it's not an issue reviving it in the fall but this year I had used a lawn mowing company who came out and mowed every single week regardless if it was dormant or not, even after they assured me they would never cut the lawn if it didn't need it, so a lot of my front yard burned up this year. At this point I'm just desperate to get something to grow and cover up the bare spots and make my yard look green again. If it's not a great grass I'll deal with it next year in the spring. From what I read though this stuff is pretty indestructible and heat and drought tolerant and I know for a fact that the premium seeds I have gone with in the past have been very tough ro maintain in the summer heat. I do not have a lawn sprinkler system and I'm not up early enough to water during the recommended window and then I'm gone all day and by the time I come home it's pretty much night.

Kentucky 31 was developed by the University of Kentucky in 1931, hence the name. at its creation it was intended as a drought tolerant cultivar. in the last 93 years since it was created the genetics of grass has improved so much that even the least drought tolerant modern cultivars are still more drought tolerant than k31 rendering it a cheap pasture quality ground cover that has no business in a yard that wants to be used by even just the dogs. you get what you pay for.

Tall fescue is the only grass that can survive long term and not go dormant in Northern Virginia with hot summer 95°F days and cold winter nights at 20°F. It clumps if not cut short. It scratches human skin with rough leafs causing itching and it may have an itchy residue. It is yellowish green not green. The leafs are stiff not soft like a good lawn should be. I'm sure tall fescue dulls lawnmower blades quickly. If the lawnmower blade is not near razor sharp it gives a tearing cut to tall fescue. I'd sharpen up a shredder lawnmower blade with a chainsaw flat file before every cutting taking a couple minutes. I'd run the mower at at-least 3,600 rpms. That's above the recommended blade speed for a residential mower. Those both made for a nicer cut. I'd mulch grass with the twice a week mowing. Tall fescue's cuttings are itchy on your skin. Cutting tall fescue at 2" where it needs to be to be tolerant to barefoot walking and not clump is like cutting a wet sponge. It takes lots of lawnmower power. In Northern Virginia the lawn would get a red haze in it sometimes that I thought was some type of disease. Keeping it short, cutting about twice a week and deep watering every two weeks worked well. It got four fertilizing a year along with pre-emergent grab grass killer in the spring. For all that work, it is still not a lawn you'd want to lay on or walk on barefoot, but at a 2" cut it is somewhat nice. Now in Indiana mowing with the typical mix seed grass is much easier and walking on it is fine. It does go dormant when temperatures start going over 85°F without much rain.
@slimdude20113 ай бұрын
You've made a big mess of that job! Why can't people just plant grass seeds the way it's been planted for centuries? Pre-germination is total waste of time and most likely, you'll end up with bad results because, it's being done incorrectly from the beginning. Manufacturers prints the instructions on their product for the users to follow, but no. Some people are going to do what they want to do anyway regardless of, and they wonder why it doesn't work out. The problem wasn't the type of grass seed, it was your incorrect method of applying it. When you plant new grass seed, you are supposed to use a starter fertilizer (unless the starter fertilizer is already in it), not Milogranite. Milogranite is an organic, slow-release fertilizer, and it's to be used on already established lawns, not with newly planted grass seed. That's what starter fertilizer is for! Planting grass seed should only take an hour or less to plant, depending on the area, not a 2-weeks project. The time that it took you to pre-germinate the grass seed, the job could've been done a long time ago. I like to work smarter, not harder!
@inkstains13 ай бұрын
At 3:55 he uses a starter fertilizer, the Milorganite is only used to help throw the wet seed out using a spreader. Pre-germination is not really a time saver, it uses less water. If you hate pre-germination, then don't do it. But it's very handy for me because i did it about 6 times this summer and i don't have in ground irrigation but i had great germination. I am not wanting to water bluegrass for 20 days... some of those seed will dry out for sure. Not with pregerm tho. If you've got an irrigation system, I suppose you can hate on pregerm because you've got all the water you need.

The starter fertilizer used was “Scott’s Turf Builder triple action built for seeding”. Long name, great product that uses Mesotrione to fight weeds. Did you even watch the video?

@@suburbanacreage I've never heard of putting weed control on newly planted grass seeds, that hasn't germinated yet. There are no weeds anyway, because it's only seeds. After all the hassle of what you had to go through to pre-germinate, I bet you won't do that again! You will save time and money.

Dumb comment. You didn't watch the video very closely. Pre-germinating can also save many days of watering, saving time and money. It establishes much quicker, before your existing lawn is overgrown.

@@slimdude2011 You aren't very educated then. Putting down tenacity is very common. Other weeds will pop up that already exist in the lawn because of all the watering, fertilizer, and bare soil.
