This may not be an appropriate application for everyone, but it's perfect for us. We rent a house in Seattle that has no air conditioning, and we aren't allowed to make any structural changes. Only a few windows open, and all but one are tiny, so we do our best using cross ventilation and fans in the windows to exchange the air, but it's still 80+ degrees inside the house between 1-7 pm. THIS is a perfect solution for us, so thank you, fixitsamo, for taking the time to make this video.

Portable air conditioners only need a small window. They work just like a window unit but sit inside the room on the ground with a tube used to expel the hot air via the window.
@DeeDee-ff3mb6 жыл бұрын
I keep my windows closed throughout most of the day and have them open at night, one on each side of the house for that cross ventilation. If I cross-vent during the day time, I’m blowing out the cool air I generated over night and taking in the hot outside air. My rule of thumb: fans are removed and the window is closed before sun hits that side of the house. I used to underestimate the how much heat the sun actually generates; I think most people do. Blackout curtains, close doors to rooms. Inside fans stay on to continue air circulation. There’s a lot of variables, what works for me might not work for everyone. It keeps my place cooler than it is outside. Tolerable.

The insulated cooler this guy used was a nice touch. I'd recommend freezing half gallon jugs and setting them in uniformly to fill the entire cooler with solid ice, basically, & only run enough water that you need to fill the circuit/make it circulate. Pretty neat idea. However I would suggest 1 improvement for people trying this.. Right now if the connection between the copper and plastic ever gets loose, it's right over the fan and to my mind that could be dangerous since it could short out the fan and potentially start a fire. You can mitigate this risk by having the copper tube be longer and bending it so that it's lower than the fan's electrical compartment and perhaps further back.

Put the return line and the pick up line at opposite ends of the cooler. It will give the returning warm water a chance to get cooler before recycling it back thru. As it is now, the warm water is dumping out right where the pick up tube is and mixing with the cold water right away. That will raise the temp of the water getting sucked up. Meanwhile the coldest water in the cooler is nowhere near the pick up tube. If you really want to extend the life of your ice. Connect the return line to a another coil of copper tubing. Bury it in a layer of ice, but above the water line. That way, the returning warmer water has a chance to cool before dumping back into the ice chest where the water has already been cooled. You should end up with even colder water circulating thru the system. Assuming you have your pump set at a very low speed. Your coolant source will be depleted in no time if you pump the water thru too fast. Because heating of the water will outpace the cooling of the water. Good Luck!

So I actually did this. The wife is mad because it looks trashy in the house. I spent a little more than $150 because I did a more heavy duty water pump, heavy duty fan. I absolutely love it and I’m proud of what I did to helping supplement the cooling to our house. The only downside is the condensation. Every 15-30 seconds, a few drops of water comes down from the condensing copper tubing, so I have to keep a towel under the fan

Interesting. Would have liked to see how long that ice last (blowing cool air) before needing to be replaced. I know it is somewhat temperature dependent, but would have been an interesting data point.
@caribbeanman3379 Жыл бұрын
You can make it last longer by using bottles with frozen salt water in place of naked ice cubes Then you can just pop the bottles of brine back into the freezer when they thaw out completely. Makes for very easy reuse. Salt added to water causes it to melt more slowly. I think a good setup would probably last at least 4 hours.

I have an innovation for you. If the air inside the tube enters the copper with a fan or air pump and the copper is immersed in the iced water from the outside, you will get cool air as a result of air friction with the copper pipes. Repeat the process Make the air entrances at least five and the five exits are immersed in cold water with ice.

Wow I'm amazed at the amount of EXPERT AC guys LOL!! I'm pretty sure that the idea is to cool the air enough to make it comfortable, not a unit to run 24/7 you super-experts... The fellow did a good job and I KNOW it works because I did something similar but on a bigger scale. I used a a big old GMC 4 core truck copper radiator and I connected that bastard right to my outside water tap to test the theory and yes, with a fan blowing air through the rad i was able to comfortably cool my RV down to a fairly comfy 25C from an unliveable 44C in the summer in about 2 hours. The water flow was just a trickle and I used the 'waste' water to irrigate my yard and garden so win win hahaa!!!

The moisture from the air condenses on the copper tubing and drips under the fan, I placed my fan above the ice bath but the water overflows with time. I made a small overflow tube out of the ice bath that goes out the window(through the wood) and drips outside.
@josephsvennson56944 жыл бұрын
What did you do about the dripping under the fan?
@jamesmcgrath19527 жыл бұрын
Suggestion, turn your tubing off to the side, not good having then right over the motor and put a runoff pan under the coils.
@damienscullytoo4 жыл бұрын
I have an idea... I saw some people commenting about adding a mini fridge but the heat from the back of the fridge, and the energy it needs, would be to much for the gains. My Suggestion, and what I plan to do, is to use whisky cubes instead of ice in the water. They retain their coolness for longer and won't add to the water when melted like ice. Better yet, you can buy a few and keep some in your fridge and some to use, then change them every ~6 hours. essentially just one change a day. To keep it cooler and for longer you could also exchange the water for coolant which is more dense and then bottle it up at night in the fridge to cool down. This would result in seriously cool copper coils which means super cool air. Only problem would be the condensation on the coils, make sure to collect it in some way and keep away from electronics like the fan connected to mains!
