My “rice paper” hack is using tracing paper. It will go through a printer. Also if one is using an ink jet printer. Make sure the ink is completely dry. I’ll leave it overnight or use a hair dryer. Then you can lightly brush or spray glue over it to seal it. Is it kinda fussy? Yes, but it is a definite use what you got!

I've seen this before with the coffee but never without and I REALLY like it - I think it shows the texture of the paper beautifully... maybe I'll even add some dried tea for a little something extra! Thanks for the nudge! Hugs from the southern California desert, MK 🏜 🤗 Oh! And PS... apparently my son was hungry after work last night and swung through Yaco Bell on the way home. How did I know you ask? Because he brought me something too? LOL - - yeah. No. Because he left his napkins on the table. Brought somethin' home for mama after all. 😉

This technique is wonderful and the results are so beautiful! Also a great way to use the plain bottom layers of the napkins and not waste them. Would this work for decoupage? Will mod podge do too or is it too thick? Perhaps diluting with water? Thank you!

I noticed you use instant coffee to color your paper. I just want to help by saying that food used in art can possibly create mold in your supplies. Instant and regular coffee if left in a cup will grow mold. Even tea will grow mold. But mold is a weird thing and I don't know how easy it is to start a mold bloom. Conditions have to be right. Art supplies are often damp in jars and tubes or wet at times, and mold likes that. In college my art professor didn't let us have food in class. He made us fungus phobic. It's forty years later and I have never had mold in my art supplies. I don't eat where I paint, and I wash my hands before touching them. That reduces the chance of mold and cross contaminating all your paints, brushes, glues, etc. Then they all have to be replaced. I didn't feel comfortable mentioning this, but it's good to know if you work with watery type art supplies. Most people don't know it can happen. And there is no guarantee it will. But there is a risk where food and damp art supplies meet. Hope that helps. You can always research it.

Thank you for sharing your creativity. I too, love making rice paper with restaurant napkins, especially the brown one's.... I have just one question..... What would you suggest would be the best way to store rice paper? Will it stick together, needing something to separate each piece? (Hope that made sense) just wondering.... Thank you in advance for your response ❤

I really love this technique! I made a video a few years ago on printing on napkins, and you are right.......laser printer is best if you are going to get it wet like you did for this technique, where as ink jet printer works best when not doing a wet technique. I have only used the white part of napkins (some printed napkins have a white section), but I never thought of using the fast food napkins and I really love that idea. Thank you so much for sharing 😊 Hugs.....Janie

this is a lovely technique, BUT, please don't go snag "stacks of paper napkins from fast food establishments", those are intended for the customers and need to be paid for by the proprietor. Encourage and crafters to go grab stacks is ultimately costing the business. You can purchase your own unbleached napkins or paper towels in most grocery stores or Amazon. It's also not Upcycling if you're taking a item that's intended for a use and using it for something else, Upcycling is when you use something that would otherwise go to waste. Your project is lovely but please don't encourage taking items that were intended for customers

Those turned out awesome! Around here they never give napkins anymore! Lol (From a prior post) I turned my scissors into a "jute station" caddy. I spray painted my vintage over sized scissors black. Put them in a tall Ball jar. I rolled up two skeins of Dollar Tree jute into balls. I kept part of the string sticking out and used a mini clothes pin to keep it up on the lip of the jar. It's so cute sitting in my kitchen window! 🪟

I did this using plastic wrap as my non-stick surface. I just tape the plastic wrap down with painter's tape so that it doesn't move around then apply the glue solution the plastic wrap and then to the napkin or tissue paper. It is very easy to remove the napkin from the plastic wrap, and you can reuse the plastic wrap two or three times. The side of the napkin facing down on the plastic wrap becomes very shiny.

I’ve done something similar with leftover tissue paper (from presents) with clear silicone caulk. I think the glue would make it much easier! The caulk takes a long time to dry.

Wouldn’t it be easier to boil your water you’re going to mix with the glue and melt your instant coffee in it, then when it cools, mix it with your glue?
