How to Un-Knit or Un-Purl in Knitting

THIS IS SO HELPFUL! I'm not a skilled knitter... at all.... like, I'm really terrible :P I usually tear my whole project apart when I make a mistake. With these new-found knitting powers, I'll be unstoppable!! I might even make.... a _face cloth_

missykim I used to do that but now, I make a lifeline. Simply take a piece of scrap yarn and thread it through a yarn needle. Then, take the needle and feed it through all of the stitches that are currently on your knitting needle. Make sure the yarn is long enough so that it hangs a little bit off of each side. Then continue knitting as usual. If you make a mistake, you just rip the work back to the lifeline, insert your knitting needle through the loops that are on the yarn lifeline, and begin again from there. You can even put the lifeline every row if you want to, especially if it's a complex or multiple row pattern. Also, you could just type in knitting lifeline into KZbin. 😄

Genious! I have been pulling the tread through the loop ever so gently so i don’t lose the stitch and then gently fishing it back on the hook before the whole thing unravels lol. It’s like diffusing a bomb. This is so much better! Wooooo!

This saved my whole project! I was knitting the arms to my jumper and forgot where I had left off and knitted the wrong row! I usually unravel everything because I struggle with taking stitches off my needle and unravelling and getting the same amount of stitches back onto the needle! Life saver! Thank you!!! Xxx

However if you unpick your purl stitches that way they will be twisted on the left needle and you will have to untwist them before you can work them again.

You’re correct! You have to pick up the purl stitch by putting your needle through below the purl bump .

If you can recognize the stitch is backward, with the leg in front going back, just work into the back loop. Easy peasy

You'd have to remember to pick out the mistake before you knit the last one. I was thinking of maybe arriving at the second last loop before finishing the row to undo the loop; for if there are, let us say, 21 times the yarn looping over the knitting needle in one row; and you wanna make sure you have 20 times; the yarn looping over the knitting needle the same as all the other rows. You're not counting 20 of them four times every 5 times you're looping the yarn over the knitting needle while you're knitting- it would take longer to knit. In my opinion, to explain my point is to arrive at the second last loop; and if need be, undo the loop before you get to the end. This saves you counting and you're not counting four times after looping the yarn over the knitting needle five times.

Is your stitch twisted the wrong way on your un-purl?

No, the yarn looks different depending on what you are un-stitching. A knit stitch will face forward, hence the V which you hook back onto your needle, but a purl stitch faces away from you, hence the vertical bar you hook back onto your needle :)

I believe it is seated the wrong way. I've seen other videos that tell you to put the needle in from the bottom when undoing a purl stitch.

@@beccabgood1 You are correct, unpicking a purl stitch the way it is shown in this video put's it on the needle twisted. You should go in to the purl stitch from the front not the back which places it back on the left needle in the correct position to work it without messing about.
