How to Unclog a Bathtub Drain Using a Snake (Drum Auger)

This little useful tool saves me from calling the local plumber every three months. Easy to use and works like a charm!

Home maintenance is not something I say I really particularly enjoy. However, it is a required unless you want to hire a third party to take care of it. Honestly, I do take some pride in doing chores and home maintenance around the house.
It seems every three months, my bathtub drain gets clogged. Both myself and my girlfriend have lots of hair and this just seems to be the duration in getting a new clog.
I am not a fan of using drano or any other chemical de clogger as they are not good for the environment and usually do not work that well.
I purchased this $18 drum auger or snake as it is called, online at Amazon. It came with decent instructions and has really allowed my to prevent calling the local plumber and spending $100 plus to have them come out and clear a drain.
I highly recommend this cheap auger to clear drains to anyone that is a home owner and wants an effective and easy to use tool when required.

Are you going in from the drain or the overflow? I would recommend trying going through whatever way you aren't going in from and see if that makes a difference.

If you rotate it clockwise on extraction instead of counter-clockwise, it won't splatter everywhere. You're loading up the coil at the end like a spring and it's snapping loose when it gets pulled past its point of resistance.

Holy [cussword], I tried it and it *worked*! I was reluctant to use the auger I bought a few years ago at Ace Hardware for $15, because I am not very good with tools. But once I knew to use the upper drain opening and not the one at the bottom of the tub (which will get you exactly nowhere), it was extremely easy once I got that covering off. (Seriously, without the Internet, I would never have known that covering was over the main drain opening.) I could hear it sliding through the drain under the tub and it didn't meet very much resistance, so I just pulled it out (nothing but a little soap-scuzz on the coil) and then ran the water like I normally run it for eight minutes. It was clear as a bell! I keep a hair-catcher over the bottom drain-opening (and I kept it there while unscrewing and rescrewing the covering on the top opening so the screws wouldn't fall into the bottom opening), so I think there was just a wad of soap-scuzz in there that the coil pushed out of the drain and into the pipe. Now when I take a shower and the water flows out of the tube at the rate it's supposed to, I can say that I did that because I know how to do that!

@@JMGENTERPRISES Here's another thing that helps you clear gunk out of very old shower drains without using environmentally-damaging chemicals: Pour 2-3 quarts of boiling water 2-4 times in succession down the drain. Of course, you want to be *extremely* careful conveying the pot of scalding water from the kitchen to the bathroom. If it's an upstairs bathroom, you might want to just boil the water right on the spot in an extra-large-sized hot-pot so that you're not imperiling yourself by carrying a pot of dangerously hot water up one or more flights of stairs.

you my friend need to get a hair catcher and use that to cover the normal drain. that would help ALOT. I do, because I too shed hair alot. lol. For me, as a result, I only clean the tub clog at most 1 every 6 months. since the hair catcher cover gets 99% of the hair that falls off. Best of luck!

Don’t have this exact model, but a similar one, used it on tub drain and went down the exact drain in this video and retrieved a piece of lid that broke off a liquid soap bottle and helped to clog the pipe. This auger works!

I had a problem with my kitchen sink connected on the same pipe as my washing machine. tried the siphon (as we call it in french) and Drano... no result. I bought a similar tool an Amazon with no instructions whatsoever. I was puzzled. Thank you for your video. I was able to unclog the main pipe.

I found the clog after I put the snake soooo deep. I used the whole snake! I think it’s not made to pull out the whole thing because it wouldn’t pull back into the round thing anymore. I’m still confused about how to pull it back. So I just pulled it back with my hands and the whole thing started turning into like circles and splashing junk all over me. I my feet and my legs and all over the tub and the curtain. It was nasty. But I kept pulling, and I finally got the mess that was clogged in my tub. It was huge!! Now I still don’t know how to put it back into the orange thing cuz it’s all out! What I did was I rinsed the thing with hot water, then I put it on top of a plastic bag, a big one and a big towel to let it dry, and I took it out of the tub and left it there. I have no idea how I’m Gna get that thing inside the orange circle again! Please help!!

Hair burns very easily. You could try a torch style cigarette lighter and see how that works.

This tool is amazing. I am planning on getting this tool to unclog my kitchen's sewer pipe. But I do have one concern. What do I do if I can't pull the cable out after inserting it a few meters deep?

I have never tried a kitchen sink. I have never really heard of them getting stuck before. Just pull back and twist counterclockwise. It will eventually come out 🙂

hey so i tried this but my auger would hit something and then start winding in reverse...felt like i hit the bottom of something and the auger wouldnt get further and then when i pull it out i dont see hair or anything

Make sure to keep hold of the rotating knob so it does not start unwinding in reverse. You may want to try going through the bottom drain the tub as well and see if you have better results.

I need to go through the other drain but it has that annoying mesh thing you showed in the video /: so i dont think I can get the auger through 🥲

This was great, thanks. But may I recommend that you get a mesh to cover your drain so that you could avoid the hair build up in the future and then not have to snake it once or twice a year

I bought mine in a "like new" unboxed from Amazon and the wires are a little bit rusted.. i am wondering if anyone who bought it new and in box, if the wires are rusted or did some guy buy the tool used it and returned it. It doesn't stink like stink water so im a bit confused why.

Sounds like the wires were exposed to water causing it to rust. Mine is slightly rusted from general use and still works as it should. Be sure to always dry it or it will rust further.

reporting back here -- i got the amazon snake and snaked thru the top tub drain handle as shown in the video and all was fine, it got some hair out for sure. however, while it felt clear inside the pipe and was clear after a few more tries, and it did help the water drain a bit, it did not fix the clog fully. i could not fit the snake in the bottom drain to try there because it has the metal cross braces in it and the auger would not squeeze thru those. same issue for the bathroom sink. i dont want to force it too much and get it stuck, so i think i will have to go get another auger with a thinner/skinnier point. or maybe i should just try harder to force it past the drain braces anyway, not sure (i probably could do that)??

Came across this video while searching on using snakes to unclog a drain. Just used one on a clogged kitchen sink. Clog was pretty far down as it took a good 10 to 12 foot of snake before I saw the water drain. Pulled up some assorted gunk and a safety pin of all things! As to tubs, I have a cleanout plug which makes access very easy. Of course if you have standing water it would be like unleashing old faithful once you remove the plug :-).

I would try some odor neutralizer liquid and see if that helps. I haven't had that issue before. Doesn't sound pleasant 😕

What if it's a kitchen sink? The clog is likely to be grease and maybe food items instead of hair. Is an auger like this going to be just as effective with that?

Bruh, once you start spinning it counter clock wise to take it out, just pull the cable out with your hands to avoid any splatters

You can use either. Sometimes one or the other is harder to get the auger down into.
