Congratulations! The "flap" part of the choke at the top is usually has spring pressure to keep it closed until some type of heating begins working on the spring that closes the choke in the first place. Sometimes the spring is on the carb itself or sometime on the manifold below the carb. So, what you are describing seems normal unless there is a bind caused by mechanical interference.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage12 жыл бұрын
That particular carb is a 1977 model, and it is one of the versions that uses a divorced choke..meaning the choke coil assembly is mounted in the intake and has a rod that runs up to the carb. If your intake does not have provisions for that, then you'll either need to consider finding another carb that has the integral choke, swapping intakes, or resorting to using a manual choke because those carbs can't be converted to use the integral choke.

@WhoSaidTyler Well I took the inlet fitting off again and it turns out that the gasket is for a 1" diameter inlet and the gasket is located on the forward edge of the inlet fitting not the sealing flange, and it was there! I was so worried about over torquing the inlet fitting that i just didn't tighten it enough I guess. I tightened it up and no more leak. Its all trial and error at this point, this is my first project car ever so I'm learning as i go along, Thanks again
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage12 жыл бұрын
Well just to reiterate the video...you need to have spring tension to make the choke come on and then a source of heat to make the choke disengage. That one came with a 2GV, which means it has the choke coil mounted on the intake and a rod running upward to the choke flap. Those usually are very simple and reliable but sometimes the linkage will hang up and make the choke/fast idle stay on.

on my ridin mower, i love having a manual choke. that old carb has seen better days, and i have to pull it apart for cleaning 3 or 4 times a season. if im mowin and it gets really dusty, the carb will start cloging. when it starts to clog, i can give it just a little choke to bring it back from lean
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage13 жыл бұрын
@KCBCA Your problem appears to be that the fast idle setting is too high. There is a SEPARATE adjustment screw for that, and it's located on the passenger side of the carb between the choke housing and the carb itself, at the bottom. You'll have to really peer in there and find it, but it's there. I'm not talking about the two idle mixture screws which are on the base of the carb facing front. The one you want is far on the passenger side.

Really enjoy your videos on these Quadrajet carbs. As you went through in the first three parts of this series, the secondary portion of my Quadrajet would not function no matter what. Unlike your carburetor, mine has only one vacuum pull off at the rear which acts as a limit on those air doors and also acts as a choke pull off. So there are two linkages, one for the air door, one for the choke pull off. Well the second linkage had fallen off and was jamming up the end of the throttle shaft for the secondary. Could not see this from on top of the carburetor as it was on the engine because the electric choke housing covered it up along with some coolant hoses which run right next to the choke housing. Believe it or not....this is on a Mopar 360 cubic inch...Rochester Quadrajet, stock from the factory 1987! Been running on the primary jets only for the past 25 years maybe!! Lol!
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage8 жыл бұрын
Haha, how about that. Yep, Mopar used Qjets from 1985-87 because Carter Carburetor exited the carb business during 1984-85.

Will look into that when the wethr warms up.

I actually like Edelbrocks since I've messed around with them and seen how simple they are to tune. It sounds at first blush like the secondaries are coming on when they should. That'll either come back to be a fuel supply issue or air supply. Those have that counterweight air door which really shouldn't give trouble. Will it open the 4bbl if you go into it gradually or does it just lay over any time you try to get all 4bbls opened up?

I have a automatic electric choke on a Quadrajet on my 305 engine. The Carb has been rebuilt. Can't seem to make adjustments that will make my Chevy truck drivable. It will idle in park but the minute you put it into drive it stalls. I have noticed that the choke plate flutters a bit when it is open (hot). I suspect I either have some sort of vacuum leak. Is it the linkage responsible for holding the choke plate open steady or is it the vacuum?. Please give me your thoughts on this.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage13 жыл бұрын
@KCBCA It faces the front of the car. Get yourself a short screwdriver that you are sure will fit in there and start the engine cold. Let it idle fast as you describe and begin turning that screw out(counter clockwise) The idle should start dropping down to a more reasonable level. Adjust it so it's still idling faster than when warmed up but not crazy fast. Again, this screw is located on the PASSENGER side of the carb. It doesn't screw into the carb itself.

my choke on my M4ME carb on my 1986 350 suburban was wired open when i bought it, and the low idle screw was screwed all the way in, so it was idling like 2000 rpm. i removed the wire, and choke plate. set the idle, and got the linkages working.now, i need to put the choke plate back on now. the choke missing doesnt affect my worn carb that much, because it runs super rich anyways. i know before long, im going to replace my carb

@piroguy14 I don't have access to that info unfortunately. Your best bet would be to take the filter housing with you, but keep in mind that gasket is nylon(plastic), not paper or rubber. You can also check the replacement filters to see if they include a seal. I often buy a carb kit just to use for spare gaskets, it'll have one in it.

Another thing that can happen esp. after 40 years is the intake or the entire engine gets swapped for another one that doesn't have the choke mounted on the intake,,, because those are rare. Then the choke plate just stays in one position with no way to control it

I'm trying to fix a buick 4.1 v6. The choke looks like it's just stuck open. When I push it there is no resistance it just bobs up and down. Do you think a spring or somthing is missing. The choke doesn't do anything when running or when giving it gas. It just stays open
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage3 жыл бұрын
Missing or broken. Rod from the choke plate goes down to a small link that rides on the inner end of the choke "pivot". Sometimes they don't get put back correctly. The spring inside the housing is integral to the entire operation of the choke. Studying a picture or exploded diagram will help you understand what you are looking at.

What makes that choke housing work? I just ordered a carb that has a housing like the one shown. There's a block off plate on my manifold that I know works everything, but can't seem to find what Im going to need to make it work. I know a bit about qjets. I'd like this to be my first one with a functioning choke though. Lol
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage10 жыл бұрын
It works off of hot air. A steel line normally leads from a connection at the top rear of the air horn down to where that block-off plate is. There is supposed to be a part called a heat stove in the intake manifold. A heat stove is simply a length of steel tube that will fit inside that recess there and causes the air passing through said tube to get hot. The air is drawn through the heat stove and into the choke housing by a small vacuum orifice inside the choke housing. Of course, there is a tube that leads from the heat stove to the choke as well. What kind of engine is this? Oldsmobile commonly used hot-air chokes and the parts for those are easy to find, but although Chevy did use some hot-air chokes, the parts are slightly more scarce.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage10 жыл бұрын
Google Oldsmobile hot air choke and look at the images for that search. You'll see right away the different parts I described. It's a very simple system.

What happens if you try to adjust those two screws and there's no response. Is there a rule of thumb about how to adjust them for instance should I turn it all the way to the right and then back it off maybe one turn
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage10 жыл бұрын
If they don't respond, then possibly something is affecting the mixture, such as a vacuum leak, or the carb is dirty/running too rich. Sometimes the ignition timing being out of adjustment can have the same effect. On the mixture screws, a baseline is to run them in(clockwise) until they lightly seat, then back out 2-1/2 turns.That should always get one running.

@TylersNeighborhoodGarage9 жыл бұрын
Steve Acevedo Steve those don't have an idle control valve. Those are a fuel-injected part. Your car has a plain old carburetor, which in this case is computer-controlled but still adjustable. If you don't feel capable or have the means to adjust the carb and timing and check for vacuum leaks, then I suggest you find a GOOD garage with mechanics that have been there long enough to have worked on carbureted cars and have the following done: 1. Check and adjust ignition timing 2. Check and adjust idle mixture if possible. Sometimes the adjuster screws are sealed. 3. Check and adjust automatic choke, fast idle speed and base idle speed. 4. Check idle-up solenoid for proper operation with AC on. I can further explain any of this if you desire.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage11 жыл бұрын
LOL. Thank you for your comments, they are duly noted. It's always refreshing to learn how non-mechanics say and do things. This tells me you definitely don't have anything better to do with your life. And the films I make aren't suitable for KZbin 😉

My Rochester quadrajet attached to my '74 Olds 98 will not start after sitting maybe 10 days unless primed. Any idea on how to correct this?

Not sure if my scenario matches your issue, but on my 78 Silverado, the fuel tank is mounted so low that the fuel drains back to the tank, emptying the fuel line, and applying a vacuum to the needle in the seat. If enough time has passed it won't break the vacuum and a splash of fuel in carb is needed. I have a clear fuel filter that will be empty, I crank until filter contains fuel, one pump on pedal, splash of fuel, and fires right up. Maybe I have a needle / seat issue, maybe I have a fuel pump issue. Hope this helps

Steve, If you watch some videos about Quadrajet rebuilds they talk about lead well plugs on the bottom of the center section of the carburetor, the section that holds the float, needle and needle seat, etc. Those plugs tend to develop slow leaks after thousands of heat cycles. You can melt them and replace with epoxy, JB weld, etc. Google up Quadrajet Well Plugs and you'll find info on this. When they leak slowly over several days the fuel in the carb bowl drains out, this causes hard starting because you have to wait for the fuel pump to refill the fuel bowl. I bet that's the cause of your issue.
