You are really helping don.. Can I ask please what wheel is best for o1 tool steel and d2 steel in hardened for surface grinding. And what wheel is best for hardened tool steel. Any help would be apreciated please

lbcustomknives I am assuming that you are using a surfacegrinder. A good rule of thumb is: The harder the steel, the softer the wheel.Both those steels are difficult to grind, so I would start with a 46-H,maybe even a 46-G which is difficult to find. Please use plenty of coolant. Themore the better. Best,Don

Hi don.. Thanks fir the advice it really helps.. I have just purchased another surface grinder. And very happy.. But I use a lot of grade 5 titanium and would like your recommendation please for what wheel would suite this type of grinding please.. It seems very gummy.. And loads the wheel very quickly.. Any help would be appreciated please

lbcustomknives I am not sure of the application here. Titanium is very difficultto grind. I suggest silicone carbide (green wheel), start with 60-i. Use lotsof flood coolant and use the edge of the wheel to remove stock.

Thanks. Great video. I was taught to dress the wheel to true it with the spindle and after that lower it a few tenths and run the dresser across the wheel once to rough up the surface for better cutting action. Is that reasonable?

Hello I need your help. For grinding with a cup stone (borazon) do I need to tilt the vertical head of the machine? Or does the cup face have to be parallel with the magnetic table? thank you.

So if I have a surface grinder with a 2" wide wheel is it best to rough up say 1-3/4 of it slightly below and leave only the back edge dressed for sizing/wiping? Would that make the parts grind faster?

bcbloc02 The Alundum will break off by itself as you grind. You do not rough up the wheel.

This is factually incorrect. When you dress the wheel it makes the particles sharp in the transverse direction, as opposed to lateral in relation to the axis of rotation of the wheel. Yes you made them dull and uniform from side to side, but forward and back you have created an angle between the face of the particle and the particles body to cleanly shear of material.
