If the chip you're driving is a constant power device then dropping the voltage will simply increase the current demand. This will increase the current draw on the battery, reducing lifetime and increasing heat. For many circuits a higher voltage and lower current are desirable.

Just a small tip. Undervolting is useful for 90% of the CPUs out there, except in the case of low power draw CPUs (like the U series from intel). If you have a U processor, you’re better off just not wasting the time trying to do this. Power wise, they’re already insanely low draw so you really shouldn’t have any heat problems even on the thinnest of laptops, and they’re normally always near their voltage minimums already, so any difference you might gain will be minuscule, while there’s a higher risk for BSoDs and just general instability.

Hi! I have one question.. After undervolting on XTU do I need to start the program (XTU) every day with my computer or it just does its job alone? Thank you!
@GotAdam12 жыл бұрын
is there anyway to undervold a hp envy with 11th gen it seems like it prevents xtu from installing and other software has the voltage menus blocked. I have installed windows fresh to get ris of all of HP bloatware which is a ridiculous amount but still no luck with xtu

Hi, I have two questions to this, as I am pretty new to tweaking notebooks in that manner (actually in the instance I purchased an XPS 15). First, I presume you will also need to adjust the CPU cache voltage in XTU, don't you, or is this just required once you use throttlestop? Second, have you ever undervolted a notebook and it did not come back after BSOD? Cheers and thanks in advance Christian

Thank you, this really helped me. The Intel stress test now shows my I7 9750H to still thermal throttle at -0.150V but instead of the initial 3.3GHz throttle clock, it's now at 3.95-4.0 GHz. I will not try to push it lower, as this really should be enough.

I have an i7 9750h, i haven't tried this yet but if you get 4 ghz out of that, that's insane!

Lower voltage gives your cpu more headrooms to reach higher clockspeeds without heating, so now you're consuming more energy, you should try to lower the clockspeed as well(underclocking) if that's a problem.

What about battery life? You mentioned that undervolting can potentially increase battery life in the video. Any results on that?
@Madbrad2000 Жыл бұрын
Naturally it will since your power is drawing less power, but I doubt it's substantial

after undervolting to -160 still smooth and good

Currently doing this to my new Alienware M15 R2 as the idle temperature is around 50°C which I wasn't too impressed by. Will be interesting to see how this helps, thanks for the video!

@@PlyingScroll Never did it in the end, as I found it would void the warranty. But I did a bit of research and people were saying the idle temperature dropped by about 5°C, so high 40's... I have found though that setting it to 'quiet' in the Alienware control centre helped quite a bit. One thing I have noticed instead was the slightly annoying high pitched noise the fans make when they throttle up, something to maybe Google. Otherwise though, I'm really really happy with this laptop. I can't imagine getting anything else. Would also recommend EuroPC to buy it, that's where I got mine from, second hand but still with 1 year dell warranty.

I have a question, is it necessary to use other benchmarking tools like Cinebench, Geekbench, AIDA64 etc.? Or can I just use the XTU stress test? TIA.

Both don't support my cpu, IDK why but my laptop doesn't have a brand name in (it's called "Quad-core processor") and it has a 1.4 ghz.

This may be a dumb question. But are the undervolting changes being saved in the hardware somehow? Or is it saved in Windows? What I want to know is if it my hardware still will be undervolted after reinstalling Windows.

Hey man. I have the XPS 15 i7-9750H Would you recommend using Throttlestop? not sure if XTU is compatible..
@GravayMan4 жыл бұрын
I noticed that your laptop is using an i7-8750H processor... will XTU still work with this processor? It doesn't seem to be listed in list of compatible product(s)/processors on the download page. Thanks for your response.

Hi there, i have a ROG strix G17, may i ask whats the difference between undervolting using the application youre mentioning, and undervolting by going into my bios when i boot my laptop?

my MSI is 4 years and a bit and i recently got into it as i have issues thermal throttling, i ended up at -0.85mV and even if it's still struggling i dig run cinebench and average went from 2.860MHz to 3.400MHz over a 10min run. and a score from 5221 to 6772.

great video, I was able to complete your steps on almost all my laptop except for my 2012 Macbook Air, it doesn't have a core voltage offset option, so I am wondering if I have any other ways pf changing it within Intel ETU?
