Just like the old Bolens Diablo, I had 2, once you packed a trail they would pull impress amounts of cedar poles and logs, it had a heavier duty steering bar than the snow dog from the look of it, if you really buried it you disconnect sled leaned on steering bar and it climbed out with little effort, 2 things about them that you had to be careful with ..... deep snow they would porpoise badly and .... the worst .....on a packed trail and steep hill they can flip over if you hit the brakes with much speed, your weight on sled forces machine to slide sideway and over it goes, hell of a thing to face those spinning tracks. Ive been there.

I wonder if you fabricated a shield on the front to somewhat compress the snow right before the tracks hit it, if that would prevent it from getting stuck in the soft stuff.

I been looking at the snowdog locally. Brainstorming how can I outfit my Otter sled to haul my brother whos handicapped with minimum unstableness (or wipeouts which would be like a medical emergency) and all our gear. Getting too old to haul a wheelchair guy across hazardous or general winter terrain to go ice fishing. Try big truck ruts for instance. I may try to find a old bucket seat from a vehicle with the lap and shoulder seat belt.

I did exactly that, I used the tunnel from an 86 eltigre and put a 15 hp princesses auto engine in it, built a nice aluminum engine guard/hood and it works great, our family uses the hell out of it we’ve even taken it on a skidoo rally and plan to do more this winter👍

@PowerModzOfficial6 жыл бұрын
jdyer4066 I don't think you would want more power after driving this. I've put about 300kms on it in all conditions now. You don't want to go any faster on the trails and higher hp will just give more track spin...It might handle a little more but imho not really needed as it'll still get the work done. Oh and out of those 300kms at mostly wide open and it's of deep snow I have on my gone through less than 5 gallons of fuel.

Wow, it's like a Diablo Rouge... without all the annoying horsepower. That design was abandoned back in the 1970s for a reason: it sucks. Putting the rider's weight on the track was found to work better. No other snowmobile made in the last 40 years would have gotten stuck under those conditions.
@PowerModzOfficial6 жыл бұрын
My plans would not have started and stopped in that snow and Id hate to drag my elan out of there. I always say...try something first and if you don't like it go ahead and slam it but if you've never tried it then you really have nothing to base your assumptions on. The diablo rouge was much larger and heavier than the snowdog as well Im pretty sure you can see that by looking at it - the rouge I wouldnt be as keen on.
@terracethornhill6 жыл бұрын
You wouldn't have had to drag your Elan out of there because it wouldn't have gotten stuck. I have 3 decades of playing with snowmobiles to base my assumptions on, as well as my career as a mechanic, a decent understanding of physics and some knowledge of the history of that design concept. Tractor type snowmobiles just aren't as capable as conventional ones and it's all down to where it carries the weight, tractors carry it on a sled behind them, conventionals carry it on the track. One uses the load to make traction, the other uses the load to make drag, and there's nothing you can do to get around that basic fact. If you like your machine, great, just don't kid yourself that it's anything other than inferior to conventional designs.
@PowerModzOfficial6 жыл бұрын
Ya you got me, this whole snowmobiling thing is new to me...and this is the first time ive ever driven an elan. Thanks for watching though!
@terracethornhill6 жыл бұрын
My point was simply that a Snowdog will never outperform any conventional snowmobile at any task due to its laughably poor design. Thanks for your reply though, this has been fun.
@terracethornhill6 жыл бұрын
Then buy one Laura. Heck, I could sell you one, they're available through one of my suppliers. I've never bothered trying to sell them because I don't like the design. I live in the mountains, so climbing ability is essential for any snowmobile around here.
