In this short (3:30 minute video) we look at the process of upgrading the memory in a QNAP NAS (Network Attached Storage device). This additional memory will be helpful for hardware intensive tasks such as streaming multiple media files simultaneously and transferring large amounts of data. We're using a 4-bay TS-464eU, but the process should be similar for other models of unit. If you have any questions feel free to ask them in the comments. If this video was helpful please 'like' and 'subscribe' to my channel. It really helps me out a lot. Thanks!

Of course the cat had to give her opinion (around 2:15 minute mark). 😹

I have just upgraded mine with 32GB with 3 noctua fans. Im also runing 4x 8TB disks like you. Im curious how your temps on your disks ? For now mine is standing freely but are going in a rack when data is done moving from the old nas. Im not sure but i think mine is running a bit high with about 40 - 47 degrees.

Hi! Thanks for checking out my QNAP video. My drives are running around 42°C under modest load, so believe yours are right about normal, as well (depending on the ambient temperature of the room). I believe Seagate rates them for up to 65°C max operating temp, but obv. you wouldn't want them that warm. 😉 If you've installed the fans I'm thinking of they may move a little less air (in order to be quieter), but doesn't sound like anything to be too concerned about. Try to keep your ambient temps down in the room where you install the unit and give it plenty of room to move air around it (not too densely packed in a rack) and you should be fine, in my opinion. Good luck, let us know how it works out for you!

Well it have been running for a few days now. And it is just jumping around in the 40s. 42 - 47C. So i guess its fine. Its now installed in a 9u rack closed. with UDM PRO SE and a 16 port unifi switch. I guess the room is about 20 - 22C. :) @@CompTechMike

Hello Mike, If you read the comment and still have the QNAP TS-464eU, do you know what is the max height of the heatsink that can be mounted on both nVme without touching the top cover? Thank you.

Hi Andy! Afraid this particular unit is currently deployed out-of-state, so I'm not able to open it and measure. But you can see the NVMe SSD drives in this video when I show it with the top of the case removed. Based on the components visible around them (including a coin cell battery and fan), I would guess at least three quarters of an inch of space. Should be sufficient for any standard heatsink currently available on the market: imgur.com/a/r9tEvK1 Hope this helps!

@@CompTechMike Thanks. QNAP support responded to my on the same question and recommended their heatsink with max height of 15 mm. Now I need to find what I need but not exceeding the max height recommended by Qnap support :)
