Looking to purchase my first NAS for home/personal use...been seeing a lot of talk re: PLEX...not knowing what it was about did some digging and this vid (by way of the QNAP site) was one of the resources I stumbled upon. This walk-through was superb! Clear and concise, easy to understand guidance and info...awesome work Craig! 👌🏾

Would be good to see how Plex player works via HDMI (HD station), as it hasn't been working for quiet some time, or supported natively
@scampilover002 жыл бұрын
@@QNAPUK yeah that's a shame. I currently use Chromecast, but would have been great to have it natively outputting through the HDMI ports on the rear

VERY disappointing. This is one of the prime reasons I bought the TS-464 (the ability to have it as my Home Theatre server, directly via HDMI). Plex was my goto app for this. Glad I didn't buy the subscription before finding this out!!
@Ichijoe2112 Жыл бұрын
@@Perrymasonry On the note of Subscriptions... Why not give Jellyfin a try? It's not that difficult to set up. Sadly I'm not aware of any HD App to play it off the box directly. But, there are Apps for Android TV and Roku. (I suspect), possibly even on Apple TV. And, unlike Plex, it won't even cost ya a dime.

@@Ichijoe2112 Thanks! I played around with Jellyfin a while back, might do so again. Right now I am getting good performance from Plex (basic) and AppleTV (all connected via ethernet). will see how this plays out....

"Dual M.2 PCIe Gen 3 slots enable NVMe SSD caching or SSD storage pools for improved performance or Edge TPU for AI image recognition." I'm buying one this weekend and wonder which is best for Plex, caching or storage pools. It's primary use will be Plex.
@QNAPUK Жыл бұрын
I personally use caching and helps the library browsing feel snappy, you could of course create a pool and move the metadata into into it with a bit of editing in Plex, but this would be more complex than a cache.

Something you forgot to explain when setting up the shared folder is what sort of permissions it requires for Plex to be able to see and access the media. Is it a public folder, should you restrict the permissions in any sort of way, whatever the csse. I feel like this would have been important to know.
@QNAPUK10 ай бұрын
Before you even get into Plex you should have already set things like folder permissions and other items to secure your NAS. You should have security setup in a way that no-one can gain access to any of your data without you wanting them to gain access.
@WilliamRay12310 ай бұрын
@@QNAPUK I was able to figure it out. I've only ever set up plex on a Windows PC, so I didn't know the folder structure when adding media folders to the Plex library. I also didn't know if you should restrict only certain users to the library, or if that would possibly cause Plex to not have permissions to access the media. Make sense? Wasn't as complicated as I made it obviously, but you only know what ya know.

Appears to be able to use Plex you need to pay a subscription (PLEX TV?). Why should this be? All i want is to be able to access pictures, videos etc that are on my QNAP TS-251D and view them on a TV that is in another room via the enthernet connections
@QNAPUK Жыл бұрын
The Plex Pass is only needed for certain features, such as if you wanted to connect a TV Tuner to the NAS or use things like Hardware Transcoding, there are a few others but the free version should allow you to access your own pictures/videos.

Any issues on 4K HDR or Dolby Vision UHD from the TS-464 as I'm looking to upgrade my QNAP for a Plex Server to direct play 4K HDR/DV REMUXES to my OLED.
@QNAPUK9 ай бұрын
All down to if Plex supports the file... if it does, with direct play, no problems at all.

Got one question, I got a qnap ts-464 I don't have plex pass, do I need to buy it? Watching anything on it is blurry like 480p, I know you got the hardware acceleration from plex pass, I don't is it manually recommended?
@QNAPUK Жыл бұрын
Personally, whilst I have a Plex Pass, my experience would be the same without it. I do not use things like Hardware Transcoding so wouldn't make a difference for me. Quality is not affected by having a Plex Pass, but if you are using transcoding without a Plex Pass you are relying on the CPU of the TS-464 to do the transcoding instead with software. Perhaps take a look in the settings of your Plex Server, perhaps you have the quality set low, in the Transcoder menu you have a few settings that might work better. I play without transcoding, making sure my players are something that can really play anything, like an Nvidia Shield or AppleTV.

On the note of buggy non-woking apps... Has anyone at QNAP, given much thought to virtualizing an instance of Android TV / FireTV OS in this space? And allow users to run APKs there? Honestly I'm quite interested in learning how to leverage this to eventually ditch my aging Shield TV Pro.
@andybb2 жыл бұрын
When I click on my Plex app on my desktop on Qnap it says 'Secure connections { are not supported for this application are you sure you want to open it ' and does not open a new web browser like on your demostration

Anyone having issues installing the qpkg file manually? I'm getting failed to install, the file upload time out. Same specs as video NAS
@Ichijoe2112 Жыл бұрын
Better question... WHY THE ALMIGHTY HELL is /dev/dri/cardx -- /dev/dri/renderD12x assigned to the admin / administrators group, instead of the correct video / render group? Asking for a friend, who doesn't want to install the pre-made store-front pkg file(s) of some very loud, but ultimately low-grade media serving software. Because Jellyfin are unable to pay the same fright as Plex. But, then on that argument, why haven't you contacted Emby yet? Plex used to be kinda-sorta good, but they have since fallen off a cliff. And, hell even Twoky is a better media server than Plex.
