Thanks for the walkthrough. After my first attempt I got either E.101 or E.200. I attempted to update from usb at that point but could not. Started over and reformatted the hdd as per your instructions and it worked. I had to do a System Reset via the xbox menu to get it to allow me to login properly and for all to work, but I'm SUPER stoked to have my xbone back! Cheers!

Thank you so much for this video!!! It's Oct. 12, 2016 and this method works the best!! I've tried the other method, the scripts for windows and it never works... It's best to do this in a Linux environment. Something about the windows environment keeps causing me to get error e101 even though i did everything right... I did this method with a 500GB drive, and it works great for fixing your xbox one. I used the update "OSU1" on both the drive and the thumb stick to boot from and no problems with a 500GB drive. I was also on the latest dashboard before i did this method. When I reboot the xbox one, it takes 30 seconds get from cold start to the dashboard. I also did 3 factory resets and no problems at all!!! FYI: IF YOU UPGRADE TO A LARGER DRIVE THAN WHAT YOUR XBOX CAME WITH, DONT DO A FACTORY RESET, IT WILL CAUSE YOU TO GET ERROR E102 AND YOU WILL NEED YOUR 500GB DRIVE AGAIN TO REPEAT THE PROCESS.... pretty simple if you just click on it you will see it will say mount one each portion of the drive if you unclick it , it will say unmount should show a arrow in each partition

Remember that there is now an OSUDT3 after the new Dash update. If you can't get this working with OSUDT2 then try using OSUDT3 or use the files from your original Xbox One hard drive.

5-year-old video and it is still useful. Rufus and Ununto both had tons of updates since then but the layout and auto-updates of the two software made things a bit easier. I really appreciate you taking the time to record yourself doing this for others. I do have one question... I Must say thanks very much for this video, i bought an ordinary 500GB Wester Digital laptop hard drive and followed all the steps and it worked just fix. On my first boot up i got an error message so i hold down the power button and wait for the game to shutdown then turned it back on again and it worked just fin. xXModdedWarfareXx thanks very much for your assistance with this issue i have been having your video was a great help. To anyone doing this method please note that you should conduct a factory reset after you have successfully booted up on the new hard drive. There will be some weird named file showing up on your console along with your previous accounts. This should not be as you are now on a new hard drive. If you try to run any game you eill receive errors so just do a system factory reset and all will work just fin.

Safety Note: If you are at all worried about nuking one of your drives in the machine because you selected the wrong /dev/sdX option, just unplug the SATA cables from all drives EXCEPT the new Xbox One drive which will prevent them from even showing up in Ubuntu.

Jrunner isn't supposed to install the files, but it works fine if you use the Xbox One HDD tool, then follow that with the OSUDT. The tool isn't designed for drive formatting, only for deleting and installing Windows on the drive.

This tutorial was a massive help thank you! although I wasn't able to complete it using it alone. Took quite a few hours to get it working, so thought I'd post my solution here for anyone who is stuck. I ran into heaps of troubles doing this but FINALLY got it all working... Biggest problem was all the E1x, E2x, E6x errors... I tried OSU1, OSU2 & OSU3... tried using them from a USB in the $.SystemUpdate update folder (or whatever it was called), tried them in the System Update volume; and used the Python scripts as noted above... still did not work. Maybe it was my model of XBox One, although to get it working what I did was: * Booted to Ubuntu * Formatted drives to partitions using the Python scripts * Reformatted the volumes for the ones that didn't work (weird) (as per this video). * Connected the original XBox hard disk & copied the System Update folder contents to my local network. (you could just use an external or something). - I noticed it was 8.8Gb or something, much larger than the downloads, anyways... * Copied the A & B folders; and updater.vfx or .vxf (or whatever the extension is) into the new SSD from my network share (or wherever you put your files). * Ran the Python xboxonehdd.py script. * Unmounted all the volumes. * Put the new SSD in the XBox One, fired it up and it successfully went through the preperation, updating, etc. I was starting to think I'd stuffed it until I reverted to the original hard disks updated files... now the XBox is running a treat on my brand new Samsung 850series EVO 500Gb... (I only did it for the speed boost). I don't play many games at all, just a few here and there so 500Gb is okay for me... but if money were no object, going the Samsung Pro 850 1Tb! Would be nice if XBox supported M.2 drives, but for now... this is pretty awesome. A GREAT SPEED BOOST... 7.30.2016 - Process still works here are some observations - Does not work for any HD larger than 2 TB - Unmount partitions before exiting Ubuntu - Make sure you use the correct OSUDT file, mine used OSUDT2 not 3 - Clonezilla process also works as an alternative if you have a working xbox HD - see user Xifx xbox replacement videos, there is a link to an updated xboxmaster file I used a combination of both moddedwarfare's process and Xifx's

For anyone asking if this still works, the answer is yes, but there is an extra step. I just did it this morning. First if there are any errors while using ubuntu, simply do it over. It seems more time i deleted the partitions and started the process over, the smoother it sent without giving any errors. Use OSUDT2 for the files to A and B. Make sure all 7 files are in each and the updater file is just next to A and B. Here is the newly required step. Since Update 3 is out, you have to download the OSUDT3 (Offline system update tool 3) from xbox.com Put it on a flash drive and follow the direction on the site for updating by usb. To do this you have the press bind and eject at the same time and hold them in. While holding tap the Xbox logo to power it on and keep holding bind and eject until you hear the chime again then let go. It will take a few minutes to download and install the update but in the end it works. I see people keep asking but the answer is yes it does. It's 7/10/2016 for reference.

There must be some steps missing. I've been trying to do this for 7 hours today. I followed the video precisly. Formatted the drive, copied the OSUDT2 files to the appropriate folders, and ran the scripts. No errors. I saw your extra steps so I copied the $systemupdate folder and files to another USB drive. I have my network cable unplugged. Inserted the USB, pressed Bind, Eject and Power until second power on beep. When I let go I get a screen with four options. I chose "Offline system update" USB (top right). I get error E102 right away.I've chosen other options too and cannot get it to continue.Is there something saved in the BIOS from the original hard drive? Before I removed origianl hard drive I reset to factory defaults, then signed in with my XBOX Live ID and followed the initial setup procedure. I'm uprading to a 2TB Seagate drive. ST2000LM007.

That screen means you did not initiate the process correctly. If you do it correctly it will auto load the flash drive. When you use ubuntu the trick that worked for me was to keep deleting the partitions and start over. doing that, I no longer had to individually format the partitions to ntfs and on about the third try it was making partitions in ntfs and simply clicking on the partition on the "files" tab make it mount the drive. It can be trick to get the osudt3 file (or any offline system update) to take., but when you do it'lll start automatically. Once you've done it a couple of times you can do it easily. Try to press and hold bind and eject and the same time. Line up your fingers and press at the same exact time. then simply stretch a finger over and even use a knee to touch the power button but dont let go of the bind and eject until the second startup chime.

When I first tried it I has errors, including the OSUDT2 having only 7 files in it instead of 8. Make sure that all 8 are there (before deleting the updater file)

Have all 8 files in $SystemUpdate folder on flash drive. I can't seem to boot without going to the Troubleshoot(ing) screen first. I was pressing the power with my left knee because it was easier than my right knee. I have the xobx in an AV cabinet where my processor is, which is about seven feet off the floor. I can't connect directly to the TV becuase the TV is at the same height and it's flush mounted in a cabinet. I can't get to the cables in the back of the TV unless I remove the TV from the mount and lay it on the floor. So, if I need to press the XBOX power button with my right knee, I'm in trouble.

So I recently got my 1TB SSD to work in my Xbox One. I used the update files from the original HDD. I had several cases of it not working until I realized that my USB/SATA adapter was not cutting it. Data wise its fine but I guess it wasn't properly formatting. I kept getting the same error that we are warned about in the video. Once I plugged it into the SATA cable on my desktop it worked on the first try.

Hi,. Do you have any idea why I succeeded to get well created all my partitions with their corresponding right size. But when I tried to convert them to XBOXONE partitions type with the last command sudo python ./xboxonehdd.py sdc, It did not work at all. I got as before (first command)..."Disk must have 5 partions..." It''s like that I can not open the disk. After I modified the python code and when I made a print of the array "disk", I got printed [ ], an empty array? Thanks for your help. Today I swapped my hard drive for a 1TB Samsung. It works like a charm. I'm installing Fallout 4 now, but I ran into a little problem. When I go to Settings -> Network I can't access the network settings. Do you have any idea as to why that is? Is it the wireless card that's malfunctioning? Maybe it's been damaged? Have you heard about any one with the same problem. Right now I'm using an ethernet cable to connect to xbox live.

+GDPGamingNetwork Yes but then you need to add the physical drive in virtual box so that Ubuntu can detect it and preform the formatting. Setting that up is more complicated which is why I just used a physical machine to run Ubuntu from.

I seem to be having a problem with this. I have done all the steps correctly. I think, however, when I try the drive in my console the green screen of death appears. Before putting the drive in the console the partions are mounted and the files are sent. But when I put the drive back in the PC the partions are corrupt. I am doing a complete format and trying again. Any tips?

Yes but when booting you have to use the OSUDT3 file on a flash drive to upgrade it or it'll just throw error codes. Look up the offline system update tool on xbox.com for the directions on how to do this.

+Mello Kevt I don't know anyone personally who has installed a drive larger than 2TB. SSD's should work but you need one that's 500GB or larger.

+Mello Kevt Why? Xbox One nor PS4 can handle the SSD speed, it would be just a small increase in load speed but nothing like using it on a PC.... And they are expensive for just a small boost, it would actually be better to buy a good hybrid drive that can give you 2Tb plus a boost in files you use many times (such as the OS)

Mendyc158. Yes. I found some testing that agrees with what you said. It does sound like a hybrid drive would be the way to go. It looks like the ps4 has some issues with drives larger than 2tb with some games.

Your best choice is a 1TB or higher solid state drive is the option I choose because they run faster and longer than hard disc drives. Try that suggestion, lad.
