Please note: Prices and availability of SSDs change. I suggested a Samsung QVO in this video, but right now the Crucial MX500 is a much better buy, as it's virtually the same cost as the BX or QVO, but a much better drive. Take my discussion of SSDs in this video more as advice on the type and form factor of drive to look for, rather than a specific model.

here in canada the Xbox series s ... is 599.99 new befor taxes so approximately 725$ after taxes !!!! and well theirs the issue with all consoles and thats thermal throttling and you only get 120FPS tops ......i could get a budget too mid range computer that gets better FPS .. funny the Xbox series X and S are relatively new too the markey and your already replacing a hard drive !!!! so i would question the quality of all its parts .... cheap PSU , cheap Harddrive , cheap integrated graphic's , Cheap underbined cpu from AMD 3.6GHZ on paper seems good but longivity i do not think is good at all .. better off getting a 3-4 year old gaming PC with quality parts around the same price !!!

wait why didnt you just plug the New SSD into you PC with the old xbox hard drive and open each drive window then select and drop all of the contents of the old hard drive into the new SSD so all his games and setting everything is on the new SSD its as easy as that and will copy it all even if its corrupt it will repair it ... but litterally this shows the quality aspect of the xbox series s and x it was released November 2020 !!!! its not even a year old ... i have a youtube /HTC movie PC with original hard drive thats from 2012 still running good today and i gave it a rough life lol with a Core 2 quad,8gb ram and gtx 960 LMAO its out of date but runing windows 10 and i use it for netflix and youtube in my bedroom and still runs fast and fine LMAO used a leaf blower on the deck too clear the dust out of it just this week LO

Well said Rusty, I work at Staples and its absolutely disgusting the things people will recycle that can be repurposed and repaired. 4-5 weeks ago a guy dropped of a GAMING PC with a 980 ti and an i7-8700k in it. I begged the company to let me have it, but no, it has been taken away to a recycling plant of which they declined to share with me where it was going. We live in a society that is full of greed and pollution and it's just sad. Electronics Recycling adds to the pollution problem, once they get sent to the plant and get melted down, it just puts toxins in the air.

At first I remember when I swapped the original Xbox one hard drive out with the regular hard drive and it took forever damn near to open it up. This one does seem to be similar, but it's very much easier and not to mention with me being an IT I'm waaaaaay smarter on how to open up electronics than I did back then. Definitely was wondering how we get the operating system on it after swapping it out with the SSD and glad that Microsoft actually has a method for this for off-line system update. Once again appreciate your time and thorough description on how to do this and I will be doing this within the next couple of days.

Good to see that both the PS4 & XB1 can be easily fixed/upgraded with a new HDD or SSD. I believe the 360 required a weird workaround, if you wanted a drive larger than their proprietary addon drives, it requiring copying of specific data from existing drive. So I never bothered trying to upgrade my 360 HDD, whereas I swapped my 80GB PS3 drive for a 320GB HDD. I did end up with a 320GB 360 drive though, as I got the Halo 4 360 in a trade in deal, that was weirdly generous for a GAME deal. Trading a 250GB slim with 1 controller + £100, it got you; the custom clear shell console, 2x custom controllers, 320GB HDD, Halo 4 on disc & fresh warranty.

Stock 360 consoles used whitelisted drives to prevent cheap 3rd party upgrades, but they're still standard 2.5" HDDs in more (phat 360) or less (slim 360) weird enclosures. Fairly easy to circumvent by getting a WD HDD up to 500GB and using "hddhackr 1.40" on your PC to make said WD HDD pretend being one of those whitelisted official drives which the console will then accept. Unfortunately 500GB is the upper limit because no official drive larger than that was ever released that the software could make the new drive pretend to be

Another great video. Performance increase with an SSD really depends on the game being played. Overall an SSD will improve loading time performance on average of 15 - 45 seconds, but bandwidth through the southbridge chip of the Xbox S is limited, so do not expect lighting fast improvements on all games as you would see on a PC for example. The bottle neck is the southbridge, not the SATA header. For reliability it is a no brainier to install an SSD.

Is the south bridge where the sata controller is? A ssd should also kill a hdd in iops as well. Running your os plus games from an ssd should net noticeable gains otherwise you could just use an external ssd.
@ConsoleTherapy
@ConsoleTherapy 4 жыл бұрын
@@saysbadman The southbridge is a support processor for the APU, basically it handles input and outputs to/from other components on the board (HDMI, WiFI, HDD etc). So even though the SATA and APU can handle higher bandwidth, the southbridge throttles throughput for certain I/Os to allow it to handle the multiple requests without crashing/overheating etc etc

Raw sequential bandwith isn't the problem with HDDs in the 8th console generation. The problem is in HDD's IOPS, seek time and the multiple small files that multiply the seek time. I was thinking for a long time now to change my HDD to SSD on my One S, made the change on my PS3 and PS4 many years ago cause they were extremely easier and didn't involve opening the device completely (i am extremely clumsy and useless when it comes to these delicate actions and i would never wanna damage my devices). Adamant here made it look very casual and made me wanna give it a go now that my primary XB device is a Series X. I have ordered an SSD an i'll try it tomorrow when i have what i need.

For everyone: Quick tip for hdds not ssds. If they stop being recognised, it can sometimes mean dirty contacts or slight discolouring of contacts between the boards and the hdd itself. Where contacts from the drive itself touch the board, use an eraser to go over the discoloured contacts. I had this recently and have had this a couple of times now. Just go over with a soft eraser till they are clean and then you just put it back together and you should be fine. You could use IPA but if you do not have one, and eraser will do so long as it is a soft one and will crumble a bit easier, you do not want too hard in case you damage the contacts. This does mean taking the hdd board off the hdd and cleaning but this does NOT mean the sata power or data contacts. The other contacts between the board and the hdd which is why I say, taking the board off the hdd. This may not be as well known. Provided there is no other issue like clicking and just that it is not being detected, your drive may actually be fine, just clean the contacts on the board to the drive itself which as contacts that are slightly springy, just becareful not to damage anything.

I think if you go with a drive less than 500GB or more than 2TB (Xbox compatible sizes) then you would have to make some changes not seen here because you need to trick the Xbox into thinking there's a compatible drive there but I wouldn't advise going above 2TB because there can be issues later down the line and less than 500GB is just pointless as there are predefined sizes for each partition so the last time I messed about with a 250GB for an Xbox the actual space for storage turned out to be in the region of 130GB but this was only as a project before I put a 4TB in there

QVO SSD I would only recommend for archiving purposes. They have small caches and are dram less cache. So once the internal cache is filled up it can depending on the controller run as slow as a mechanical hdd when writing or reading data. Imo if a client is running a SSD as a boot OS drive. Then I'll use a dram cache tlc drive instead. When the cache fills up there is not much of a penalty on write and read performance. Something to keep in mind.

So found your video to be helpful! But through my experience I learned that if a console is part of the "Xbox Preview Program," then none of this, including the OSU1 offline update will work, even with a new hard drive. I thought my Xbox One X had a bad hard drive since a recent update got caught in a fail/restart cycle. Replaced the hard drive with a new one, but same issue continued to happen and offline update would always instantly fail. Decided to test the old hard drive with SeaTools and both short and long generic tests passed on the old HHD. So started looking at other issues. Finally was able to determine that the offline update and/or scripts for a new hard drive will not work for a console on the Xbox Preview Program. To do so, the console must be removed (unenrolled) from the preview program and then offline update or even an online update will work. At least that is what worked for me.
@cezardob

How does one unenroll from the preview program if the drive is dead? If there's no network (dead drive and no operating system), then there's no way for the Xbox to communicate (or vice versa) with MS servers...?

@@cezardob You can unenroll from the preview program when logged in on any Xbox. My brother logged into my account on his Xbox, unenrolled my account and console from the preview program. That Crucial is actually a 480GB won't work on XBox One's. They require at least 500GB so you would have to go with a 512GB or higher for the drive to work in the XBox One's. Also you should have connected the new SSD to your PC and formatted it to NTFS before installing it into the XBox One S. Then when you boot it would have given you the option Option System Update straight away. FYI

you simplified this process for me. I thought my original Xbox One got bricked after an update. I figured it was the HDD, so I ordered a newer faster Seagate. I watched other videos with someone running script to mimic an original Xbox One HDD. It didn't work for me. Plus, I think I needed the newest OSU1 update file. Not sure which was the real problem with why the drive wasn't working. But I formated the HDD back to no partition and no labels, installed it, and then did the OSU1 update process and it worked beautifully. I thought I was going to have to trash it. I use it for the kids since I still have the Kinect games they like to play on it. Thanks for this, you don't know how much you've truly helped me and many others.

Yea I'm trying to talk more about pricing in order to open up conversation about that. Every now and then some one says I'm a rip-off merchant, but that's often because they haven't considered the costs involved or the fact that yes, I'm in business to make money. So I set my prices, and I try to be transparent about them, and people can make their choice as to where they'd get their stuff fixed. If they've found some kid working from his bedroom who will change their xbox drive for £20 labour, because he doesn't have rent to pay, then good for them, I've got no hard feelings toward that. However, the kid in his bedroom isn't insured, and likely his warranty is worthless. Make your choice.
