How to Upgrade WPL D12 Drivetrain inc. Bigger Motor Metal Gearbox Driveshaft Axel

So my view after upgrading the motor is that it definitely feels slower, but that the 370 motor likely requires a bigger (3S) battery. I'll be grabbing a new ESC and checking that out soon. What's your view?

i changed mine from 280 to a LaTrax 370, weak low end power, strong high end. it was like it was being powered by a turbo. definitely needs a better esc, battery doesnt need to be 3s i think. ive got a hobbywing 1060 on the way, we'll find out.

I was just going to swap mine out but as I use it for drifting I’ll keep It stock it’s quick enough. Definitely going to swap the axle and prop though, the stock one feels cheap and rattles so I had a look and no grease!

Do you have a preferred/trusted shop (or shops) for your upgrade parts? I just picked up a D12 here in Australia and AliExpress feels like a proverbial minefield....as usual.

Yes, if you google WPL Official Store you'll find it. Obviously more expensive than AliExpress, but if you're ordering a delicate part (especially replacement windows, body shells) you can be 100% sure they'll ship it perfectly packaged and it will arrive pristine. I still use AliExpress for many of the unofficial upgrades, but like you say, it's a roll of the dice.

Is the factory dif open?

Good question! The most basic set has a "locked" (or no diff) if I recall correctly, though it's been a long time since I've used stock, perhaps someone else can confirm. If you are getting the upgraded diff, there's a number of tutorials on installing and breaking in the gears (usually with a drill) I'd recommend you research and follow that guidance.

After my upgrades to metal parts, my D12 sound like a tank. Very loud engine sound and slower in speed.😅

Hahah yeah, upgrade to metal, need bigger motor. Bigger motor need bigger battery. Bigger battery need better Esc. Better Esc need better radio. And on and on :) then you begin to appreciate the original design haha

My 370 motor cuts out and the lights flash ... I can't figure out why either

Been a while since I messed with these, but usually that means your drawing too much power under load and so the battery gets too low, and low voltage protection kicks in and shuts you off. Cause? Gearing may be too tight, might need a better ESC or battery. I'd ask around in wpl forums, someone will know exact cause.
