Wow how did you keep the ball bearings from going all over like when I take my axles out. Good video keep them coming cheers

On the non-drive side there was a cap, and gravity helped on the drive side. :) Thanks!

Magnets! Well it sure as hell helped with the old style, damn there must of been about a hundred of those little tiny things!

Hi great helpful video! Only have one question: Shouldn't your wheel axle get wider to do this? Hasn't the whole wheel become slightly wider with the 8speed freehub? I want to do this too but am afraid it will be too wide for my frame.
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder2 жыл бұрын
Normally, yes but the old 7 speed hub had a lip at its base that the new hub didn't so I got really lucky.
@brians86072 жыл бұрын
Some of the old 7 speed cassette hubs are spaced for 135mm drop out width.

was any redishing required, did rim center the same
@wadelockhart945920 күн бұрын
Not a reply, but a question> What was the over locknut dimension of your hub? 130mm?
@ifffopfmn11 күн бұрын
If you need to increase the spacing from 130 to 135 yes you need to redish. If it's already 135 you're fine.
@dannyberndsen663 жыл бұрын
Nice video Jim! Did you have to redish the wheel because of the difference in length between the freehubs?
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder3 жыл бұрын
No. The total width is unchanged, just the new hub body doesn't have a "lip" at the bottom.

Hi Jim, what was the part number for the new free hub body you used? Great video
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder3 жыл бұрын
Hi! The one I used is fh-m760.

Did you have any issues centering the wheel on the bike? Adding a wider hub would offset the wheel further to one side.
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder2 ай бұрын
Nope, it fit like a glove.

Was there a spacer behind the hot body were they different which one did you choose to use?
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder2 ай бұрын
The old hub had a built in spacer. The new one did not.
@kingpey6663 жыл бұрын
Great video, did you need to re-dish the wheel?
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder3 жыл бұрын
Nope. The old hub had a built in spacer/lip which the new one lacks. That lets the 8-10 speed cassettes fit without any other mods.

Hi Jim thank you for the video. If I upgrade my freehub from 7 to 9 or 10 do I have to replace the levers as well on a mountain bike? Currently my rear cassette lever goes from 1 to 7. So how do I go into gear 9 or 10? Alfred
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder Жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, you will need to upgrade your shifters to accommodate the number of gears on your cassette. Also, most 7 speed cassettes (as opposed to freewheels) are on hubs designed for no more than 7 speeds, so check first.

hi, would you think i can do this with a Shimano Exage FH-HG50
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder3 жыл бұрын
Hi. I am not personally familiar with that model. If it is a conventional hub (seems likely with "HG" in the name) I would think it is a good bet.
@johntanchin25453 жыл бұрын
it's actually a vintage one which i got from the mid 90s. the FH and HG hoping they mean freehub and hyperglide. thank you for the response!

Is it possible to upgrade from 7 to 10? And what size of free hub is needed to upgrade to 10 speed? TIA
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder3 жыл бұрын
Hi. If you replace a 5/6/7 speed hub body with an 8/9/10 speed hub body, you can do so.

can i do this with acera x m290 free hub?
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder3 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with that specific model, but as long as the replacement hub shell is compatible I would imagine so.
@randomthoughts83463 жыл бұрын
hello what i need if i upgrade from 7 to speed ? shifter cogs chain rear (Rd) is that enough ? or plus rear hub axle?
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder3 жыл бұрын
If you have a freewheel you can screw on a new one with 8 or 9 speeds. If you have a free hub, you will need to replace the hub, or the whole wheel, and a cassette with the number of cogs you want, and a shifter. I either case you will need a rear derailleur and a chain sized for the number of speeds (8, 9, 10), and a shifter.

Where are the bearings (balls) in this video? It doesn't work.
@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the axle has standard cup and cone bearings. They were in good condition so I left them alone. The freehub has internal ball bearings. Since this one was brand new, I left it alone as well. :)
