In this video I will show you how to slowly upgrade your internal hard drive in your NAS to bigger capacity drives without losing any of your data or downtime however you need to always make sure you back up your data so you do not lose anything during this process in case you have one or more drive failures. #synology #harddrive #technology

what if the drive aren't bad, but you just wanted to upgrade the drive; would poping out one of the drive and replace it with the new one works?

Yes you can slowly do that one drive at a time but have to wait for the rebuild each time but yes you can do that and gain more storage:)

What if I want to replace 1 drive by a bigger drive and also copy old data into new drive? Also, is there a way to copy data from 1 drive to another drive?

what if I only have two bay Synology out of which one drive is crashed. Now I am planning to upgrade the storage with 2 new drives with higher capacity, how can I do that without losing the data?

first use a external hard drive backup your data asap and replace the bad drive with a bigger one then way for rebuild then replace 2nd drive after a couple of days

i'm assuming you cannot do this you know i've been told otherwise: 4 hard drives all linked together in raid 5 with 1parody and have one of those drives as hot swap AKA the parity hard drive. is basically also the hotswap drive

Ya, he totally missed on explaining that you need the Synology proprietary drive format. Also missed on saying how long it takes, or any limitations of how much free space the pool needs to be. Basically an excuse to make a video with really no help, and just available info.

Hello there. Thank you for your useful and instructive video. I'm in the process of upgrading my Synology 218+ with from 4TB to 10TB. I did the backup and replaced the 1st drive. I initiated the repair procedure and was surprised to see that the available space of the new drive is only 9.1TB. What gobbled up nearly 1 TB ? The original drive was a 4TB with 3.6 available, so in both cases 10 % of the capacity vanished.I wonder where these differences come from ? The drive are overrated by manufacturers to begin with ? Thank you in advance for your reply.
@GreyTechLive
@GreyTechLive Жыл бұрын
Hi thank you yes this happens to every hard drive because hard drive manufacturers calculate MB in 1000mb when it should be 1024mb as an example so that's why you see 9.1TB instead of the full 10TB

was this configured in SHR? and when "replacing" a drive, will the new drive retain the data from the old drive that is being replaced? Just being precautious of the error message at 2:18.

Hi I have a 916+ with 4 5TBs drives in SHR 2-drive fault tolerance configuration. All the bays are used up and no spare left. If I want to increase the storage pool, do I have to replace all 4 drives to a bigger capacity or I can just replace any number of drives to see an increase in the storage pool? Thank you.
@Grynjolf
@Grynjolf Жыл бұрын
With SHR-2 you'd need to replace 4 drives to see storage expansion (since 2 drives are redundant). With SHR-1 you'd only need to replace 2 drives.

How do you upgrade if you don't have a spare drive?
@GreyTechLive
@GreyTechLive 2 жыл бұрын
Need to replace each drive one at a time with a bigger drive and you have to wait for it to sink to the new drive when you put it in You can't just swap them both out and put new drive in just one at a time and make sure you have backups before you do it.

Say I have a DS1522+ filled with 5 x 14TB Exos HDD in SHR1 configuration. And say I want to replace all those drives with 20TB HDD's later on. Can't I just use one of the eSata ports in the back of the unit for cloning the drives? I don't have to have a free bay do I?
@Sasoon2006
@Sasoon2006 10 ай бұрын
You do not need to have one bay empty. SHR1 uses one drive for protection, so if you take any one drive out, everything still works (but now without protection). Now you put new bigger drive, instead of one you took out, go to Storage manager, your storage pool will now have status degraded (since one drive is missing), now select Repair of storage pool and select new drive to add it to storage pool. Process of repairing will probably take a long time. After it is finished, you can repeat process with second drive, and so on.

Man, you switched from 2TB EFRX drives to 4TB ... EFAX? How did the transition from CMR to SMR drives work for you?
@GreyTechLive
@GreyTechLive Жыл бұрын
hi yes one drive at a time and you can switch all your drives from 2TB to 4TB but one drive at a time. the raid array takes care of everything.
@Rammkopf
@Rammkopf Жыл бұрын
@@GreyTechLive Yep, the question was actually about the transition from CMR (the EFRX series) drives to SMR (the EFAX series). SMR drives are notoriously slow in RAID configurations, especially during RAID rebuilds in ZFS-based systems. That's why I was curious how it fares in a BTRFS array, as I've got a DS718+ and so far I've kept away from SMR drives out of fear that they're cr@p. I've already encountered SMR drives in laptops and AiO systems at a customer, and I know first-hand how terrible the experience can get in just a year of active use.

HELP!!!, So my case has 3 Hot Swappable Bays with three different SATA drives. I have been using these drives without issue in Windows 10 for 3 years now. Well I recently had a problem with my system that drove me to update My Motherboard and GPU as well Installing Windows 11 on a new M.2 Samsung 980 pro that is complete installed. When I did this WIN 11 install I removed the three HOT SWAP Bays with the Drives i was using for backups/Games and Files I wish to keep, so I do not want them to be FORMATTED OR ERASED. When I returned them in their Bays and rebooted my system they did not show up. I'm overly frustrated and not sure what I can do to return my drives and the Data not being lost. The Drives range from 4TB/2TB and 2TB bay drives. I hope a smart person can help out this Dumb old man. I would be most very relieved if someone can help me with this.

Hi do they show up in device manager and have you gone into bios to see if they are being detected? Also make sure power and data cables are plugged in and maybe power down to make sure they are all plugged in good, etc
