Very good instructions. I have an old DS216j and planning to migrate to a new DS233. This looks like a very good and simple steps to follow and I am going to use the combination of step 1 and 3 as suggested.

When migrating from a J to a + you won't be able to use the new features like BTRFS file system. I am in the process to move tones of data around and yes it takes patience, which I don't have too much 🙄🤔😳

Maybe just me, but I plan to change my DS918 in a year or two, but then I think my disks are about 5-6 years. I think it’s suitable to replace the disks by then. If I would run them in the new DS, they would end up probably about 10 years before next time I plan to replace the NAS.

You have a very valid point! In my case the disks are only a little under 2 years old so they should have plenty of life left in them.

I use an old DS213 with two 2TB WD red disks. It's now 10 years since I have this NAS and the disks. They still work fine, I had no issue, but I'm planning to upgrade to DS720+ , however not sure if it's a good idea to migrate the old drives, as they ran continuously for 10 years. Anyway great disks and great NAS!

10 years is a long time and even though they properly will work fine, I always change the disks after max 10 years.

Thanks for the video. Should be straightforward for me. I only have one drive (no raid) on my old Synology DS216play to my new DS720+. Should I migrate to DSM 7 before switching the drives? I'm still running DSM 6

Hi, Just a couple of questions on this subject: You mentioned that this was a migration from a DS215J to a newer DS, but fact is that the Synology assistant showed something different that was migrateable : a DS718+... That is a totally different NAS. Second: is this method usable for SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid), which I think most people actually use? Third: I am planning to first upgrade my DS214 Play from DSM 6.2 to DSM 7.11 in 3 steps, and than move them to the new DS224+. Looking forward to your reply! Cheers.

Thank you for your question 👍 Yes I was upgrading from the 215 to the 718+ the process however is the same. Im pretty sure you cannot upgrade your 214 to DSM 7.11 but you should be able to just move your hard drives to the new nas and it should detect and upgrade the file system for you automatically.

Hi, nice video! I actualy have DS718+ and thinking about migration to DS1621+. My question is how is it with the packages. Do you use Synology Photos? Was this working after update (I mean all face recognition data, notes in photos, tags, videos). I do not want to go through all my photos again as this would take forewer. Thanks a lot.

Yes I am using Syno photos and I was NOT able to migrate all the metadata... So I had to start over... Why do you want to upgrade?
Жыл бұрын
@@DigitalJediDk ohh that is disappointing... I will then wait for dsm 7.2 full system backup. Hope this will solve this I would like to use more drives. That is why. And ds923 is very disappointing system. There is no good alternative as i use NAS for everything (plex, docker with home assistant, virtual systems, photos, video edit)

@ have you considered the extension unit to have more disks? I will try to dog a bit deeper into the metadata stuff of Syno photos and let you know.
@DigitalJediDk
@DigitalJediDk Жыл бұрын
@ If you just move your current disks to a new synology unit, I am pretty sure the Syno photos metadata will remain intact.

@@DigitalJediDk was thinking about it but is not good idea to extend storage pool over the external and internal unit. Also regarding the price it os not good investment
