For a beginner i would suggest turning the tension spool knob all the way to maximum. This way, using your thumb isn't critical and you won't get any backlash.

But will it cast less far? Im new using bc, and im unable to cast far and always end up backlash even Im following the guide 😅
@anglermattoutdoors
@anglermattoutdoors 6 ай бұрын
@@CleosetricVlyers yea it won’t cast as far but it’s a good way to get the feel of it while not worrying about backlashes. If you set your brakes all the way up or close to it and get your spool tension up as well, you can start that way. I personally think you can get the feel of it pretty quick without doing that but it depends person to person. 👍🏼

Start off with heavier lures. Practicing casting a sinker is great. When you get into larger or more lightweight lures that are affected by wind, you have to have a very subtle touch and quick reactions. The sinker will take line out at a steady pace and a good way to start.

Ive been told. The spool tension needs to only be tight enough to keep the spill from moving side to side. Then it’s the magnet system. Magnet to slow the spool release. And something not mentioned here is you need to stop the spool from spinning just prior to lure hitting the water. Otherwise it’s not a nice ending. If the lure hits the water and you didn’t stop the spool you will have a mess. It’s a finesse thing for sure. Had my share of bird nests.

Great vide mate, thanks, been using baitcaster for 2 years now, and learned lots in these few minutes then I did over those 2 years, but can I ask you why Bass fishermen (the ones I follow on YT) never use lure clips, just cut line and re-tie instead and waste line, I fish in Europe, mainly for pike, perch and trout, and also we use wire or "floor" traces. Thanks again, will try your technique this Sunday, heavy, midi to light set up. Take care

Thanks for watching! As for the clips, I actually use them myself as well. A lot of guys here in the states think the clips are going to negatively affect the action of the lure. I’ve never had a problem with them myself. 👍🏼

@@anglermattoutdoors noobs 😂😂, thank you for quick reply. Enjoy your fishing/angling and now I'm subscribed, will be watching your videos. I fished in states only lake michigan on chatter boat, some fishing in gulf of Mexico, and Illinois river too, michigan lake trout, gulf baby grouper and grunts (after big storm) and Illinois river carp and something like a sea bass, but stripy, I think that's what you call perch. Can't wait for my next visit to do some Bass fishing and maybe some catfish in Illinois.

Thanks for video very useful as just got two light setups. ABU Black Max and Shimano Yasei 30g rod is one but I have no idea what strength braid to use. Will be fishing for Pike, Perch and Chub - UK based. Any advice? Thanks in advance

Does the reel tell you the line capacity? I believe 30 lbs braid would be best for that one. It’s strong and you can still cast far
@schsch73
@schsch73 7 ай бұрын
I loaded it with 50lb and think I've gone too strong. I soon got used to capacity of the reels when I tried changing the spool and it would not come out - over filled! The braid I used was just some Firebriad I have had for a while intend to try some dry land casting with a small lead first. The overhead cast tip was great I'd not have done it that way!@@anglermattoutdoors

@@schsch73 ok sounds good 👌🏼 not sure what exact size that reel would be but I do like 30 lbs braid for 150 and 200 sizes. Hope you get it sorted out.

im a complete beginner with baitcasters (wanted to try something new), so first days went as expected, me swearing the reel brand, seller and mostly brakes for backlashing all over the place... but as time went on i figured its not a brakes problem, its NOT BEING SMOOTH, if you yanking it back and forth spinning reel will forgive it, but baitcaster will give you a bad time... also, when first getting to water, crank those brakes up, im excited for a fishing, all hyped up i know i will go hard... after a few casts brakes are not that important, you can turn them down, and as long as you smoothly load up the rod with roll and release you can cast across the lake :) still... cant say i'm not getting backlashes, i still count myself as a beginner, but my point is i figured out that brakes are not as important as being smooth

Hi Matt I haven't used my baitcaster yet, I would like to ask what line would you recommend . I am not fishing for lunkers, we have medium size lakes and ponds here in Connecticut. My son got me an Abu Garcia rod and reel combo. Again I am just a beginner, I usually use a spinning outfit.

@anglermattoutdoors
@anglermattoutdoors 7 ай бұрын
I probably should’ve talked about that more. Just click it forward until you get it as tight as you’d like. I keep it pretty tight when catching bass. Also the baitcaster doesn’t need quite as much drag because of the spool design

Felix, using a bait caster reel, I felt the same way as you did at first but later on ...I felt worse. Lol I find it funny that everyone calls them bait caster, when nobody ever uses bait to fish with these reels. lol.
@willhoward9865
@willhoward9865 6 ай бұрын
Spool tension is just for side to side movement. Brakes and thumb are the key to the rest. Everyone says to tighten up spool tension but you are shortening your cast distance. Everyone has an opinion. Just relaying what I’ve been told. I’m not great myself but learning.
