Many black women have gotten away from using bristle brushes. We are the ones who NEED this type of brush since scalp oils can't easily travel down curly/coily hair. It also helps avoid scalp issues which we also NEED since we typically wash only 1x/week max. You don't have to do the water only method to do this. I know when I used bristle brushes back in the day the quality of my hair and scalp were so much better and I was just using it for styling. I'm going back to bristle brushing daily.

What I cant find answers on, is if you can use this with hair products? Since the brush is "meant to distribute your natural oils" won't using hair products get in the way of that? I find when I use this brush my hair is soft but feels dry internally. And I feel like if I use product, it will be counter productive since my natural oils can't coat my hairshaft with product on it. Also saw not to use it on wet or damp hair. So how often should you use it? And do you use it before or after moisturizing since it tends to make the hair feel dryer? It might just be my brush though. The one I have is soft and doesnt penetrate. I'm waiting on one that detangles as well as distributes oils. It's a nylon and boar combo.

@@HoneeyBee3 hello I’m no expert but maybe I could be of help? An amazing brush (while detailing in shower before wash) is the basic “wet” brush. After hair is washed and/or conditioned and DRY… if you don’t have enough oils built up on scalp yet, one thing I did was coat my hairbrush in olive oil, and put argon oil on my ends. I would gently detangle ends before thoroughly brushing section by section. Coated my strands SO WELL! A really good detangle and boar is “the hair edit” like $40 or less at ulta. I’d then finish off with a soft boar by “brush strokes” very cheap at Sally’s. I am so called “4c.”

@@geanieb3670 thank you so much!! I've never even heard of a wet brush lol so I appreciate it! I started noticing tiny broken hairs in my hands after using the boar brush and suspect it's because my hair shafts aren't well lubricated or conditioned, even with my own sebum, since it takes longer for curly hair to get full coverage. It did as I suspected, and I assume made my hair dry. So I will try adding a bit of olive oil when brushing!

I'm three weeks into water only and tried the BB brush for the first time this weekend.....OMG my hair was the softest I have ever felt it as a natural. Twisted and bantu'ed and it's still soft and smooth. It looks like it was blow dried . I did this yesterday and haven't done my rinse for today. Can't really tell about shine because my hair is very grey and I can't see the shine unless have oil on it and maybe in the sunlit. So far, I like doing water only but not sure I'm getting enough sebum coverage to continue without supplements. May try some of the natural things you talk about. Thanks for the videos explaining this process.

This is absolutely amazing. I never thought it was possible to be able to use a brush on our hair in it's natural state!!! Okay, so now how often in the week do you do this? After brushing what do u do with your hair, chunky twists/braids? After brushing so thoroughly I'd look forward to wetting it to see how it curls. I think I may go to Sally's to see if I can get a look at that big brush you use. I have a smaller one but I've been soooo scared to brush through my section like u show here. I fully understand the absolute need to detangle thoroughly first. Wow! I am absolutely amazed! Your shine is awesome! May I share ur part 1 and part 2 on my facebook page?

You need to deyangle at least once a week, then it will be easy to run your fingers through your hair, make sure your hair is moisturized and cleaned at least every 2 weeks the longer you wait, the hard it will get to detangle... Then... Use a boar brush, the hair will be smooth 😊 you will love them, apply your favorite leave-in... You won't miss taking care of your hair because you will see result... Gorgeous, smooth and growing hair 💝💝

Hi there! New subbie here! I would like to know if you're still using the BB brush weekly and if so, how much hair is in your brush after your sessions? I ask because I also have a cottony texture of fine hair, but my coils are tiny and the idea of brushing even stretched natural hair is kinda scary to me. But watching your video has brought back so many positive memories of how I brushed my relaxed hair with a soft BB brush years ago.
@Wateronlyhairwash
@Wateronlyhairwash 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Kxlot79, thanks for subbing! I haven't been using the BB brush weekly, I've used it about five times since the video, and I still love it. When I've used it, there is always minimal hair in the brush. I make sure that my hair is slightly damp before brushing, because I find that there is little to no breakage. I do however understand your reluctance to use it. If you really want to try it, I suggest adding your favorite butter or oil to your ends first, and make sure you thoroughly detangle your hair first. The oil/butter on the ends will also help prevent breakage, as well as brushing the ends first. Also choose your brush wisely, for hair like ours you're going to need a soft bristle brush. I hope this helps, and welcome to my channel:)

Hi Coily Mane. I am still rinsing about four days a week. I take two days off and brush on the seventh day. The boar bristle brush could absolutely decrease how often you water rinse. It really is a good addition to this method. Also I'll see what I can do about a close up of my hair. I'll try and use youtube's software, and see how that goes. So far, how do you feel about the water only method?

Hi! In the beginning the bristles do fall out, but that shouldn't continue to happen in large amounts, although a small amount of shedding is fine. Currently I have about ten bb brushes, some are duplicates (I'm obsessive). Here are all the names; Brush Strokes (Sally's Beauty Supply), Deville by Spornette (Amazon), Denman bb brush, no shedding at all! (Amazon), Beautique (Sally's Beauty Supply). Make sure there 100% boar. You can tell by smelling your brush after it's wet....trust! It's not a pretty scent!😣😣😣

If I'm wearing my hair in twists should I take them down each time I use a BB brush in order to distribute the sebum through out my hair?
@Wateronlyhairwash
@Wateronlyhairwash 9 жыл бұрын
Hi cocoabeanz2! If you're wearing your hair in twist you don't have to remove them in order to distribute the sebum. Rinsing daily or every so many days will melt your sebum down the twist. You can also use your hands to preen the sebum down your twist while rinsing and after your hair has dried. You should only use a BB brush on detangled hair.

@Wateronlyhairwash
@Wateronlyhairwash 9 жыл бұрын
Zaphir Adams Hi! One of the things I've learned while caring for my hair , is there is no "bad way" to care for your hair if it works. Brushing on dry hair if it doesn't hurt is fine, in my opinion....with that said, it is better when using a bb brush to brush on slightly damp hair so the cuticles will close, (locking in the moisture) resulting in shinier hair. My experience with the bb brush has been very positive when brushing on dry hair and damp hair. My preference though,is brushing on damp hair because the results are shinier hair.

What type hair do you have? It looks like a 4b.
@Wateronlyhairwash
@Wateronlyhairwash 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Gracegivenbygod Hair typing has always been a little confusing to me, so when asked about my hair type I always say it's primarily cottony in texture with silky smooth areas throughout. Now if you're asking about curl pattern/size, the sides and back of my head are 3c, and the rest I'd say is 4a in terms of curl size. In my hair journey video you can get a better idea of my hair type (size of curls and texture). I think people get confused with the typing method. Texture has nothing to do with curl size. You could have cottony textured hair with 3b curl type, or satiny/silky texture with 4a curl type. So the whole typing system is kind of flawed. When I first became natural, I cut my hair twice because I'd assumed that the large curls I had on the sides and back of my hair was some how not my natural hair. I figured my hair felt like cotton, so surely those curls couldn't belong to me, but as I continued to cut my hair, I realized the curls were still there....so the whole typing system is completely flawed in my opinion.
@TheLordsPrecious
@TheLordsPrecious 9 жыл бұрын
Wateronlyhairwash I agree about the typing system being flawed with how they group texture and curl size. Same thing with associating "clumping" to hair type. Among the curl diameters of 3a thru 4c, all have naturally clumping (more definition) or non-clumping (more frizz) groups - I've seen it. Every head of hair is different and the current typing system is just too limited.

@Wateronlyhairwash
@Wateronlyhairwash 8 жыл бұрын
Hi TashaFierce . I would say that my hair isn't thin, and it definitely isn't the thickest, but, it's what I would consider to be thick. However, it is also very fine. When people talk about fine hair I believe it is in reference to how thick your individual hair strands are, not how much hair is on ones head. My strands are very fine and tend to break easily in comparison to someone who has thicker hair strands, I just happen to have a lot of thin strands on my head, so it can be very misleading. I think this method could definitely work for you as well. Hope this helps.

This method is very hard for me to do. My scalp is itchy and hair is sooo dry. I'm need a hot oil treatment to bring my hair back to life again. Do you do a hot oil treatment?
@Wateronlyhairwash
@Wateronlyhairwash 10 жыл бұрын
Hi. I'm so sorry to hear you're having difficulty with this method. How long have you been doing this method, and have you done your daily rinses, massaging, preening, and scritching? What is the temperature of your water? Making your water too hot can cause an itchy scalp and dry hair. If the water is too hot, it can also strip you of your sebum. If you're not producing enough sebum, try tilting your head forward when you do your massages, and water rinses. As for hot oil treatments I've never tried them, but if you feel your hair needs it, then use it to put your hair on a healthy track. You could also try using banana baby food as a conditioner, it moisturizes and add a lot of shine, without striping your sebum (I've used this, and it's amazing!). I personally don't use oil on my hair, because in the past when I tried coconut oil on my ends, it felt like it striped my hair of it's sebum. So when ever I feel my hair needs extra moisture on the ends, I just use shea butter. This works for me. Hope this helps!

Hey Lauren. I haven't tried the nylon brush. I'm not sure if a nylon brush will absorb the excess sebum and debris though. The bb brush actually absorbs the oils which also helps in distributing the oils throughout.

Hi Koils Of A Libra! If the soft bb brush is too soft, I would suggest purchasing two bb brushes; one med , one hard to see which one works best. I doubt you'll need the hard bb brush though, it really is very hard. The soft bb brush is very useful for the ends of the hair (very gentle ), and for light touch ups (helps smooth out the frizz).

Hi isis4love. I haven't used the bbb in a quite a while. I've been allowing my hair to stay in it's natural state for the most part. However, I still have my bb brush and plan to use it when I feel like wearing my hair in a stretched state. When I was using the bbb, I used it 2-3 days a week. I also made sure to lightly dampen my hair before (no more then a light misting) brushing; this will help close your hair cuticles and leave your shiny.
