How to use a custom video background (mp4) in Microsoft Teams

A step-by-step tutorial on how to use your own video background in Microsoft Teams. No need to install any special apps or software except Teams itself.

As a pre-step, if you've never used teams video backgrounds before, you won't see the default video files and adding video won't work, even if you're using the names shown in this video. Make sure to pre-start a meeting and click on each video background option. That will copy the default video files to the backgrounds folder. At that point, you can perform the rest of the actions as specified and it works like a charm! I don't know why MS Won't let you add custom video backgrounds like you can regular backgrounds and hope they add this feature in the future. But for now, this is the way to to it! I've got a star wars battle scene (computer generated, not from the actual movies) as mine. It's fantastic!

This is not a good way. Better way for new teams is: 1. Place your mp4 file in "Uploads" 2. using powershell run the command "New-GUID" 3. rename the mp4 file to [created guid].jpg 4. create a thumbnail of the video, e.g. by creating a screenshot and save it as jpg 5. put the thumbnail also in this folder an name it [created guid]_thumb.jpg Now you will see your custom animated background also in the list
