Let's quickly look at using a small (4-40) threading die to thread truss rods on our miniature railroad bridge. Threading rods is simple, but you must follow a few basic rules.
Threading brass rods in small sizes is a useful skill when building miniature trains and structures. But also a useful skill for hundreds of other projects!

I use metal clothes hangers and 2-56 hardware. It's closer to the correct scale size, will rust realisticly outdoors, and clothes hangers, especially used ones are far cheaper than brass rod.

@@benhancock1408 I used brazing rods and lathe bar stock. The pack of 100 was $9.00. So 9 cents each. I like K and S but geeeez. The price!

I also pressed my die into an old junk socket and use a 3/8 square to 1/4" hex adapter and chuck that in my cordless drill to power thread them. Goes MUCH faster, but cutting oil is a must.

Hi Dale, I bought a wooden truss bridge when I got the track all for $100. It's flimsy for my layout, so I won't use it, but have it as a template for the metal ones I'll need to build since I get mighty strong dust devils that blow through my lot!! Any thing made of wood would be destroyed in one "OH NO" heartbeat!! To set those bridges onto the raised track work will be another challenge so that the winds can't rattle the bridges lose from the track!! Any suggestions, Dale?

Gee. Steel welded is always best. Tim Fitch in Saint George Utah has several that he had built by a guy. Expensive. But one of my locomotives weights almost 50 pounds!! So it’s gotta be strong! This guy is really really strong! No problems here! I’m hoping it weathers well. 😊🚀🚀🚂🚂

Excellent! Your degree is in Civil Engineering?😂 My late 2nd cousin was a bridge architect for Bechtel....he'd be amazed at the technologies used to make the mini-fittings and such. Well done!

@@ToyManTelevision Wow! Yes, the artistic qualities of civil engineers are just amazing....they have to see in their "mind's eye" what they wish to create, and then have the knowledge to actually "create" what they "see!" My grandfather was a CE from Cal, 1899. My late mother would always quiz him on how he managed since he was so terrible at math. His response always was that he'd have his Calculus textbook in his rear pocket, figuring that if he kept it there long enough it would "rub off on him." It did....he was a road builder his entire career. Curtis built a true two-story log cabin for himself and his wife, Hattie just East of the "downtown" of Woodland, Washington on the Southern shore of the Lewis River. The logs were debarked but not turned for consistency (as a peeler core would be turned). The chinking was a Portland Cement & Sand mix since the home was built long before the elastomers that are used, today. Best always to you and Karyn, Amigo from Venice, Florida nee Lafayette/Fremont/Saratoga CA🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃 ancestors.familysearch.org/en/KCR7-D3S/curtis-allen-gardner-1883-1970

@@charlesmcclure5994 yup. I was thinking about blacken it. Metal bluing. But the color is wrong. So I painted it with rust color. I’m planning a final black wash over that.
