I still have the stainless steel track offered way back when by Aristocraft. I have plenty. Sold a lot too. I have a much smaller road now. Fantastic outdoor durability and conductivity.

Good question! It’s hard and stays that way. Soaks up water and drys back out. Over and over. Pulls water away from the bench work. Works great.

Interesting ballast methods. They appear to fit the scale nicely. I once tried using gravel from roofing shingles that landed in the gutter to ballast my HO layout. The dust from that was a terrible insulator and the trains refused to run. I removed all of it and the trains ran fine after that. I've never tried ballasting since, but I'm ok with a more toy like appearance.

I use dirt on small scales! Well glued down. No dust. Great look for narrow gauge.

The idea to use that particular kitty litter for ballast is genius.

I’ve also used the Rustoleum camo earth brown on my dual gauge track…take the modules outside which makes short order and a whole lot better than air brushing or hand painting. Only difference in painting is, I spray everything, track, ties, turnouts, then come back and clean the track top with either bright boy, finger nail “yikes!” or a razor blade, which that almost never happens because the paint would be to thick! When it comes to purchasing the rattle cans, as you’ve said, it’s hard to come by, I still haven’t found any at my local stores…might need to go online and find some. Anyway thanks for sharing your techniques, whether I use the same techniques or not, it’s good to know….all great minds think alike 😊

Hi Ken. Yeah, I used to use bright boys all the time, but somebody put me onto something. And that’s that any abrasive even something is mild as a bright microscopic scratches in the rail if you can maintain a smooth surface, it doesn’t collect as much dirt. Dirt to anchor itself to the rail. At least that’s what I was told, so all I do is wipe off my track with a bit of mineral spirits. it works perfectly. I almost never clean my tracks outdoors. I’ve gone as long as two years without cleaning them! The only reason I wipe them down at all is because I put them by doing something like this, or if I get dirt on them or something. I think part of the key is having high-quality nickel silver like Llagas Creek uses. My old railroad was aluminum! What a nightmare. I had to clean it every time I went to use it. Fortunately, I had an LGBT Cleaning locomotive. Had a very abrasive wheel that went around and really cleaned the rail.

Another great video. I've used the poultry grit and also the Kitty. Litter for my o scale railroad with gargraves track. I started with Kitty litter somewhere around 1995 and around 99. Maybe 2000, I switched to the poultry grit, and trust me, once you glue down the Kitty litter. It is extremely hard to get it off again. I like the idea about leaving it loose. Especially outdoors where you are. Thanks for another great video.

Thank you so much! I love building. I’ve always loved building more than running the trains or anything, but like everyone I was hell-bent on getting things done. Now I’m quite content to spend an entire week on one little thing. I get great joy.

I really appreciate your video’s. I had a loop for my live steam locomotives at my old house on the ground. My new house I want an elevated railroad minimum 3’ off the ground. I am not getting any younger. Your layout style would work great with live steam.

That looks great! Perfect timing on this video - I ordered about 42ft of Llagas Creek nickel silver code 250 track a few weeks ago and I will definitely be spraying the track exactly like you did. Thanks! I'm gonna try ballasting with roofing granules. See what happens...

Mineral spirits is actually an insulator, all oils are. The nice thing is that it evaporates well, so there is nothing left after you have used it, unlike a lot of soap containing products which assume you rinse it all away afterwards.

Check out Peace River gravel from Super Naturals. This is a nice mini stone that you can also use. A nice natural color blend that is not dyed. Just like it came out of a quarry. I think that also would be great for the track. Amazon has it also as well as an aquarium shop. Just another thought to help with the layout for you.
