Master craftsmen, Andy Maschke has made me several useful tools that I personally use daily. One of them is a German Martingale. Watch how I explain when and how to use one on my 2 yr. old, Maggie.

Dear Matt, Thanks for your explanation, I already wondered in the previous video, what is it all about dangling, all that thin extra rope. Now I get it, the German gentleman has thought about it a lot indeed, when I hear what it is for, cleverly devised and a good accessory for the rider. Have a nice day, thank you so much. Roos 🙋🏻‍♀️👍🏻💪🏻🤗

Thank you for doing this video on the German martingale. It’s one of my favorite training aids, but so few people understand what it is. I appreciate how the release is so much faster than my hands can react. Hopefully, after your explanation, more will understand what it is I’m using on their young horses

I agree with you exactly. The release is in response to what the horse does himself, and your hands can remain quiet. Some do not understand and there are some that are against any training aid. That is fine for them.

We have the same reins for english they are called Thiedemann rein

The same thing can be achieved with Vienna reins, which allow the horse to learn to look for the release themselves, instead of being forced into the frame. I start in the round pen with a surcingle first, though.....

funny fact: in Germany we do not have this There is a similar device, quite popular decades ago but today nearly banned. The real Martingal still used today just avoids that the rider looses control, when the horse pulls the head too high. It has no clips it has rings through which the reigns are going. Mainly used by jumpers and outside on the trail.

What would you choose: a sliding/running martingale or a german martingale? And since I'm here, would you do a video on how to ride with Romal reins? Thanks.

I can do that romal Video! Depends on what you’re trying to accomplish or feel as to which martingale to use

As a question coming from a dressage/ HJ rider: Does this cause the horse to brace against the reins as it sometimes does in the disciplines I practice? Usually not a problem for someone in a professional training environment, however would the issue be a possibility in less educated / someone not in a regular program?

@@malin_2209 We call them German Martingales in the United States. The United States does a lot of things backwards. So yes where you are from they might be called something different. But in the USA that is what we call them. When you look them up on any website from United States that’s what they’re called as well.

Properly used it is a fine training aid. I like it as it can be adjusted so that the horse only touches the restraint if he places his head incorrectly. He should be properly trained leading up to this so that he is ready for its use.

@@mattmillsreining1 I have been working with horses over 50 years, based on my experience this is a gimmick. It is a tool in your case that is used harshly. Your type of riding no matter the conformation of the horse, is over and over very hard for the horse to see correctly, causes intense pain on the poll and causes intense headaches. Eventually permanent damage to the spine, causing kissing spine, arthritis and lameness. We all have choices to make, my choice is to acquire a certain headset naturally with patience and time. Thank you for being respectful.

Used to call those things Market Harboroughs, I've always thought them quite severe to be used on difficult horses, looks like they are now used as a training aid
