Thank you for that great tutorial, it was very clear. Question. Could I determine the alcohol level with any liquid using this method? I need to work out the alcohol content of JUN Kombucha when fermenting and after?

Excellent video. Clear, concise and to the point. Very, very helpful. I have a question, if I may? I am concerned about oxidisation of my must when I take a reading with the hydrometer. By removing the air lock and placing the hydrometer in the must, is this not opening the 'oxidisation door'?

so does racking and bottling. As long as you dont let it sit open to the air for several hours you will be fine.

After off and on wine making for 20 years I've never thought of using a hydrometer till now. I'm using a dady yeast and I understand that fermentation slows after about 22 % ABV So for different fruits I may need to adjust my sugars content to keep my high content of Etol at a constant level. thanks..

what should be the S.G. be in the wine for a 75cl champagne bottle prior to corking to make a homemade champagne. I usually prime a bottle with 2 teaspoons of sugar. But I had some wine left over from a gallon demi-john and I have put it in a champagne bottle the S.G. is 1000, is this to high and is it dangerous to bottle with that S.G. hope you can help. P.S. I miss your shop in Liverpool. kind regards jimmy jones

so after you take your first gravity reading of the unfermented wort, when do you take your second reading to get the specific gravity for the measurement of ABV? ta

What would the ideal measurements for cider be?

Does anyone know Why DOESNT the hydrometer used for liquor have a scale for specific gravity? I cant find a hydrometer used for liquor NOT beer or wine with the scale.

hi, im a newbie to wine making. on the direction of someone who had previously made wine I started a batch (added juice from elderberries, water sugar and yeast). I didn't know anything about a hydrometer when we started it so I never took a beginning reading. it has been sitting for 4 months now and I don't ever remember seeing it bubble or perk out of the airlock. the current hydrometer reading is 1.002. should I add more yeast, to restart the process? should I scrap it? Im not sure what to do.

I wish I'd watched this before I started - I didn't take any reading before fermentation :( but thank you for the video!

Actually the hydrometer is a useful (primarily diagnostic) tool for beer brewers, it's definitely not essential! With beer it's rare to bother with an initial reading. A final reading would normally only be taken if clear indication of complete fermentation was not available; for example the bubbler had stooped after an unexpectedly short time. I always rely firstly on taste & the degree to which the bubbler is active. Wine making may call for more rigorous use of the hydrometer. Thanks

Should of used a clear bottle...your vids are good tho👍🏻

He got that the wrong way around .. you take the final gravity away from the original gravity
