Yeah how people are sheep and follow bad leaders. TLH is the best. I loved it.

I love this! "You find yourself a seat...not too far in the front and not too far in the back." The Lutheran formula of how to find your perfect pew =)

I grew up Roman Catholic in the 1960s, so I used the People's Mass Book, which had a hymnal section. But, like a lot of young Roman Catholics, I left that Church in my late teens, first for a Fundamentalist Baptist Church, and later for Charismania. Alas, after reading Reformed Creeds and the Book of Concord, I found confessional Lutheranism to be the most Biblical, as far as I can see. So, I use a hymnal. Although I like and have the Lutheran Service Book, I prefer the Lutheran Hymnal 1941, though I still use the Treasury of Daily Prayer along with it, even if it was designed to be used with LSB. I Your videos are great.

Walking into my first Lutheran service, the opening was the perfect reenactment of said experience. Even my rather old Presbyterian church I was attending for a while had screens lol.

The 1941 hymnal (TLH) is what I grew up using. Memories ..... "Page 5" and "Page 15" ...

Fellow Lutheran here, though the parish I'm a member of is part of the Wisconsin Synod. Our old hymnal was basically formatted identically to the one in the video and was also a nice red color. We're in the middle of transitioning to the new hymnal now (nothing has changed in terms of format). Had a big smile on my face the whole video because how familiar I am with the way hymnals are used. It was interesting bringing my now-wife to church for the first time, she basically just stared at my hymnal pages the whole time since it was probably the first time ever seeing a service guide like that!

As a rule of thumb, sing each and every stanza. The Lutheran Church is the Singing Church. Sing out with a shout!

At first I thought, what is this? Why do I want to watch a hymnal tutorial. And then, after I did, I think; I want a hymnal! As always it’s awesome! Thank you

Many LCMS Churches are not using screens with bands in the front. I left one of those churches to return to a more liturgical LCMS church. I missed the liturgy.

Sang a hymn last Sunday, Speak, O Lord, Your Servant Listens. It had words that I wanted to remember. Got out my old RED Lutheran Hymnal and was reminded of just how much is in there! Our church has newer hymnals, Service Book, collecting dust as we use the screens. I dont like the screens. There is something about holding the book and having to concentrate on the service that reading off a screen doesnt provide. YEP, sounds old school. Makes me a bit sad that we will lose all that wonderful information abut the hymns history.

You probably don't sing many hymns from the LSB either --- I suspect weak theological 'Jesus is my boyfriend' songs.

I couldn’t have done this better! I absolutely love using the service book/hymnal, received one when I was confirmed, long enough ago for German or Swedish! This message I loved, and I hate screens!

Thank you!! Also, the LSB has wonderful prayers on the very first page to help set your mind and heart in order for and during worship. My favorite are the Holy Communion prayers.

The Lutheran Hymnal is unquestionably one of the greatest hymnals of the LCMS =)
@johnhouchins3156 Жыл бұрын
@@JeffWindoloski The TLH was a corroberation of many confessional Synods. I know the LCMS used it, the WELS used it, the ELS used it, and MANY, many independent Lutheran congregations used it. It just may well have been the last thing we Lutherans agreed on.😐 It's still in use in some churches of all the forementioned synods. If your congregation switched to the new hymnal, chances are good that you can get a copy of TLH simply for the asking. I know our congregation happily gives them away. It's still very sefl and I'd enourage all Lutheran homes to have one.

“Not too far towards the front, not all the way in the back” That is precisely where we landed the first time we visited an LCMS church. About 3/4 of the way back, but on the left side! We just use the Service Book at Saint Paul’s in Parkersburg, WV. I did pick up the red hymnal for personal use.

This is very helpful! I've never been to a Lutheran church, but am looking forward to attending one this Sunday. Reading sheet music is not new to me, but while watching their online service, I noticed that there is a lot of interaction between the congregation and the Pastor. My first thought was, "How do they know what to say!?" Welp. Now I know!

Even though I’m a pastor in a non denominational church, I remember my Lutheran roots! The most beautiful songs ever written are in those books! Hillsong and the like can’t hold a candle to those eloquent hymns! You will learn the Word from them!

Thank you Pastor Wolfmueller. Whenever Non-Lutherans visit a Lutheran Church for worship, they can get lost with the hymnal. I think the layout of the LSB makes it a little easier.

Very good and simple tutorial of the hymnbook. Thank you for introducing to your viewers TLH. However, I was wondering why your church doesn't have screens? Screens are good! When the doors and windows are open allowing for a small but gentle breeze to enter through, they keep bugs from entering your dwelling place. (smile)

Also to note, many churches print a bulletin and a a few large print liturgies. The bulletin will have a condensed version of the order of service with any specific prayer of the day, etc... that are said along with a general order of things. They may also print a few copies of the liturgy in large print for the people who have difficulty seeing. These can be in short supply. These will also have all of the prayers, etc... that are normally listed in the bulletin plus the hymns and make it easy for a newcomer to follow along. Pastor please take a minute to explain why we may have more than one Hymnal. The Church I belong to in Washington, PA has Three! An older red hymnal similar to the one you showed , a green hymnal, and a newer cranberry hymnal. Also note that our Church was an ELCA church, but has since changed our affiliation to the NALC. Thanks for your videos, even as a lifelong Lutheran, they are very helpful.
@johnhouchins31563 жыл бұрын
What's contained in the worship folder will vary from congregation to congregation. Some print the whole service for the ease and convenience, and some are just what you called it, a bulletin with news and calendars for the upcoming week.

Wish we used the hymnal more, NOT SCREENS! And I wish it were THE Lutheran Hymnal, not LW or LSB interlopers (yeah, I'm old school) Screens blocks the view of beautiful stained glass windows 1st of all. Sadly the "coronaphobes" have removed all the hymnals from the pews. When the pastor shows up in skinny jeans, it will be time to leave.

@cateclism3164 жыл бұрын
Yes. I do see that occasionally.
@johnhouchins31563 жыл бұрын
Very much so. And they were shared with the WELS and also the ELS, and I'm sure some others. Every once in a while, we'll go with page 5 or 15 for our liturgy even today. For many congregations, switching to the new hymnal was traumatic!
