As someone who currently has a mandolin scab healing, I'm glad I found this.

My neighbor had a terrible Mandolin accident where he lost his arm. Just kidding, but seriously, be careful. Fingertips taste awful in salads.

I could lie to myself, and say, oh, I will always be very careful, but I just know my luck, with sharp things, and I'm going to buy a pair of cut gloves!

I started using a glove a few years ago, and now it’s just a habit, like a seat belt. Crazy not to.

Thank you sooooo much for your video! I was researching mandolines and felt really overwhelmed, but you summed it all up so nicely. Great authenticity and genuine trustworthy perspective coming through.

I've had my mandolin for I don't know how many years..... My dumb behind didn't even realize what all the different blades I have were! This video was super duper informational! I'm pulling it out and getting busy today LOL

Having suffered ten years ago a seriously deep cut on the meaty part of my hand at the base of my thumb that required a visit to A&E (or ER as it's known across the pond) and about 12 stitches, I am finally ready to step back into the water and buy a mandoline again. So I really needed to watch some safety tips! I think I'll always use a safety glove, just to avoid ... y'know.

Thanks for the tips, Adam. I don't have a mandoline instead I have an old-fashioned box grater. The safety gloves are a great idea for me. I always nail my knuckles on that thing.

i have a box grater with a mandolin too! but that's actually for slicing cheese in little rectangle slices

Yep. I bought gloves the morning after I grated nutmeg and a finger with my box grater.😒

I volunteered at a summer and retreat camping place for multiple years as a prep-cook. I got a 'professional mandolin' because I saw its usefulness, but I didn't realize at the time that mandolins aren't all the same! Mine wasn't a straight blade; it's serrated. I hate serrated-blade mandolins. It's metal, not plastic. It has a few blades, and I absolutely hate it! I do love the cutting gloves - mine came individually, and I highly recommend them!

I'm...really shocked you never once mentioned the guard. They come with a guard for a reason, and despite chefs scoffing at them, they are fantastic for not cutting yourself.

Im trying to decide whether to get the bigger one. I get that i can do bigger veggies, duh, but is the smaller benriner sufficient for most of it? Or is the bigger one easier for smaller stuff for some reason? Or is the bigger one way more cumbersome than its worth?

I have a French mandolin and it's really heavy. He's also right about the accidental slicing of your fingers!!😢

Did you ever use your french style mandoline to cut julienne out of raw celery (root) and carrots? I used the hand guard and Igot a bunch of julienne out of it but there was a lot of stuff that was not utilized and it took me a whole lot of force to go through. Any hints on what I might be doing wrong?

Am I going crazy or haven't I seen mandolins that have a small "device" you can use to hold food for you? Some kind of small press with a handle with some kind of non-slip coating on it. Are those any good?
@danielsegredo44913 жыл бұрын
The one I have came with it, but it works fairly bulky. Good for larger pieces of whatever you're trying to slice, something like potatoes.

To be fair, even a sharp peeler is equally dangerous if not dealt with care. Used OXO Grip Peeler and nearly lost the tip of my finger.

Mandolins are so scary, i chopped off 7mm of my pinky and i didnt even felt it. I stopped because of the blood, not the pain. Threw it in the garbage the same night, 10 years with a knife and never had a nick, and my first time with a mandolin im missing pinky flesh 😅😅 i will buy a high quality one and be SUPER careful, time to try again !

I avoid them altogether and just use adjustable disc on food processor.
