Hi Alison. Despite you posting this metronome video in 2012 I came across it today and it was really helpful. I play the Low D whistle - so very different to what you play - but your video was still very useful, especially as I play by ear. There was one particular difficult part of a tune I was trying to get my head around and your video explained why the metronome was so important for those difficult parts. Lots of doublings etc in this tune I've learnt and no music sheet or timing to see them! So, thank you for posting such an informative and helpful video. My classic type metronome is now on it's way! Slàinte! 🙂

yes, if i understand what you are saying correctly. If the music says for example - 64 crotchets, then set the dial to 64 and it will be the equivalent to playing 64 crotchet notes in 1 minute, or you will have played 128 crotchet notes in 2 minutes etc... If you want to metronome to beat faster-as in twice the beat, then set the dial to 128 but play at the same speed and it will just tick more frequently.

thats an easy one, you could just take it back a few bars and continue on, or if thats no good, then it means that that particular passage is too difficult at the moment to playing time, and so one would go over and over that bar to perfect before adding back in with the metronome. The metronome is a good way of highlighting parts that are weak. Does that answer the question?

Depending on what metronome you have, why don you just set the ticks to a pace you like? Im not that keen on digital ones as they are really confusing and the pulse is always on the first beat so you need to set the time signature and end up confused as you are (i dont mean that rudely) So, if you have just a pendulum type one or a digital that just ticks, then set the speed to one you like.

I am a Latin percussionist and I play a little blues and boogie woogie piano, so I found this video super interesting and one can never learn too much, right? The metronome is great for keeping my rhythm and timing when playing congas. It's easy for one to lose themselves, especially during a solo, metronomes help hone this skill. Even today, I still use a metronome when playing at home. Plus, I hope you don't mind me saying so, but you're also pretty easy on the eyes, which makes it hard to move to the next video. Sorry, that was the Latin percussionist side of me speaking! 😉... 😞

Thank you for being explicit!You are correct about the artist's instrument overwhelming the "electronic" metronome.The oldie (wind-up metronome) seems to be more practical... at least for me.The instrument is a Pedal Steel Guitar 3/4 (3 floor pedals & 4 knee levers).After frustrating numerous instructors...due to being too slow (consistently)... I decided to obtain an electronic metronome. It's quite confusing. But I hava lotta stick-to-it-tiveness. I will prevail.Your instructions are being incorporate into Pedal Steel Guitar lessons.Thank you, once again.Howard

Ive tried a few android versions of metronomes and some of them seem to jerk just after they sound the beat which is very offputting because it needs to be smooth?

there isnt a 'fix all' answer im afraid, but just try to stay in time as much as you can with the metronome ticks. It will get better as you get better at the music and you will get there. You shouldn't pick up too many bad habits if you play to a metronome....

You made a few valid comments on this video and that was good. You look very relaxed. You did not mention though that some metronomes have a bell and how useful that can be. Maybe your digital piano has one and you could have demonstrated that? Using an online metronome or an App can be useful to some people if they are accessible whilst playing. You play with your hair a bit too much. I found your videos through comments on the AB forum. I'll certainly watch a few other videos you have made.

What i love about your videos, is that you talk about little things that i never see anyone else talk about! Awesome stuff! I do have a question regarding metronome usage. Lets say for example that i'm in the middle of a song and some of the notes throw me off and i lose a sense of time of where i was, how would you approach that issue with a student, but trying to keep the concept of "not stopping" when you lose your sense of where you are at unexpectedly? I hope that makes sense lol

I just like the sound of the pendulum metronome. I find it very relaxing. Maybe I should consider getting a pendulum (grandfather) clock instead of a metronome.......

+The Online Piano and Violin Tutor - my first time catching you on KZbin. You are a good teacher! I was researching metronomes and saw one like your traditional mechanical one. I want one like that (wooden, traditional). It had a bell that could be set to ding in a few different ways, i.e. each beat, every 4th, etc. The bell only had one note though (maybe a B?). I like bells and chiming sounds, but wouldn't that sound a little weird if it weren't in tune to the music? I don't know - Is there an all purpose note that goes with everything?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 10 жыл бұрын
No, it wont sound weird at all. It would be weirder if it had a tone as then it would most likely clash with what you are playing all time and would be incredibly irritating and off-putting.

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry, I still don't understand how a bell cannot have a specific tone. I must be pitch/tone challenged. I am definitely hearing the bell ring a B note/tone on the demo video of a metronome with a bell. Doesn't each note have its own tone? do re mi fa so la ti I am hearing "ti" (a drink with jam and bread =))

HI, Im not sure what you are asking here? Are you asking me what to set the speed to for a song?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 12 жыл бұрын
it doesnt matter where the 'tick' comes from as long as you can hear one and its in time.

Very well rxplained thanks. I am working on a chopin piece with a dotted half note equal to 50. I want be able to hear the 8th notes. The sugnature is 3/4. What speed should then put the metronome to?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor

Just increase the speed to one that you are happy with and go from there.

Thank you for your video, I am learning my scales and it has requested that I play them at a speed of (Minim = 88) I am not familiar with this timing at all.. Is it asking me to play twice the speed of a: (crochet note = 88), therefore putting my metronome at (Crochet = 176 bpm) ??

Sorry forgot to say.Often in lessons the teacher will put music in front.t of me that's too difficult.There's no chance Im goi.g to get through it just sightreading first time round.Just recently I decided I ought to put my Instrument down , turn on the metronome and talk myself through the rhythm and only when I can do this accurarely can I go back to the instrument.If i dont do this it means I might be just learning it wrongly so I then have to unlearn it before I can learn it accurately.

I understand that using a metronome is a great practicing tool, but how long does it take to develop an internal metronome? I wouldn't want to get rid of my metronome, but I don't want to become too reliant on it.

+Alastair Leeuwangh I find using a metronome priceless. Especially when learning faster pieces. Starting off at a speed you can comfortably manage and then increasing one step at a time. Another way to develop the "internal" metronome is playing with other people. In ensemble you HAVE TO keep time.

A metronome is a metronome. As long as it’s accurate and you can clearly hear it.

Well if you have one that alters the time signature, then set it to the same time sig as the piece in question and the pulse will be on the 1st beat of every bar. For 6/8 say, you will get only 2 ticks - or the music rather will tell you say 100 = dotted crotchet. The 1st tick will be for the first 3 quavers and the second tick for the second 3 quavers. If you want it to tick per quaver then you have to triple the speed.

Very well explained indeed! It's crazy how you can go the same speed with different beats... I don't understand that yet -- I'm sure I will soon....by playing around with it.
