Sipsy River ... what memories. When I was probably 8 yrs old (1/2 century ago) my Dad, his uncle and my brother made a float trip down it in a flat bottomed boat. Dad actually grew up in the area. Man ... great run across this video. Thanks for sharing!

Good one. I like your low-key style which is totally free of the expansive brashness that seems to typify many of our American friends, especially the "news" presenters. I've not heard of Millbank Bags, but will look out for one. Thanks for the information. Col, NZ.

Thank you sir. Please remember that the American government has left the American people behind. The two are not synonymous. Our country has been hijacked by a variety of interests from Wall Street to the Military Industrial Complex. The American people have always volunteered to fight and help others, but we have grown tired of being lied to and manipulated by our leaders. Enough politics. One trend I have noticed is that Americans tend to place their faith in technology and expensive gear, while the ANZACS fall back on traditional bushcraft skills. I really like the Millbank bags as they are low tech, reliable, simple devices. I'd love to have a Swanndri bush shirt. I'd love to visit your country one day. Have a good day and thank you for watching.

The Meat Trapper Haha! You need only peruse the enterprisemission website to find out about lies and cover-ups in high places! I have a "Swannie" bush shirt these last 12 years and it's in all but new condition, being well made and durable. If you ever get the chance to own one, their 3XS size equates to a Chinese 5XS. I'm quite fat, and I can wear a conventional shirt and jersey under the Swandri, and it's not too tight. But I need 5 or 6X Chinese overshirts to be similarly comfortable. We live in the Bay of Islands, a few degrees warmer in winter than most of the rest of the country.

Great idea on the bag I could make that pretty easy if I could find me some good canvas. Nice area as well. Jason

I like prefiltering through a paper coffee filter. A clean sand filter will take out bad flavors (iron water, or sulfur). Charcoal will remove heavy metals and most farm chemicals in the groundwater. But you still have to boil out the micro bugs.

Cool stuff my friend. The more I see of your area the more I want to head south in the winter. I went to check on my cabin today and had to wear snowshoes. Shoot me... shoot me now ha ha. Aren't there rattle snakes and crap like that under those ledges? That stuff freaks me out cause I've never lived in an area where we had to worry about stuff like that.

No problem - Come on down. We'll stay South for the winter and head North for the summer. It sucks down here when it hit's a hundred degrees and 90% humidity. The snakes stay up in the pines it seems, not so much in those rocky creeks. I was deer hunting last year and killed this cane break rattler with a stick. He was 12 rattles and a button - which is HUGE for a cane break. Check out the video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn6VgX-bfb9qrJo. Here's a small clip of me peeling him before he hit the grill: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3uygmydrb6SfqM .

I really enjoyed this video, thank you. I've never heard of one of those filter bags but a great low tech idea. Take care!!

Thank you for the video. Do you think it would work just as well if you add some charcoal to the bottom to filter any chemicals? Looking at ways to make one more versatile for a given environment
@Meattrapper10 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting idea. I've never tried using charcoal so I don't know. I think the key would be making sure it did not slow the drip rate as it is slow to begin with.

Interesting, my friend! When I was young, I'm 62 now, I grew up in Wyoming right at the northern edge of the Red Desert and most of us used canvas water bags that were tied to the radiator struts or some part of the pick-up. Fill it up with tap water before you leave and when you're thirsty you just drink from the corked/uncorked mouth and you got a cool drink. The idea being, evaporative cooling We had no need to filter the water but it's the same principle. These water bags are still available many places and the canvas was TIGHT as it would do no good if, when you were thirsty, it was all gone! I think out military surplus stores still frequently have linen/canvas water bags for filtration. At least, I got about a dozen of them from Sportsman's Guide a couple of years ago.

That was good advice I ordered a millbank bag off of ebay

Awesome - that is great to hear! Remember when it's new you have to break it in good. They start off like a bucket - no drip at all. Tossing it in the washing machine with no detergent works good, or just hand wringing in water a lot. Also you can wring with pebbles in your hand to soften up the canvas. They flow faster with age. Good luck - they will last a lifetime.

I've also been inspired to work on getting a license so I can do some meat trapping too. You're right the food prices keep going up and up. Is beaver the best to start with?
@Meattrapper10 жыл бұрын
mharm734 I think beaver is some of the best eating out there - much better than most store bought beef. Of course, I live in an area where we are overrun with beaver. In Alabama there is no limit, no closed season and no license necessary to trap beaver. As a general rule, vegetarian animals are great eating - beaver, deer, cows, rabbits, squirrels, etc. Next come omnivores like coon and lastly carnivores. Some carnivores are great eating like bobcat - and some are inedible - like otter. Don't forget turtle trapping - I will be doing a lot of turtle videos this summer.

really interesting...I use to drink a lot off water out of creeks when I was trout fishing as a kid...I have no idea how I never got sick...I had a friend almost die though...The water he drank, the Dr.'s figure there was a dead animal up the creek because of the sickness he had...

As a good video that was very neat I'll be looking to try to purchase me one. I do have a question about the chemical purification I guess that will take care of giardia and these other microorganisms especially if you're drinking from a stream maybe a beaver dam is above you or something where you what they called beaver fever I guess that will take care of the biggest part of the things that could hurt you I appreciate your response back on this information it is a bit new to me but I am interested Darren Huffman from the Ozarks

This bag does NOT purify the water. It just removes the sediment. You still have to purify it.

They are hard to find? Well guess I’m a lucky yankee then! I intend to use it in conjunction with a Katadyn water filter or boil the living shit out of it. Chemical filtration can expire so I tend not to use it. The only reason I’m watching this is because I can barely get any water through so I wanted to fix that. You have helped immensely, thank you!

Thanks. I love your no-nonsense approach. I wasn't able to find a Millbank, so I made my own with #10 cotton duct, and show the results (and comparison with bandana & coffee filter) in a vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmHaaJKja5lsoJo
