This clearly explains compression very well- thanks! Especially since I have MG10XU that has some similar controls. My question is this, as more compression increases the gain on the microphone, do I compensate by turning the microphone gain down, or do I need to turn the channel level down (or doesn't it matter). Thanks again for the best review on compression I've found!

Shouldn't the dotted line(threshold) be on the x-axis? It shows how much Input (threshold) triggers a comp? Or am I misunderstanding something? No biggie, this is otherwise clear to me. Thanks!

It could actually be on either, but the textbook that I took this diagram from [White (2003) Basic Live Sound, p.86] has it as shown. I think it makes it easier to refer to the signal as being above or below the threshold, rather than to the left or right of it.

Hi Interesting!! I have my DBX 163X plugged through the effects loop of my xrc600c Pevey and when I move the master effects knob or the channel effects knob it does change the sound and the compression lights vary but I don't really know what I am doing ha ha ! Does a compressor need the effects loop to operate it ? And I can't make any sense of the level set knob! and the Hi Z input. Reading the manual does not really help! the one knob is like the slide knob on the 163x I guess.
@GLBProductions Жыл бұрын
Ah yes the old 163X! Outboard compressors like this are best used via an insert cable on one particular input channel, or inline between the mixer and the power amplifier. They are not designed to be run in an effects loop, although there are some studio applications for this - look up parallel compression if you're interested. The Hi-Z (High Impedance) input is for connecting a guitar or bass directly to the unit, so using it almost like an effects pedal.

@GLBProductions4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin you can actually leave it at +18dB as long as it is not causing any distortion at the mixer input. With it set there the receiver is handling all of the gain, so you can turn the gain control on your mixer all the way down to start with.

to add on the point around 7:20ish, there are upwards compressors that do make quiet sounds louder, increasing the gain of sound that is below the threshold. these sound great on drums in the studio, but would be completely unusable in a live situation, as they would cause feedback immediately.
@GLBProductions4 жыл бұрын
Yes I've seen them used in broadcast as well - I believe there they are referred to as levellers.
@famitory4 жыл бұрын
@@GLBProductions a broadcast leveler is more of a complete package usually, a gate/expander, upwards and downwards multiband compression, EQ, de-essing, exciter, and such, all set to a specific preset by the head of production and then locked to those setting for its lifetime of use. the aphex 2020 or the TC finalizer might be more studio-y examples of that sort of thing

Thank you for the clear and informative video. Is there a rule for use of compression? For example in EQ the best idea is less is more. Perhaps it wouldn't be needed at all for an acoustic duo vocals/guitar? And do you set the compression after setting all of the Gain, EQ, effects?
@GLBProductions7 жыл бұрын
That's a very good question. In live sound, I'd say that most sources benefit from some kind of compression, because the natural dynamic range of most instruments, and especially the human voice, is greater than can be comfortably handled by sound reinforcement systems. As such, virtually every mix sounds better with some kind of compression. Knowing how much to use therefore is the key, and this takes years to learn. Compression can be inserted at several points in the signal chain: most individual channels are compressed immediately after the initial gain stage using an insert point, but you can also have compression on subgroups and the main mix bus. Each of these is a topic in itself.

Can you turn phantom power for specific inputs in this mixer? I noticed that you're using a condenser microphone (which requires +48V) and a dynamic microphone (which doesn't require phantom power), wouldn't it damage dynamic microphones to have them plugged in to an input with +48V?
@GLBProductions2 жыл бұрын
No, phantom power is global on this mixer - all on or all off. Phantom power will not damage dynamic microphones with a balanced XLR output - just remember not to plug/unplug XLR cables while the phantom power is on.

So my question is, how much superior would using an external compressor be compared to the built-in one-knob compressor on a mixer? I'm debating buying a new Yamaha mixer (with one-knob compressor) or a slightly cheaper Mackie mixer along with a rackmount compressor.
@GLBProductions5 жыл бұрын
An external compressor will always give more control because it has separate knobs for the various compression adjustments like threshold, ratio etc. Whether or not that is superior depends on your needs and experience level - the one-knob compressor is quick and easy to set and does a surprisingly good job for what it is.

@GLBProductions4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome Clint. I suggest you do some research on the compressor in your particular mixer to see exactly what it is doing to your sound - then you'll be in a better position to decide where to set the knob. Also, set channel gain BEFORE applying compression - this gives the compressor the best possible signal to noise ratio to work with.

What will be the best level of compressor knob in yamaha mg10xu.. per your experience??
@GLBProductions2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the input signal, but in general: between off and 2 o'clock for vocals and other non-percussive instruments, from 12 o'clock to full for drums and other percussive instruments. Listen carefully as you adjust.
@chickentaquito78047 жыл бұрын
Could you explain why you set the device to a 2:1 ratio? And why 2:1 ratio compression is used for studios and 4:1 compression is used for live sound? Thank you!
@GLBProductions7 жыл бұрын
These ratios are just suggestions for a starting point - what is most important is how the source sounds after having been compressed. And I would say that 2:1 is a good starting point for vocals and 4:1 for drums and percussion.
