How to Use a Parker G2 Refill in the Zebra F-701

YES, you can use a Parker G2 style refill in the Zebra F-701 pen ( amzn.to/2Sl4v84 ). I used to not really like this modification because I couldn't get the button press to feel right, but I revisited it recently and was very happy with the results.
For the best results possible I'd recommend the Itoya AquaRoller Gel refill ( amzn.to/2Pb5XaN ), but any G2 style refill should work. I tried to prove this out in the video using Parker style refills from Rotring, Ballograf, Rotring, Kaweco, Schmidt, and others.
The Parker Gel refill had a slightly weird click but I think the metal at the end was a little distorted from when I removed the plastic end piece. This is one advantage of the Itoya AquaRoller -- its plastic body won't get bent like a metal one.

For anyone interested, I could NOT get the F-XMD (without mods) to work with a standard parker Quink Gel refill (metal body) however Schneider's Gelion 39 (plastic body) refill worked without mods (just remove the cap of the refill). The pressure required to activate the pen is slightly higher. Some people suggested filing down the cone section of the parker G2 in case someone wants to get hands-on. If you remove the plastic cone in the pen tip it can be used with normal activation force, but there will be slight play. I've left mine in. You might need to just cut off a tiny bit from the tip, though I have not tested this.

TLDR: (Long version below) Take the pen tip that screws into the pen body, (the threaded end), and run it in circles on some sandpaper, (I used 220 grit), on a flat surface a little at a time, testing the click every few passes until just enough is removed. Long Version: Ok, so I just figured something out. I wanted to find out what was making the click sticky with the Parker Gel. I’m using the Parker Gel as seen in this video. I think I narrowed it down the the area where the main body of the refill necks down to the tip. I believe it is getting stuck in the top of the pen tip piece where it threads into the pen body. I tried several things like pushing and twisting the pen tip thingy on the refill, sanding that area down, yada yada. Then it dawned on me to modify the PEN tip, instead of EVERY refill I want to use. So I used some 220 grit sandpaper on a hard smooth surface and ran the pen tip in circles, on the opening where the refill goes in, (right above the threads). NOT THE SMALL END WHERE YOU WRITE. I tested the click every few passes until just enough was removed so that it clicks freely. Now it works super smooth, with the original spring, and with every single Parker G2 style I have here. And of course all the other, thiner refills like the Fisher still work. I hope this helps someone out there. MOD ON PEN PEOPLE!

I finally figured out how to put a g402 refill in the f701. I removed the plastic liner of the tip of the pen, cut down the g402 refill to size, plugged the top with an f701 stopper from a plastic refill. Cut little bits at a time, I went through a few to get it perfect.

This is right up my alley. I love gel pens and I love tinkering. If I buy a bike or SAK, I just can't leave anything standard and stock. I've ordered an F-701 and a Kaweco gel refill. I have a drawer full of crappy old retractable biros, so I'm sure to find a spring. Can't wait to get busy and have a gel 701. Any friction from the refill against the barrel and I'm going to apply a film of silicon lube, haha. Might just do it, anyway, to see what it does to the action. Thanks.

I used a Schmidt Easyflow 9000 M. My refills came with a sticker, and they were a little tight at first. After removing the sticker, it's much better. It's a tiny bit "scratchy" when I click it, but works much better. It's almost imperceptible. BTW, my F-701 came with a weird very long and tiny/slim metal refill which reads: Zebra B20 China. I bought mine as a set with the Mechanical Pencil.

Did the Schmidt fit into the click mechanism? I have the F-xMD and the East Flow will not slide in because it is way too big around. I ended up removing the plastic Parker dealio, cutting the Schmidt metal barrel, (ensuing that the refill would be the correct length WITH the Parker piece), then slimmed down the plastic thingy to fit into the clicker and put it back in the refill. Works good, but way more work. I may pick up an F-701 to compare, (and because why not), But that’s what I ran into with the F-xMD.

I had to make two additional changes to use the recommended Itoya AquaRoller Gel refill in an older F-701 (the one with the black plastic click mechanism.) First, the Itoya refill body was just a little too wide and would stick in the click mechanism's internal insert sleeve. I used the file on my Leatherman to narrow the diameter of the bottom 1/2" of the Itoya by maybe 0.5 millimeters, and that was enough to let it move freely. Next, I noticed that it would also stick in the F-701's plastic cone (the piece inside the tip.) I removed that, cut off the bottom flange (the top hole did not need any adjustment with this refill,) and reinserted it. Perfect! I've had a love-hate relationship with the F-701; it's the perfect EDC pen, but the Zebra ballpoint is crap. The newly MacGuyver'd pen with the AquaRoller is awesome! Thanks for the inspirational video and recommendation!

I should read the comments more often since my F-Z01 broke because the refill getting stuck + the cone getting stuck resulted in the liner treads breaking, so now every time you click, the head goes flying.

A cheap solution is to stuff a bit of paper towel into the hole. I used to do something similar for my Pilot G2 refills in some of my Waterman pens that made the G2 stick out a little too much...I'd just remove the stopper at the end and put a bit of paper towel in the hole. Thanks for this video! I like the Zebra pen, but hate the refill. And I love my Parker refills (especially now that they make Uni Jetstream refills for Parker pens).

Thanks for the videos so much man. I love the F701 but I ordered the Grafton g2 style refills. (9$ for 3pack .5 black) I got the idea from your last video of gel refills for f701. Anyways I took the black twist cap off at the end of the refil, and stretched my spring out I think it’s the spring that came with the refil, it is longer than the silver one from the f701. I can click it if I barely push it in and out but if I do a full click it gets stuck pretty far out, I have to push it in on a surface to get it to retract, any advice? I really like the grafton refill. Maybe I could add the black cap back to the end and saw it down to about half the length so it is the same size as the f701 stock refill? The grafton seems to be just slightly shorter. Let me know why this may be doing this thank you so much!

I need to add that I used a small drill bit and shaved barely any off the inside of the f701 cap hole. It helped it fit but the plastic piece that was inside the f701 head is gone because I thought it was useless and threw it away, will that absolutely be needed for this to function properly?

Thanks for the video, I also use the F-701 as it is a great pen, but I do not like the Zebra refills I find they are unreliable. I have modified my F-701 to accept the Fischer space pen refill that always writes. It requires two changes the first is to lengthen the barrel by around 1.2 mm. The next is to enlarge the hole in the tip by around 0.1mm. Both are simple mods. get a stainless steel washer that is a neat fit over the thread at the tip and press fit it on to a mandril then grind it down on a bench grinder with the mandril in a cordless drill until it is the same diameter as the end of the pen barrel. Remove any burrs with 600 grit W&D abrasive paper and polish on 1200 and 2000 grit W&D abrasive paper. Enlarge the hole in the tip with a diamond burr in a Dremel rotary tool. I used the burrs that my wife buys for smoothing the hole in glass beads and its only took a couple of passes to obtain the perfect fit. This mod took me around 20 mins but is worth the effort. The real benefit is I can replace the refill with out the need to mess around with the refill in any way. This is my EDC pen because it always works. Why not gel refills or hybrids, I don't like gel refills. All the best.

I find the pressurized Schmidt Megaline P950 works quite well without modification (aside from removing the plastic end, of course). It almost writes like the Easyflow 9000 IMO. Quite good, indeed. I've heard many times that the Fisher cartridge doesn't write so nicely, so this would likely be quite an improvement over that (although I have not personally tried a Fisher one yet).

I couldn't get this to work with Schmidt Easy flow. There are some more recent videos using plastic G2 refills: example Itoya Aquaroller or Ohto Flash Dry (PG-105 NP) that do work. It involves pulling plug on refill and use a knife to reduce the diameter of the refill tube that goes inside the pen (about 0.5 cm long reduced diameter works). To modify the metal cone where the tip comes out, remove the plastic liner and using a dremel or file, cut the threaded portion down until the refill can be pressed out with a click..I usually cut into first two threads or so of threaded portion. Works well. I tried this on All metal f701 and FXMD.

@@AttorneyBerni is right. The problem is some of the metal refills which got a pretty great belly at the base of the refill, not letting enough way through the tip of the pen, for the clic to engage properly. Also, once you pull out the twisty g2 plastic piece, it will eventually engage, but the amount of nib out could be kinda meh. The fix I gone through was : 1/Find a way to close the top part of the refill. One of the way was to file down the g2 plastic piece flush to the metal. For some reason, by doing so, even if you are not actually tweaking the lenght of the refill, it tends to affect the amount of nib, putted out by the mecanism. Letting the top hole of the refill empty, even if it looks the same lenght, will lessen the amount of nib out of the tip of the pen, giving this "meh" appearance. 2/File down the threaded part of the conical tip of the pen, just until the clic engage. You need to be carfull because if you go to far, the tip wont hold the spring pressure anymore. Be aware that you are in a way weakening the tip/body assembly. and Voilà

I looked inside the pen with a flashlight and the are 4 little bumps that prevent anything wider in diameter than a fisher refill won't work. This might have been designed to reduce refill movement. Should I take the pen apart and remove the bumpers? I am ok with the Schmidt pressurised refills but I like to have more variety.

Hi, so you are satisfied with the Schmidt ones? Got this pen because I work in a warehouse and I need a sturdy pen with the potential to run pressurized ink. Original fisher refills are way to pricey here (14€ each),. Schmidt are only about 16€ for a pair or 29 for 4 refills, so they are way cheaper... Don't really need anything fancy (doesn't need to be the best black) as long as the ink is reliable (writes vertically, writes on wet paper, writes on wlc boxes, dries fast and won't smear).

I have the all metal f 701 and no matter how hard I try to twist to open the pen, it will not open! My husband also tried and can’t get it to open. Is this a common problem?!

Dont waste your money on a schmidt 9000 they don't work in the f701. I bought one and it just wouldn't click. Even with trimming the plastic insert then completely removing it. Still wouldn't work. I ended up ruining the refill from trying to make it fit. I tried narrowing the end of the refill, trimming it, adding a plastic piece to the clicker to make it come on contact nicd and flush with the refill but still wouldn't work. Pissed me off. Ordered a fisher pen refill that will hopefully give me no issues.

Couldn’t you just make a stopper with a drop of hot glue...? Squeeze some out on a bit of baking paper or the paper stick-on labels are on and dip the end in it, let cool and trim the edge?

Just bought an F701 at Walmart, and have a couple of Parker G2 refills from a Parker Jotter pen. This mod no longer works...

@@unsharpen You're welcome. Apparently, while all the F701s look the same externally, the internal construction varies. In the one I just bought, the click mechanism won't work with any refill other than the original ballpoint Zebra refills. And that's a shame, as the ballpoint refill writes poorly.

@@ExSkyCyclePilot Well that sucks. I bought one on Amazon and was going to return it.. they did a "returnless refund" saying I could keep the pen. After leaving a review, Zebra wanted to ship me a new one. I bought a pack of Kaco refills, it works in the F701 from Amazon, but not the one from Zebra.

I have been having issues with the Schmidt easyflow 9000 bold blue. I got the 12 pack on eBay. You don’t think they would go through the trouble of making fake ones do you ?

Sal It gets worse on certain paper. But my pilot g2 has no problem on any of the paper that the Schmidt is having issues with.

Parker Gel does NOT WORK. With the latest F701 and .7 Parker gel the metal tube on the refill is 0.6 mm larger than the plug on the the standard F701 cartridge. The Parker, with end cap plastic plug removed, will not fully insert into the extension mechanism. The refill does not slide inside an internal sleeve that is part of the Zebra mechanism. Replacement tube needs to be less than 5.3 mm in diameter.
