Zebra F-701 / Fisher Space Ink Hack

I did the mod, works well thanks. I'm not a fan of the look and feel of the space pen ink; however, it's amazingly reliable and the chassis is very durable.

I used the awl on my Victorinox Tinker to increase the bore in the pen's tip, then removed the rough edges with 2000 grit sandpaper and cleaned it up on some leather. Perfecto!! Fisher fine point clicks like I'd always wanted. Thanks so much man

Great tip, thanks alot! The cartridge was not wanting to click at all even with the plastic insert cut. I saw your comment and tried it, worked perfectly. Very quick, especially since I had my SAK huntsman on my desk already. I just hit the burr from the reaming with a file, perfectly fine. The tip on my pen just needed a fraction of a millimeter removed. You could probably accomplish this with the tip of a steak knife or something similar to anyone else that has this problem.

Works great. I just used an unfolded paper clip to push out the plastic tip insert.

for build quality to be better, and price to be half of the Parker.. this is the metal cap version so it is good. The parker classic silhouette wise probably still a more elegant pen, but these days so many variants with plastic insides, i'm not bothered to try out all.

Great tip! You could alternatively, run a drill bit, of the same diameter as the refill, through the hole and twist by hand. Thanks for the hack!

Yeah that's a good idea, but I notice if u use the same ink cartridge just get the fine tip no need to cut or drill anything, works smooth.

In case of the Zebra Fxmd, you can give the tip a kick from the front with the Fisher refill.

Who knew the Zebra had a bit of plastic at the nose? As much as we like the Zebra, and prefer the models with their Large refill, if you have to get one that has the skinny thin refill, this is the answer. Well DONE.

the schneider metal cartridges are very good quality as well, writes upside down. not sure about under water and extreme temperatures. But probably someone tested it.

I was about to dig out the plastic tip to cut it but put the pen together with the space pen cartridge……and it worked perfectly with no cutting or modding.

I cut just a hair line to much or enough off the plastic tip end, but sometime my pen has that wiggle room on the tip end of the pen cartridge & tick tick sound while writing with the Fisher refill. (I have a Parker Jotter that out of the package sounds the same while writing & same wiggle room) Sometime all I have to do is double/triple click the pen & the tick tick sound/wiggle goes away while writing. (Pen cartridge stays firm) It’s a fine point Fisher refill (0.9) & although it’s smooth writing the ink sometimes can skip some & it’s not very dark ink compared to my other fine point ballpoint pens. Not really liking the Fisher ink. I’m out $6 for the refill no biggie. Glad I didn’t just pick up a $20 plus Fisher bullet pen. I picked up another Zebra F701 & will keep it as is & use Zebra ink.

Good video man. One question: how does this F 701 compares -size wise- to the F 301? Are they the same length? Or is the F701 longer? On the thickness, I believe this F701 is thicker than the F301

Not a fan of major modifications, but if it means you can use metal cartridge instead of the plastic thin ink cart. than I agree.

Unless you have to write anywhere under any conditions the Fisher refill really sucks at everyday writing.

People commonly use the F-701 as and EDC pen when out and about. The Fisher refill is the perfect match since you can pretty much write on any surface with it. For office use I would never use a Fisher; i prefer the Schmidt Easyflow or pretty much any gel refill.

I dont know if the specs for this pen or the cartridge have recently changed but I can say with certainty this hack no longer works. After clipping the plastic piece I still had to file down the catridge with a nail file for several minutes to get it to not catch. Same model numbers and everything.

January 2024, and I just had the opposite situation: Simply transferring the spring was enough. Not even sure they're still including that plastic tip.

between the FXMD and F701 is there any difference?

Some F701 have a little black plastic bushing by the clicker, but Zebra makes an all stainless F701 that has the metal bushing like the FXMD. The only difference between the all stainless F701 and FXMD is the ink cartridge that comes with it. The FXMD and F701 with the black plastic bushing both come with a fat clear plastic ink cartridge. The all stainless F701 comes with that skinny all metal in cartridge that he pulls outta the pen in this video.

a 10 dollar cartridge for daily use, at least for somebody who USES or likes to use the pen at college (if they take notes anymoe i dunno) is DEFINITELY not worth it. That fischer is designed for special cases hence the price.

after the rattle was fixed the sound of the click sounded worse at least in horizontal position. That's why i don't like modifying. Also please do one click-wait- then click, not double click. I dunno every reviewer does these flash clicks one after the other , not satisfying at all.
