how to use a post hole auger to dig fence post holes

A 1 man gas power post hole digger is speed. A post hole auger or earth auger makes fence post holes fast - less than 90 seconds!. Compared to using a typical manual post hole digger, a gas power auger makes quick work of digging post holes.
We rented this gas power auger for $75 for 24 hours. This post hole digging machine is fairly heavy fully assembled, but can be disassembled to somewhat lighten the load.
The miscellaneous tools used for the project beyond the post hole auger were a 100 foot tape measure, 25 foot tape measure, and a 2-handle post hole digger.

Tip for using the gas post hole auger are:
- call the local "call before you dig" number! You don't want to hit any underground utilities! Stay SAFE!
- get help if possible - it is heavy to lug around all day!
- avoid digging in wet earth. The auger is to heavy to be pick up out of a muddy hole.
- lift the post hole auger straight up out of the ground, not at an angle.

6.5 hrs hard work, now that deserves a "like". Did all your mates do a runner? : ) I normally dig them out by hand but it takes a long time- it's time to rent one of these in my next project or buy one second hand.

@@Housebarons Only dug about 10 holes on one project and about 15 on another one. However, can only did the holes during winter, in summer the soil is like concrete, nearly impossible. Cheers from Australia.

so if the recommended diameter for a 4 x 4 hole is 12 inches and the rental augers claims to dig an 8 inch hole, do you use the clam shell and a shovel to increase the diameter? or a digging pole to shave down the sides ? t hanks. (good video! )

Hey Tamara, Where we live, we have a lot of clay. I made s judgement call that the clay would offer a lot more support than some other soils. While on some holes I did widen them a bit with the manual post hole digger, it was more to make sure all the posts were well aligned. While 3x the post width seems to be the typical “official guidance”, I’m one to consider the source in all information gathering. I think that is designed by the concrete industry. A 12 inch hole uses 2+x more concrete. Doing my research, seems like double the diameter was sufficient for our local. Thanks for watching!
