You can actually set the ratchet handle flush against the turnbuckle by doing a half-pull of the release lever. A pair of brackets will come down around the stopper to prevent any chance of it coming loose.

I noticed when you feed it through the slot, you didn't loop it around before the ratchet grabbed the strap.The ratchet did it for you. I guess either way works?
