What about tactical pen TSA 2019 rules? Or tactical pen TSA 2020 rules? It feels great to carry a tactical pen at the airport, on a plane, on a airplane. But it is not clear if a tactical pen is allowed on a plane. Indeed a tactical pen air travel feels safer. In this video, let’s clarify if a tactical pen is allowed on a plane. You may have a tactical pen from amazon, whether it is The Atomic Bear brand or tactical pen Gerber Impromptu, TSA approved EDC and TSA approved tactical pens may not exist… The issue might be the tactical pen glass breaker?? As an alternative carry a Zebra F-701. It's not a tactical pen per se, but it is all metal construction and would work fine in a self defense situation.

Ummm. NEVER say that your pen is for defence at an Airport or in the UK! In the UK you are sadly NOT allowed any defensive items! Even if you say your wooden pencil or a pencil is “for defensive reasons” the police will arrest you in the UK. Just say it is a pen and leave it at that. As for American TSA don’t be touchy with them. Be nice. IF they ask, just say it’s a pen. Leave it at that.

It’s actually a tough call. Sometimes it’s actually better to admit you know what it is and say you forgot about it. Three times I’ve traveled with people who accidentally carried nail clippers, scissors and silverware in their backpack. Each time they just honestly said they forgot and it was no big deal. On the other hand if you lie about it’s true purpose (as you suggest) there’s a chance TSA will escalate to a pat down by another highly scrutinizing set of agents and a chemical sniff of your hands. I’ve seen that happen too. Better to follow the rules and not lie about it by my first hand experience

Prior to these tactical pens I used to just carry the metal/aluminum pens. I was only denied entrance in a dance club/bar by the bouncers. I hid it in the bushes and got in.

TSA took my tactical pen. He did not like that it had a window breaker tip. Otherwise it would not have been a problem. It is crazy, I had travelled multiple times with it. This included a trip to Japan before it was an issue at a small airport in the southeastern US.

jay angus Yes Exactly! It is a hit and miss... most of the time you have no issue. We have never heard any incident that involved a tactical pen in the news. Where did you carry your pen and what type of pen was it??

I believe it was a knock-off UZI tac-pen2. I didn’t give the guy a hard time as he asked if the person who dropped me off was still at the airport. He said I could pass the pen off to them. They were gone already so I surrendered the pen. I had the pen in my backpack where all of my other pens were stored.

The Atomic Bear Yes, the TSA exists because of lax security controls prior to 9-11. Some say it is security theatre but I believe it is necessary to maintain secure air travel.

Hi I'm from America and I had a basic regular tactical pen it didn't look very tactical but on one little end it had a carbite glass breaker I took off the cap of the pen placed it over where the glass breaker would be I stuck it in the box with my carry-on and I took everything out of my pocket I had the pen looking just like a writing pen and the cap had covered the tiny tiny carbide glass breaker he had asked me is that a tactical pin and I said yes he went to his superior and his superior said nope can't take it on the plane why do they want us to be unable to defend ourselves with a less lethal option there's always in America a air marshal on board every flight and you won't know who they are they are trained and hand to hand and I'm sure they have a tactical pen it's kind of hard to hijack a plane with a metal pin I was very upset when he took it but I was honest I think we give TSA too much gray area is this bad is this not chemical in the airplane can it not instead of giving us a full statement Yes this can come no this can't so we don't get our stuff taken at their whim

You see the name tactical pen is the issue. What is tactical? Lol I would say: it is my everyday pen sir. Let the tsa agent make his/her mind about the rest. But more important put your pen inside something, not in plain sight. Like inside your jacket pocket or your bag. I carry the Stealth Pen Pro now. Always tell the truth and dont try to hide anything. But put the pen where a pen should be… Good luck!

Great video. I'm not a big fan of the flashy "tactical looking" pens, as I think they just draw unwarranted attention. I really like the Nitecore NTP21, the CRKT gen 2 pen and also your own Rebel pen.

Frankly pretty skeptical about the idea of tactical pens in general, but I like the Rebel as an EDC since it has the tungsten carbide glass breaker in case of an emergency, and for not looking "tacticool" like practically every other pen that incorporates a glass breaker. Also I do travel, and I'm not sure if I'd put it in a carry on or not. Might do since it looks pretty harmless. It'd be interesting if somebody shared x-rays of these things in a bag alongside some normal pens, just to see what they actually look like next to each other.

I offer one suggestion from Jason Hanson: Go to a store and get a cheap metal pen. If you use it in self-defense, you will damage it, but during the fight, it is effective.

I hate this advice. If you are getting a pen to save your life… who cares how much you paid. But once you start using a pen not designed to throw powerful blows and it slips off your hands… you will deeply regret not paying the few extra $. Don’t be cheap on your self-defense gear bro! Seriously! I spent a lot of time and money designing and thinking this through. I work with World combat experts. Not all pens are created equal! You should deffo look into the Stealth Pen Pro. Best grip retention on the market by far!

Most Items that cannot go through the checkpoint will almost certainly result in the agent informing you of your options; Those options include leaving the item in your car, mailing it to yourself, giving it to someone outside the checkpoint(i.e. a relative that dropped you off), and placing it through checked baggage or just abandoning the item altogether. If you are the play-it-safe type of person, put the item in question in your checked baggage.

I travel a lot. Best advice: Buy any good quality metal pen. I have had a parker old style metal pen for over 15 year, and always carry it in my backpack. Security never asked, and in case I need it as a tactical pen, it will deliver the damage I need. Just make sure you buy one that the top end is flat. That way you won´t hurt yourself if you need to use it. Another tip: using a pen is like using a knife. Unlike guns, It is not meant to be seen, but to be felt. The attacker should 1st notice it when you strike with it. If he sees it before you use it, you already lost 50% of its effectiveness. That is why mentally you should prime you brain to only go for this option when de escalation efforts failed and you have no other option and need to defend yourself.

I'd rather put mine into the luggage if anything. After all, this is an efficient glass breaker. And the security guys definitely don't want to see an efficient glass breaker on a plane. Although I seem to never get the logic of some airlines who prohibit any metal knives on the plane but serve you the same metal knives during the lunchtime.

Here's an interesting question- what about waterborne transport? What are the regulations and prohibitions like if you're traveling by water? I would love to travel internationally someday, but not only am I quite afraid of heights, the stories I hear of the ever-increasing draconian nature of the TSA renders that an unattractive option to me.

Water transport in the US it’s not under the guise of TSA. According to cruise ship officers it’s Homeland Security and the Coast Guard that enforce at sea

Although TSA is a Homeland Security agency, Its mission is strictly for air travel. The reason why many of the items that might seem benign have restrictions on your carry-on property is to reduce the likelihood of there being an in-flight emergency forcing the pilot to decend tens-of-thousands of feet to the closest airport, that could potentially be a thousand miles away.

It totally depends on the pen. I crossed TSA 100s of times with tactical pens. But I choose the ones I bring along: Rebel or Stealth.

Cross pens are the best option for airport security or roadside stops, they don't look a bit out of place if you're wearing a suit of full on military garb as they are just nice all steel and gold, silver, solid or plated or stainless steel, my preferred model that start at $20 or less in the jewelry section of any Walmart. This pen, just happened to be ideal for self defense and infact, at 13 years old, I fended off my first would be armed robber with a stainless steel Cross pen. He had a stupidly shitty .25 cal Phoenix .25 caliber pistol, when I shoved my Cross pen through his left nut, he dropped his weapon, cried like a bitch and was arrested. I'm 41 now, still carry cross pens and pencils which write exceptionally well, don't seem in the least out of place, even when using it to sign documents for law enforcement in California and I have knever been questioned as a weapon anywhere in the world I've traveled as most everyone's father or grandfather owned a cross pen and pencil set. Is D prefer a thicker tactical pen, but for those p iui purposes a Mont Blank is almost as effective and equally unquestionably effective and commonly accepted as just a nice pen.

I also avoid taking anything that would look or be called tactical. I did wonder about the laser on a Olight O'Pen 2 or Glow. Someone said they had no trouble with that, but was given grief about the bolt mechanism. It was passed though. Bolt action pens are more and more common and I often carry them as they do not have a clicker to press as I put it in my pocket. One never knows. My rather non threatening looking daughter had a supposedly air friendly Wenger clipper (no blade) and the Australian agent said the finger nail file was too pointy....after carrying it through many times with no problem. I always worried that they might complain about how sharp the little eyeglass screwdriver is, that is there instead of a blade. Did not complain about that. She managed to check it somehow...pays to be early. I mentioned one could always file it down on a handy sidewalk...better than losing the clipper. Unfortunately, Victorinox did not continue the supposedly air friendly version of the Clipper and only have a bladed version, so it makes it a bigger deal. :-(

It’s more than “just a pen”. By definition of the name itself, a TACTICAL pen is a weapon. Buy the inexpensive ones, if they take it not a big loss. Put one in your checked bag as a backup.

The TSA hasn’t “approved” any specific pens. The inspecting agent has broad authority to confiscate nearly ANY ITEM they feel is a security theft. If they can take your nail clippers they can certainly take your pen.
