Hello! I have a question. I did everything as you shown and everything is fine. Except one thing, when I add a custom out or color wheels nothing changes on the screen. Unless I remove adj layer and apply those settings to video files directly. What can it be?

Definitely worth a shot! One of its best uses is when you need to make a slight change in your grade across the board. Rather than making that same change on every clip, you only need to change it once! Maybe I’m just lazy though. Haha thank you for watching!

Could you achieve the same result just by turning your timeline into a Compound Clip? I guess this is easier because all of the elements are visible.

Yes! A compound clip would be another way to achieve this, however I prefer the adjustment layer method as it keeps everything visible as you stated, Making it much easier to move clips around on your timeline without them being stuck in a group together. Appreciate you watching!

Ok so I got two problems with the adjustment layers in FCPX. Let's say I have two completely different looking clips that need different gradings and a cross dissolve between them. I need to cut the adjustment layer over those clips since the grading is totally different on the two clips. But the cross dissolve does not work between the adjustment layers. Hope you understand what I mean. The second problem I have is that when I have done the edit, and graded it on adjustment layers, when I then spot a mistake I made in the edit, and I correct that. For example remove a couple of frames from one end of a clip, the adjustment layers I have on the top getts messed up and is a pain to clean up, especially if you have multiple layers of them. Whats your take on these problems?

Unfortunately adjustment layers aren’t completely perfect. These are both major problems I have run into myself! For the first problem, if the clips have to be connected, you can always try a compound clip (Alt + G), which comes with its own perks, but also it’s own problems. Also, just cutting the adjustment layer over those elements works, though not optimal. For the second question, I have never had the need for multiple adjustment layers, I usually just stick all the effects on a singular layer. Which might make that slightly easier. Additionally, color-grading is typically the last step performed on a video, partially for this very reason. - That being said, adjustment layers definitely don’t solve ALL problems, but they do offer a solution for added editing speed in FCPX when used where possible.
