You can buy organic alfalfa for $5 more a bag btw. I only use alfalfa pellets as my purchased slow release organic fertilizer now-a-days. You can buy a 50 pound bag of alfalfa pellets for $15-$20 at feed stores. You can also get organic bags for about $20. I go over the benefits, how to use it, and show you bed coverage examples. Side note... if I find other fertilizer on sale at 75% off I will buy them.

When I was a kid, there used to be a product called “Litter Green”. It was cat litter made from alfalfa. My grandmother bought several pounds for her guinea pigs. Once she had sold her guinea pigs, I took the left over Litter Green scattered it in my garden and had the best vegetables I had ever grown! I was amazed at how well it worked. I’ve been a fan every since, and that was 1974.

For years, I have used fuel pellets, which are made of sawdust. They work great. Highly absorbent. I have now switched to cedar shavings. Great for odor control. I use the same for dog runs as well. Clean-up is easy too.

Had a double benefit. Attracted the deer and rabbits, who pooped in the garden, attracted the grubs. Then, armadillos dug up and turned over the soil looking for the grubs.

I would caution not to use too much, especially during the growing season. I used this as a mulch many years ago and it got so hot during the breakdown that everything, included woody plants, were fried and had to be replaced. It also attracted rabbits to the garden. It is great applied sparsely or added to your compost. It definitely heats the compost. I ave also soaked it with water and used the tea as a liquid available fertilizer.

Gary, this was an awesome video with very practical guidance. I am definitely using this in my home garden, but also in the new community garden being planned in my township, which I am coordinating. We're building ten 12 ft x 4 ft by two ft tall raised beds, we plan to fill the bottom ft with woodchips, now will add a generous amount of pellets before starting to add topsoil. We have to bring in all the soil material because the raised beds are on a gravel base in a bocci ball court surrounded by old RR ties, so we can't allow the tie contamination to affect the gardening. Making your own compost is vastly over-hyped anyhow. There, I said it! Real studies have tracked it and done the math - in order to really make enough of your own compost for a good thick top-dressing every year, you need 2 to 5 times as much plant matter as you intend to grow. Most of us just do not have that much food scraps or the space to grow a couple beds of composting plants like comfrey or Sorghum sudangrass for every bed of food. You'll notice that some famous full-time growers who advocate using tons of compost are regularly buying it by the truckload or picking up food scraps from restaurants every week to make it. At a small scale that just doesn't really add up very well, at least not for us. Yes, we def compost all our food, yard and garden waste, but we treat it as just a bonus. Great for adding to a seed-starting mix once it's screened. But it's not nearly enough to rely on to sustain more than a bed or some containers at best. On a commercial scale or if you have a *bunch* of chickens/rabbits or something that add manure, then yeah it starts to make sense as a primary focus.

I like this idea. I already buy the organic pellets for my dairy goats. Fortunately, I can use their waste immediately on a garden bed. Last week I soaked some and gave it to the chickens. They went CRAZY for it but I have to compost their waste. Even my dogs like to have a pellet as a treat. Love your channel.

Wow! I have been looking for a good organic fertilizer but the big companies know how to get the $ from you. This sounds amazing and buy the comments many use it!. I have been using the "Back to Eden" method of gardening and now after 4 years and the soil eating 20 inches of wood chips the garden is getting better and better. I can use this in conjunction with the wood chips and get the fertility I need for the high need plants at a fraction of the cost. Thanks again, I'll be checking out more of your vids. After all it is Jan.1 and now starts the season even though I would plant till May!

About a month ago I sprinkled *80 pounds* of alfalfa pellets on my one hundred (100) square foot no-till raised bed where I grow my corn, lol. Then I covered it with fall leaves. By the time I plant my corn seedlings in May the alfalfa pellets should be mostly broken down. Alfalfa also contains a growth hormone called triacontanol. It's great stuff.

@@sircorkysriley4904 Funny you should ask. Last year (2020) I tried no-till for the first time for my corn patch and had the healthiest corn I've ever grown. I didn't till the soil. I simply laid down one inch of compost on top of the soil, and transplanted the corn plants into the untilled soil. BUT I spread 1 cup of organic fertilizer in a 28-inch line on top of the soil where the corn row will be, and worked it into the top 2 inches or so of the soil with my gloved fingers. I transplant my corn seedlings 7 inches apart, so that works out to 1/4 cup organic fertilizer per plant. I use "Kellogg 'Organic Plus' Tomato, Vegetable & Herb Fertilizer" from Home Depot. *BUT* this year I'm going to experiment. This year half my rows of corn will include the Kellogg fertilizer and half will not. I want to see if the alfalfa/leaf combination alone will be enough to keep the corn plants healthy for the entire season.

I just come across your video about using alfalfa pellets for the garden I am very impressed. I think I'm going to put it in a blender and then spread it in my planting holes for tomatoes and peppers and such that way they will get the nutrients right away I'm thinking. I used to use alfalfa hay as a garden mulch for years, in the fall, i would till it down with my Troybuilt tiller, i would also add some chicken manure from my organiclly fed chickens as well. I had heavy clay soils, and, after a few years of this, i had wonderful garden soil.

For years, I have used fuel pellets, which are made of sawdust. They work great. Highly absorbent. I have now switched to cedar shavings. Great for odor control. I use the same for dog runs as well. Clean-up is easy too.

I added alfalfa pellets to all my beds and containers a few weeks ago. Looking forward to reaping the benefits in Spring. I also got beet pulp from the feed store (just for some variety!) and have been in using that too. No problems with pests/rodents.
