Now if your plugging in a hard drive and nothings popping up you have to make sure it’s compatible , my wd passport had to be formatted to exFAT , you right click on it on a computer then click format , if it’s on NTFS apple will not be able to read it so change it to exFATT and click format , it takes seconds !

It also helps if the external hard drive is formatted in "exFAT". If the external hard drive is set to NTFS, or some other format, the iPhone will recognize it, but it will only be in "Read-Only" mode. You can access files, but you can't transfer or copy from the iPhone.

It will work with Apple APFS file system, but you will need a Macintosh based computer to format your Hard Disk Drive using this File System.

Don't be that ignorant !! The fact that the HDD or SSD is not powered by the lighting, have nothing to do with the cable or the device...the issue is the power that the HDD needs to work and the battery size of the device that you're using. For instance, if you plug the SSD in an ipad the SSD will work without any power supply.

After endlessly googling on why I could'nt save anything onto the hard drive. Make sure the hard drive is formatted to "exFAT" you can go onto "File Explorer" on your desktop, right click the hard drive and click Format. If its set to NTFS, turns out it will be in "read only" mode. Hence why I couldnt save anything. Everything is working now thank god thank you so much for this video

This is an example of reasoning out how to marry old tech with new using the maths of physics. Apple persistently makes customers jump through hoops when it comes to transferring photos and freeing up internal capacity and it is annoyingly bossy. Signing on to iTunes is really lame, using Bluetooth is unreliable and the half-baked HEIC format is really not good enough. IP transfer works quite well but is too cumbersome for most casual users of mobile phones and really not very secure where an IP is shared by many. An important aspect of saving photos to a physical device is so that they may be reviewed and edited later as the rightful property of the user. It is not as if attempts are being made to steal Mac apps and most of these are old hat anyway. Commercial USB external hard drives of the old spinning type are often grossly overpriced and cannot be mended and while some (such as Hitachi) have proven records some others are of reject quality from the server industry. Manufacturers of the cases are only sometimes honest about what actual drive is sealed inside. Making ones own from a known good 'spinner' ex a laptop can be far more more effective in the long run and of course remember to format as EX-FAT for use between Mac and Windows then send to your favourite respective photo editor and make best use of the quality images iphones undoubtedly produce. If taking the DIY route you will notice that a SATA drive has two sections of pins. The smaller section is for handling power and whereas an SSD uses little power a 'spinner' needs up to 12 volts which the phone or an un-powered hub cannot give. Therefore a powered hub such as shown here is essential for the right amount and consistency of power without stressing components. When you have checked that photos are indeed on your external hard drive it is safe to keep what you want on your iphone and erase the rest OR mass erase then transfer back special ones to the phone for such as wallpapers. In this way the phone lasts longer, an older 'spinner drive' does not take up land fill and you have plenty of time to view and edit photos. The powered hub shown here is deceptively well made and well grounded even to UK standards and the lights denote which USB sockets are live. Clever and robust design Finally re the expensive Apple dongle, others will work well enough and some are downright rubbish. While we all know that Apple Co inflates prices the bottom line is how important your photos and equipment are to you. Apple has a fair warranty system on most accessories and build quality is generally consistent.

It is so irritating that every time I transfer my photos and videos to a storage device that is not a mac or iphone etc it will not show the date you took the photo/video just the date you transferred it. If your USB device is overheating, Samsung OTG connection can fix it, and won’t overheat anymore. Just connect to the OTG cable, then wait till the phone recognize it or not. Then, power the phone to standby. May need 5-10 retries, depending on your USB device. Overheating consumes more batt power, and the device may malfunction.

It is worth not that video files copied that way lose at least half of original bitrate...I used it once. I also used the iXpand Sandisk Pen with same results. I stil prefer by far connecting the iPhone directly to the laptop. That way you preserve the original quality of video material. Not the same to transfer to a more portable device but I prefer keeping quality.😜

Hello question: I got the same Atolla USB hub as you, but instead, I tried connecting a lightning-to-USB cable(Amazon Basics) directly from my iPhone to one of the ports on that hub and it’s not working? Is the trick using that official Apple Lightning/USB adapter? (BTW I also have mine plugged into the wall and have a working exFAT thumb drive but it’s not recognizing it.) I have iPhone 7. It doesn't seem as sophisticated as your newer model so I don't know if I can do it. I have it all plugged in. The Passport is glowing with a solid white indicator, just don't see anything on the iPhone 7 that's different. I don't even know if I have files.

I just use IMAGE CAPTURE, which is on every MAC computer...standard. I plug an external drive into the computer, plug my phone into the computer, and then I just use IMAGE CAPTURE on the computer to send the stuff from my phone to the external drive.

My friend, click on the photos and or videos you want to save to the external hard drive , click the share button and simply click on save to files , and then choose the destination to where you want them to be saved . So in other words , connect the external hard drive , locate and open it in the my files app, then you can create folders in it , so when you choose the photos you want to save just click the share button , choose save to files , then find the folder you want it to saved in and click on it . Hope that helps you out my friend !
