How to Use an RC Program Card

The Surpass / GoolRC program or tuning cards don't come with instructions, so here's the quick video tutorial which also describes the meaning of each setting.

@ 0:45 All the other voltages down to 0v are for other types of batteries such as Li-Ion, Ni-Cd, Ni-Mh, etc. usually anything other than Li-Po's. The 0V is usually reserved for alkaline's only. as everyone knows you can completely drain and use every drop of voltage from an alkaline.

Someone else asked me about the Hoovo battery in another video and when I checked on it, the Hoovo 3S 1500mah battery was no longer available but Zeee makes one with similar specs. I do like the Hoovo one though. Seems to balance out well, holds its charge. No complaints. Glad I got it. The size happens to fit perfectly on a WLToys 144001 also. I also use it to power a pair of FPV goggles. It's worth looking into the size to see how it will/can adapt to other uses you may have for a 3S to size something accordingly.

Hmm, unfortunately not. This is the first I’ve heard of a light that stays on. I’ve heard of the light blinking which means not compatible, but that doesn’t seem to be your situation.

You need the pink program card, a lot of these white cards sometimes only work for racerstar esc's the blue esc you have is surpass and the pink card pink card works for them. They all copy the same card but slightly cloned different boards inside.

I get that question a lot and I really don't know. Are you using this on a Surpass ESC? or GoolRC ESC? It has to be the same manufacturer. Each manufacturer has their own card.

It only works with the Surpass brand and any generics that steal their product design. I've heard of people trying to use it on other brands and it seems to flash a blue light and doesn't execute the programming.

Possibly, but helicopter ESC's I would assume have different functionalities so it might get a bit tricky. The program card only works with the Surpass ESC's and similar.

Unfortunately, I haven't come across that and don't have anything to recommend. I'm a bit at a loss too on what to do. Perhaps it's not compatible with your system? I assume your setup is around bound to your radio and it was working fine before you attempted to use the card. If not, you'll want to bind it first.

The ESC only has one wire coming out of it with a black connector (the others are a on a on/off switch wire and motor wire). That black connector plugs straight into the matching black connector on the program card. There’s really no way to do it wrong because it will only plug in one way.

Nope, the operation is the same. I would assume that with a 150amp ESC, you’re running 3S or higher and probably have tons more torque than the original chassis was designed for. As such, I’d recommend that you don’t set your reverse to be too aggressive or you risk higher probability of stripping out gears. I too have run a 60amp ESC and in my case a 120amp ESC using this programming card. Soon after making the video here, I upgraded to a 120amp ESC and the process was exactly the same.

It doesn't mention it specifically, so I don't think so. It does have anti-lock braking system which can be adjusted if you have function on the transmitter. Not the same thing, but does effectively slow the car with more control.

@@r.cbikefloyd5390 It doesn't have to come with it. You can buy it separately. Yeah, program cards only work with the same brand that it's designed for. Spektrum has their own that will only work with spektrum ESC's. Surpass has one that works with Surpass. The reason it "may" work with Gool RC or Rocket is b/c they technically may all be the same company in China making stuff under different names. You want to match the brand of ESC with the brand of the program card though. And it will only work for brushless ESC's. Brushed ESC's don't have the capacity to do anything as far as I know.

Sorry, I cannot be of more help. I'm really not certain. I do know that the program card is not compatible with all cars though. It won't work on sensored motors for instance. Maybe this goes without saying, but make sure the battery is plugged in when you're using the program card.

Not certain your question, but it sounds like you're asking about what 3.1, 2.9 and 2.7 is? That's the voltage of the battery per cell that when reached, the car will shut off. You do not want it it to be at the highest level possible. Once a battery goes below 3.0v per cell, it is permanently damaged. There's absolutely no reason to have it any anything less.

@@gennarobottino6303 It's supposed to. I know my rig pretty well so I just stop running it when I think it's time. Generally, there's a bit of voltage sag and I can feel it get a little weak. That's when I stop. Getting down to 3.1v really isn't good. You don't want to go below 3.3v. Ideally 3.5v per cell.

The program card I suspect will only work on sensorless systems. If you have a sensored motor and ESC, you'll need a different program card as this particular program card is not compatible.

Coming from the drone world, are these escs programmable without a card? With the ones image to i am able to calibrate, initiate, change and set through tx input: Calibrate by fully compressing throttle at power up waiting for esc beeps, and then releasing throttle to zero. Done Or continuing to other options by broadly going to zero and up throttle at the desired field and option. (I have my 1st brushless car conversion parts on order for my 144001 that is also on order) 😁

Although the principles of amp draw are identical between the ESC's in an RC car and in an FPV quad, the FPV ESC's are programmable via a card. From what I know, you can use BLHeli to upgrade firmware, calibrate etc. There isn't a program card you can hook up to a quad ESC. There's also no input connector since quad ESC's are basically chips rather than a big chunk of thing with a servo connector you can use. Hopefully you didn't buy a brushless kit. If you did, just don't run it hard b/c most budget kits come with motors that draw more amps than the ESC they include can handle (I have a video with more details if you are interested in that).

Your wires are crossed. If it's brushed, swap the wires going from the motor to the ESC. If it's brushless, swap the outer most two. The middle wire should be fine.

That combo sounds doable assuming the battery has enough of an amp rating. What do you mean by jitter? Is it making noise as it's moving or noise and no movement at all?

@@christiansrcs7789 sure thing. What you were referring to is actually called throttle expo. It will be enabled using a transmitter that has that feature. That’s also means changing out the receiver so that it can be compatible though. So it would be a bit more involved, and cost more.

@@sedricsegundo7186 i came be specific about your particular ride but the larger the pinion and smaller the spur, the more top end speed but less torque and less acceleration. The smaller the pinion and bigger the spur, the more torque and lower the top end. But higher acceleration. Careful that the gears you get have the correct hole size to match the shaft of the motor. I'm looking at this again more closely and on the third line of the program card, it specifically says 25A -120A so yes, I believe this would work on a 60amp ESC.

No, this does not effect that. If your throttle is backwards you probably have one of the wires crossed between the motor and ESC. If your steering is reversed you will need to change some settings on your transmitter. The program card only changes the aggressiveness of certain features. Not forwards and backwards on any function.

I’m told it’s for different battery chemistries from LiPo that have different tolerances and range for what’s considered “too low”. But your thinking is right. It would make more sense for LiPo users that the program card has higher limits closer to storage charge voltage.

Swap out the motor wires. You have them connected wrong between the motor and the ESC. If it’s brushless, keep the middle wire but swap the other two. If it’s brushed, just swap the two wires. You may or may not need to then change the setting on your radio.

@@gunbuster333SMSTI I don’t think this brand of esc is used in boats. If you are building one and put a compatible esc, then yes, it can be programmed. It’s just that I don’t think there are currently any off the shelf boats that use this brand esc.

Think,........ the voltage does need more parameters but it is set for lower and even 0volts for us that still run NiMh and NiCad. Yes, I still run those in my abused, Fast Electric RC boats. I say abused because at the amperage draw that I sometimes experience, the soldier joint give, and the battery falls apart. lol
