As someone who is just getting into automatic watches, the advice about setting the time to 6 before adjusting the date is invaluable.

To correct one thing he said in case you own more affordable autos like Seiko 5 or Orient 3stars, if the date is half changed it does not mean a tooth broke. It just means it can take about 4 hours to fully change the date, usually from 10 PM to 2 AM

I have had my automatic since 2002. I thought I broke the winding mechanism by shaking it too much around 2006. It became a dust collector in my dead battery watch pile. I ordered a watch repair kit to change batteries for 15 dollars. I though I might take the back off and peek in, give a little lube and see what happens. KZbin has enabled me to attempt any repair myself. After watching the video for the first 2 1/2 minutes, I almost ran to my watch collection and started to wind it. It was working in 5 seconds. Believe it or not, when I went to set the date, IT WAS ALREADY SET ON THE 27TH!!! I think I will remember that moment for quite some time. Thank you,

I've had my late 1960s Omega Seamaster for about 6 years. I wear it fairly frequently; it's my only watch. It was fixed before it was given to me and I was told it would need oiling once a year. I've only had it serviced once since then; it's certainly due for an oiling again if that initial advice is indeed true. When I had it serviced the man seemed surprised I was bringing it in as it was still working, even though he had been the one suggesting it be oiled once a year. I was then told about the only thing he could do was clean up the gummed up oil and re-oil it. I said OK and went through with the service which ended up costing about $50 or $60. A few months later I found that it wasn't keeping time very well though I was promised a 6 month warranty. I brought it back and it was fixed for free; I was told when I picked it up that a spring was out of whack or something. Here we are another year or two later and I'm finding it keeps inconsistent time; sometimes it will go fast and other times it seems to keep exactly the right time. Anyhow I'd rather not have to pay that much to have it serviced again so am wondering if there's anything I can do myself? I'm more concerned of whether it needs oiling than the time inconsistencies.

You can just oil it up once a year or whenever. It has to be striped down, cleaned from the old oil and the lubriacated and put together. Putting new oil on top of old oil serves no purpose. That is something a jewller would usually do not a watch repairer.
@VinylToVideo2 жыл бұрын

I've gone thirty years without taking my Seiko 5 for repairs of any kind, oiling or otherwise. I only took it in now because the winding is no longer lasting the night unless I shake it for a few minutes before I go to sleep. The watchmaker says he only replaced the main spring, cleaned and oiled the gears but the day/date not only looks different to me but is now English/Spanish instead of the English/French it should be so now I'm trying to get the English/French back through this watchmaker but I may have to pay another watchmaker if this one won't do it or swap the disc myself. There is really only one Seiko Canada approved watchmaker for repairs in Canada and Seiko Canada will only sell parts to their approved watchmakers hence all the others buy their parts from the US and China hence the English/Spanish day/date discs. Given that it's difficult to find a watchmaker you can trust, try not to have it maintained unless absolutely necessary and take photos of your watch front and back and of all the secondary language days of the week before taking the watch in for repairs. For all you know, the watchmaker could just swap out the calibre with a Chinese generic for $30 while charging you $150 to $250 for the service. Note that second hand Seiko 5's are as cheap as $20 so buying them for parts and practice at repairs works well, mind you they will likely have the wrong secondary language. Buying second hand Seiko 5's from a Canadian dealer that will show that it is a French secondary language in his photos typically costs $140. Many watch makers will just have a glass shop cut plate glass to size when replacing the crystal so you have to find one that will actually order in a new crystal but that's because they are used to not being able to find new old stock to buy. Plenty of Seiko 5's were made so you can buy a new old stock Hardlex crystal for about $20. If you want a sapphire crystal, you'll have to find a watchmaker willing to experiment with fitting Chinese generic crystal's and it'll be trial and error, again it's finding a watchmaker you can trust that is the problem. Still, finding a watchmaker you can trust is best done with your Seiko 5 than a more expensive watch that you will eventually be tempted by. Note, it will likely cost more to take a Seiko 5 in for repairs, even just cleaning and oiling then it would be to just buy a new one so repairing one is just for sentimental reasons and it may be best to buy a bag of second hand Seiko 5's from India and start taking them apart yourself. If the watch is running fast, have it demagnetized and then it'll run about 4 seconds slow per day and then slowly builup magnetism from your environment to run fast again at which point you demagnetize it again. A demagnetizer costs only $14, a good watchmaker or jeweler will demagnetize it for fre, old CRT TV's and computer monitors degauss on power up so we used to just use our TV's to demagnetize watches. Taking your watch in to adjust the time on warranty probably wasn't necessary and probably made it less accurate.

but won't moving it to 6 if it's already engaged on a gear will mess it up? Is it better to let it run until it goes past that time? My thoguht process is you don't want to use your hand to change it betweent hat time period as that might put more strain on the gears engaged on the calendar wheel, so best to let it run past that time frame. Correct me if I am wrong since I am a beginner, I tried doing this on my automatic watch and it felt a little tougher than usual to turn it to the 6 am when it stopped at 2am. ALso the date changed as I turned it to 6 am
