In this video I show you how to use the battery preconditioning system in your 2022 or newer Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6 to preheat the battery before DC fast charging. These methods works for 2022MY cars updated by the dealer or 2022/2023 models which came from the factory with this installed. You must use POI categories to access and find charging destinations for the system to activate. Let us know how this system has been working in your Ioniq 5 if you have experience or any other tips and tricks!
Check out ‪@TheIoniqGuy‬ for a more detailed video covering preconditioning in the IONIQ 5!

I have a Model 3 and the Ioniq 5 and Tesla definitely made it easier! You almost need a PHD to work Hyundai's features, smh! Still love my Ioniq 5 though.

Level 1 and Level 2 charging will not benefit from preconditioning because the speeds are so slow. The battery can accept the speeds at any (most?) temperatures.

I have a question. How can the car adjust the temperature before charging? It can only be done with the map that comes with the car or google maps or the wave app. It can be done as well. Thank you.

It can only be done with the built in navigation at this time.

@@ScubaSteveCanada I would still make an official complaint about slow charging. Multiple of us have struggled to get the update because Hyundai Canada (unless they’ve changed their tune) is not automatically giving the update - only if there is an individual complaint. Ensure you get both the VCU update which is an automatic update AND the BMS update which requires the complaint. Also if you haven’t updated the navigation you will have to do that yourself. It has to be updated to at least the May 2022 version. Most recent is October. Hope it works out for you. It’s a relief to finally have it but it was an unnecessary journey Hyundai Canada sent me on. Hope your experience is more straightforward.

Is it possible for you to show 2 actual recording sessions in cold weather, one with it off and another after the battery has pre-conditioned. People react better when they can see it happening.

@Paul-cj1wb

@@CarsMadeSimple Yes, That's correct. If you ever have time to record them, it would really show the viewers the actual difference so the anti-EV crowd can see that with battery preconditioning the charging speeds are way higher. They always try to bash EVs by saying the charging speeds in cold weather make EVs unusable. The more proof that battery preconditioning solves that the better. Especially if everyone out there can see the huge difference between battery preconditioning and without.

Frankly, 20% could mean as much as 50 miles of range (tested, not EPA/WLTP) on highway, and considering on road trips (when you're more likely to use this) you get only about 190 miles charging at around 80%, then that gives you about 140 miles??? is that what this mean? (I suppoose you do get extra miles, but how much do you loose? I"m used to coming into chargers with very low state of rage, down to 1% at times). Second, Why can't hyunda/Kia do a proper route planer like many other cars have, and have the pre-conditioning as a "yes/no" option? many cars can do that. As far as range, this car isn' terrible, and charges fairly fast compare to others to 95% (even to 100%) unlike cars like Mach-E that can take two and a half hours from 0 to 100 percent... Think Kia will do it (in optimal conditions) under 50 minutes, and I've seen it even faster, however, under cold condition (when you need this for sure) times over an hour wouldn't be uncommon, so this feature IS needed, just wish it wasn't just implemented as it was. with so many restrictions.

How do I set a charging station that is 100 miles away? Why would I want to charge 15 miles from home when I leave with 90%?
@CarsMadeSimple
@CarsMadeSimple Жыл бұрын
Exactly. The system limits how you can search for stations using the preconditioning mode. If you need to find a stop that is between your current location and destination (and doesn't show up with either filter selection on the menu) I have seen you should be able to use the map to scroll to that exact spot, zoom in very close, and click on the charging station and add it as a stop that way. Kyle from Out Of Spec showed this method in his recent video.

Can't the battery pre-condition when you plug into a charger? It might take a slightly longer, but it would make sense that it would optimize the battery while at the charger also.
@CarsMadeSimple
@CarsMadeSimple 9 ай бұрын
This takes time and time saving is the point of "pre-conditioning". If you wait until charging to optimize the battery temperature then you will spend much longer charging. It's better to waste a couple percent of battery then to wait another 5,10, 15+ minutes charging at low speeds depending on how cold the battery is.
@ShadLife
@ShadLife 9 ай бұрын
@@CarsMadeSimple Yes, I said it might take slightly longer, but my assumption is that it still tries to warm the battery. My car will only pre-condition above 20% charge. So if I am below that % my hope would be that the battery is still optimized while charging rather than just charging a cold battery the entire time.
@CarsMadeSimple

@CarsMadeSimple

That depends on the ambient temps and the starting temperature of the battery pack. I can't provide an exact number but it could take just 5-10 minutes or it could be slow the entire charge time.

@zeydallahoum
@zeydallahoum Жыл бұрын
Use the in-car nav on roadtrip. It will know the best temperature to be in to optimize the charging stops.
@CarsMadeSimple
@CarsMadeSimple Жыл бұрын
That is a fair question. I would say it is not always close to ambient depending on a few variables. I do not believe all vehicles tell you the battery temperature in detail but I know several do. Worst case is that you add the POI in the car, and it does not need to precondition because the battery is already at temps high enough.
@Lascarnn
@Lascarnn Жыл бұрын
It is hard to tell, but I heard using recuperation increases warms up the battery. So for example, if you're driving in the city, and it's 10 deg C, perhaps no preconditioning will be needed to get max speed)
@CarsMadeSimple
@CarsMadeSimple Жыл бұрын
@@Lascarnn Yes, regen along with aggressive driving can help to warm the battery as a large amount of energy is flowing in and out from the pack. Depending on the conditions, this may be enough to overcome the ambient temps however in most cases preconditioning will be more effective.
