How To Use Blade Baits To Jig For Walleye (Walleye Fishing Tips & TRICKS!)

Blade baits account for MANY trophy sized fish of many species annually. These lures were 1st made by Heddon,Lures - production started in late 1958. While slow to start in popularity, those of us chasing spring walleye in the 1970's and later, always and I mean ALWAYS carried dozens of them on our excursions. They WORK - deep, shallow, and in-between. For walleye, when the water reaches 40 to 43 degrees, try them and HANG ON! A couple things to help newbies with this lure, is ALWAYS use a quality ROUND BEND locking snap. Do NOT destroy the action with giant snap swivels!! Also, remember as expressed in this video - KEEP control of the lure at ALL times. While color can be a personal choice thing - it's NOT when chasing walleye! Use BLACK in dirty water OR at night. Walleye can and WILL see the bait better. Save the bright chartreuse UV Moon Belly Jelly whatever colors for bright days! One more thing - many a Coho has fallen prey to this bait! Do NOT underestimate it's ability to attract and entice! If given a choice - I'd have 3 of these in black, 2 in Chrome, and one in a UV enhanced color - likely chartreuse or purple chartreuse tiger. Rods 6'6" to 7' are perfect if they are in a Medium with Fast Action. Lines like Berkeley XT in 10-12# works great - check your line OFTEN as nicks WILL occur with this bait, and rocks just never cooperate with giving up stuck baits...BUT ....using slightly softer trebles will help you slowly pull at least a good amount of snagged lures out. Straighten and sharpen the hooks and you're back in the game!

What leader to you recommend when attaching the duo lock? I get tangles way too much with my Vibes. I use braid most of the time, but I think I need a fluoro leader. Your thoughts?

You didn't mention what depth to jig at. Is it just off the bottom, or are you going for fish you see on sonar at a specific depth?

Look for transition points of sand to gravel. Day time 12-25 foot and at night - shallow - I've nailed huge eyes in 2-5 foot in gravel bars. Try a 1/8 to 1/4 oz black jig and twister tail at night.
